Middies is ready for Craven Week
Hoërskool Middelburg was informed last August that it would be hosting the sporting event, and the school has since been hard at work to prepare its premises for the occasion.
Dave Osborn (vice principal) and Tommie Strydom (chairperson for the school governing body) spoke to the Middelburg Observer about the preparations that have been put in place.
The school has acquired the help of additional workers to maintain the rugby fields. The A-field is covered every evening to protect the pitch from frost.
Additionally, the school's dressing rooms, ablution facilities, hostels, gymnasium, and the pavilion have undergone upgrades.
A new cafeteria has also been built to accommodate the scores of participants and supporters, and a new scoreboard has been erected for the B-field.
There are about 1 060 rugby players and coaches expected on the occasion, and the 36 teams will be playing 56 matches.
Accommodation for the teams is being provided through means of the hostels at Hoërskool Middelburg, Hoër Tegniese Skool Middelburg, Middelburg Primary School and Hoër Tegniese Skool Witbank.
Additional security will also be available to ensure safe passing and transit to the school premises.
The open field behind Steve Tshwete Local Municipality, known as the Prayer Oven grounds, is the main designated parking area.
'It's a big honour and achievement to be selected to host Craven Week. It places Hoërskool Middelburg on the map as an institution that holds itself to a high standard in sport and organisation,' Osborn said.
He added that the upgrades done for the Craven and Academy Week are considered long-term investments into both the school's sports facilities and its general development.
'The school's learners will benefit from the valuable exposure to top-level rugby, which serves as motivation for younger players to work harder and strive towards becoming part of future teams.'
Important information about the Craven Week and Academy Week:
• The matches will be broadcast on SuperSport Schools and SuperSport 1.
• Entertainment will be provided each night in the beer tent.
• The SA Schools teams will be hosted by Middies the week after Craven Week. A match between the A and B teams will take place on July 17, on the MHS A-field.

Road cycling is dead, long live road cycling
On Saturday, road cyclists showed with their wheels that road cycling is still kicking during the Rooiwal Women's Day cycle race near Pretoria. Organiser Lenie Smit of Lenick Promotions clucked like a hen with a dozen chicks on the successful day. She was full of praise for the metro police who turned up in large numbers. Hundreds of cyclists participated in the 95km, 52km and 26km races, which were presented on a safe circular route. The Reformed Church Grootvlei at Rooiwal has benefitted from the cycle races over the years and has erected numerous structures with cycling money. The church provided delicious 'church food', typically offered at a bazaar. Lenick also put a lot of effort into the prize-giving. Middelburgers Angelique and Jurgens Steyn took on the 95km and completed the race in 3:29:26 and 3:37:37. Former editor of the Middelburg Observer, Tobie van den Bergh, placed first in 65-69 category with a time of 1:31 in the 52km.

3 000 athletes flock to GTR 2025
The Greatest Train Race 2025 is back and bigger than ever with 3 000 athletes participating since the popular race was suspended by Covid-19. Runners took off this morning at 07:00 to complete the three distances including at 21.7km, 10km and 4.9km race from the old Belfast road to the Middelburg Train Station. The Greatest Train Race started in 1987, originally in eMalahleni, until it was decided to run between Middelburg and eMalahleni. Covid-19 saw to the GTR's temporary suspension until its relaunch last year. According to host and organiser, Johan Janse van Rensburg, the GTR has steadily regained popularity, with 1 600 athletes participating last year to a phenomenal 3 000 athletes for 2025. Phillip does his magic with Zedan Johnson
Phillip does his magic with Zedan Johnson A local businessman created some magic recently. Phillip Basson is a renowned business owner who did magic by giving tickets to a nine-year-old boy, Zedan Alias Johnson, to watch the Springboks vs Georgia at the Mbombela Stadium on July 19. He hoped to meet his favourite rugby hero, Cheslin Kolbe, but was happy to meet the Springboks. Zedan's father, Daniel Johnson, and Phillip have been friends for many years and played several games together for the Pumas in their younger days. Philip was playing hooker, and Daniel flanker. Zedan, with his lightning speed, side steps, and magical goose steps like Cheslin Kolbe, stole the show at the 2025 Craven Week in Middelburg. He and his father visited Phillip at his house in eMalahleni to collect his tickets and to say thank you for the generous, magical gift. His last words to Phillip were, 'I know this school field over the road, I scored a lot of tries there – let's go and play.'
