Excessive chemical use degrades soil; action plan to revive it, says CM Siddaramaiah
BENGALURU: Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said excessive use of chemicals by farmers is a cause of concern as over 43% of land lost soil organic carbon leading to rapid desertification.
The CM said to deal with this, it has been suggested to prepare an action plan to revive the soil. It has been suggested to educate farmers in this regard, he said.
The CM said compared to previous years, farmer suicides have decreased and the aim is to focus on ensuring that there is no suicide. For this, teams have already been formed at the village level and these teams should be activated further. It has been suggested to take strict action at the district level to control private moneylenders and microfinance, he said.
The CM said he has directed the senior officers to give notice to DDPI and BEOs in the places with below 60% pass rate in SSLC and second PU examinations.
The number of children joining government schools is decreasing by around one and a half lakh to two lakh every year, the CM said added that to prevent this, regular meetings should be held with parents and BEOs should visit schools regularly. The DCs have been instructed to inform the concerned officials about this and take action.

Bengaluru (Karnataka) [India], June 2 (ANI): After the Maharashtra government raised objections to increasing the height of the Alamatti dam, Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar on Monday appealed to Union Ministers and MPs from Karnataka to safeguard the state's interests. While addressing a press conference at Vidhana Soudha, DK Shivakumar said, 'As per the Krishna Tribunal's order, Karnataka can increase the height of the Alamatti dam to 524 meters. Maharashtra, who was quiet when the order was pronounced, suddenly wrote a letter to our CM objecting to it. I appeal to all the Union Ministers and MPs with folded hands to protect the state's interest in this.' Shivakumar said that Fadnavis wrote a letter to Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah on May 9 stating that the Sangli and Kolhapur districts would face flooding if the dam's height is raised. He added, 'Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis has written a letter to our CM Siddaramaiah on May 9, raising objections to increasing the height of the Alamatti dam. Stating that Sangli and Kolhapur districts would face flooding if the dam's height is raised, the letter has asked for the re-evaluation of the plan. This letter is a shock to us. Maharashtra had never objected to this project till now. They had not raised any issues when the Tribunal passed its judgement in 2010. Maharashtra had even submitted an affidavit to the Tribunal seeking to increase the height, but it is opposing it all of a sudden.' He said that CM Siddaramaiah will reply to the Maharashtra CM's letter. 'This project is our right, as accorded by the Krishna Tribunal. Alamatti project is needed for the state, we don't want friction with our neighbouring state. The cost escalation is very due to delay in this project. We would need Rs 1 lakh crore for land acquisition for this project,' he said. For students of Vellarmala school, a new chapter in life
The students of Government Vocational Higher Secondary School at Vellarmala, Wayanad, who had lost their school building in the 2024 landslide, were welcomed to the school's new building on Monday (June 2, 2025) in a grand manner. The new building has been constructed on the premises of Government Higher Secondary School at Meppadi, where the Vellarmala school has been functioning since the landslides, by the Builders' Association of India (BAI), with modern classrooms and toilets. The students were welcomed by the teachers, accompanied by a band. As many as 25 teachers from the High School section, which achieved 100% results in the SSLC, and 11 teachers from the Higher Secondary section, which secured 83% results in Plus Two, were honoured for their 2024–2025 performance. National vice-president of BAI N. Raghunathan inaugurated the event held on the premises of Government Higher Secondary School. Headmaster (in charge) of the High School section V. Unnikrishnan presided over the event. The BAI had planned to construct 12 classrooms and 16 toilets for the school at a cost of ₹3 crore. While eight classrooms and 10 toilets have been completed, the remaining will be finished and handed over by the end of June. The six divisions of the high school, with 250 students, have been transferred to the new building. The two extra rooms are being used as the staff room and laboratory. The water purifier units and public address system set up by BAI at a cost of ₹2 lakh were also handed over during the inauguration. Meanwhile, Wayanad MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra extended her warm regards to the 'Praveshanolsavam' held in different schools in the region. The district-level Praveshanolsavam was held at Government Higher Secondary School, Munderi. In her message, Ms. Vadra wished that such an occasion would encourage cooperation and creativity among children, besides showcasing their academic and cultural talents.

CM to inaugurate excavation in Lakkundi today
Gadag: Chief minister Siddaramaiah will inaugurate excavation work at the historic site of Lakkundi, which is eligible and has all attractions to become a UNESCO World Heritage Site, on Tuesday, said district minister HK Patil. Speaking to reporters here on Monday, Patil said the CM will also visit the Lakkundi Open Archaeological Museum and the Kashi Vishwanath Temple before arriving in Gadag city. "Initiation of excavation at Lakkundi is a significant event. This will facilitate Lakkundi's recognition as a UNESCO World Heritage Site," he said. "The chief minister has promised necessary funding for the excavation, which will be conducted scientifically without financial hindrances. The first phase will begin with excavation on the premises of the Kote Veerabhadreshwara Temple. This will commence only after identifying the areas and obtaining approval," he said. The villagers of Lakkundi voluntarily came forward for the exploration of artefacts, and more than 1,200 relics were found in the first campaign itself. Already, five households in Lakkundi agreed to vacate their homes for the excavation. If 27 houses in Lakkundi are vacated, five temples will be clearly visible. Discussions were held with house owners regarding their relocation," the minister added. "Later, he will participate in the centenary celebrations of the Karnataka Kuruba Association and the Karnataka Kuruba Cooperative Credit Society at Sri Swami Vivekananda Bhavan in Gadag, at 12:50pm. Later, at 3:30pm, he will inaugurate the GNTTF Institute on the Gadag Co-operative Industrial Estate premises. At 4:30pm, he will participate in the inauguration of the Gadag-Betageri Trade, Culture, and Exhibition Authority at the District Auditorium and unveil the concept of the 34-acre authority," Patil explained.
