Biden didn't show signs of mental health decline, says ex-White House Press Secretary: ‘Aging happens quickly'

Mint04-05-2025
Former White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki said she never witnessed signs of former President Joe Biden's mental decline during her tenure, distancing herself from concerns raised after his widely criticised June 2024 debate performance.
'I never saw that person — not a single time, and I was in the Oval Office every day — that was on that debate stage,' Psaki said Friday on the Mixed Signals podcast.
Biden's poor showing in the debate against Donald Trump prompted widespread calls, even from within his own party, to exit the 2024 race.
Psaki emphasised that she left the administration in May 2022 and has seen Biden in person only once since then. She cautioned against drawing conclusions about his health post-tenure.
'I think cover-up is such a loaded phrase,' Psaki spoke in the podcast when asked whether White House aides shielded the public from Biden's cognitive decline. 'I don't know the facts of what was happening privately.'
Acknowledging the effects of age, Psaki said, 'I'm not a doctor, aging happens quite quickly.' She added, 'Were things that people saw during that period of time that were similar to that or would've been in a category of that? I don't know, possibly. And all these books are gonna tell us.'
Psaki argued that talk of a 'cover-up' implies criminal wrongdoing, and that such accusations are dangerous when no legal violations have been proven.
'A cover-up is often like a crime. People use that term when they refer to Watergate or the covering up of not sharing public information about a war,' she said.
She insisted that her former colleagues were well-intentioned: 'I would like to think they would not be a part of an active 'let's hide from the public what we see happening privately.''
When asked if the media had failed to scrutinise Biden's mental fitness, Psaki admitted, 'Maybe the media missed a lot, and so maybe in retrospect, there were major stories and moments missed.'
She also accused Republican operatives of shaping the public narrative prematurely. 'There was an aggressive all-out pitching operation from the right-wing and from the Republicans about Joe Biden's age and how he was in decline… the majority of which wasn't true, in 2019-2022,' she said.
Psaki suggested Biden's decision to run for reelection — and ultimately drop out in favor of Vice President Kamala Harris — had negatively impacted his legacy.
'I think a lot of his legacy has been based around this question of him running for reelection, him not being aware or not being honest with himself, about him not being [able] to do a full term,' she said.

'No direct deposit...': Texas Dems face paycheck restrictions amid walkout in redistricting standoff

Texas Democrats are under mounting pressure to return to the state as Republicans push for a quorum to advance key legislative measures on Friday. In a bid to compel Democrats back to Austin, Texas House Speaker Dustin Burrows sent out a memo to House reps requiring the lawmakers who broke quorum to collect their paychecks in person. House leaders announced that direct deposits will be suspended until a quorum is restored, meaning enough voting members must be present. 'Yesterday, Attorney General Ken Paxton and I took action to domesticate the civil arrest warrants in the state of Illinois seeking to make them enforceable beyond Texas state lines. I expect suits in other states will be forthcoming,' Burrows said in the chamber. Another surprise!! Trump abruptly fires IRS commissioner Billy Long, installs Scott Bessent as acting head — what's fueling this explosive leadership shake-up?

Synopsis Billy Long removed as IRS Commissioner in a surprise move by President Trump just weeks after his confirmation. The decision comes amid growing concerns over Long's lack of tax experience and past ties to questionable financial groups. Now, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent takes over as Acting IRS Chief, signaling a potential shift in Trump's tax agenda. The sudden change has stirred fresh political debate and raised questions about the IRS's future leadership. Billy Long has been removed as IRS Commissioner in a surprise move by President Donald Trump, just weeks after his confirmation by the Senate. The sudden decision has sparked political shockwaves in Washington, especially as Long—who had no prior experience in tax enforcement—was only recently sworn in. Now, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has stepped in as Acting IRS Chief, raising new questions about Trump's long-term tax agenda and how this leadership shakeup could impact the future of the nation's top tax agency. Trump Removes IRS Commissioner Billy Long Just Weeks After Confirmation: Bessent Named Acting Head- In a surprising political shakeup, President Donald Trump has removed Billy Long as IRS Commissioner, less than two months after his Senate confirmation, and named Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent as the new acting head of the Internal Revenue Service. The decision has sent ripples through Washington, raising questions about the direction of U.S. tax policy and leadership stability at the nation's top tax agency. Billy Long, a former Republican Congressman from Missouri, was confirmed by the Senate on June 12, 2025, with a narrow 53–44 vote and officially sworn in on June 16, 2025. His tenure, however, was cut short on August 8, just 54 days later. The White House has not issued a detailed explanation for his sudden removal, but insiders suggest a strategic reassignment could be in the works. According to reports from Bloomberg, CBS News, and Reuters, Long is now being considered for an ambassadorial role, although no specific country or timeline has been announced. Scott Bessent, the current Treasury Secretary and a close ally of President Trump, was named acting IRS Commissioner immediately after Long's dismissal. Bessent will lead the agency temporarily while the Trump administration considers a permanent replacement. Known for his financial acumen and leadership in global investment firms, Bessent's appointment could signal a shift toward more aggressive tax enforcement and modernization efforts inside the IRS. His temporary elevation also consolidates further financial power under the Treasury Department, as he continues to serve as Treasury Secretary while overseeing the IRS. This abrupt reshuffling comes at a time when the Trump administration is pushing forward with ambitious tax policy reforms and intensifying scrutiny on high-net-worth individuals and corporate tax practices. With the 2025 fiscal year underway, the White House is also under pressure to maximize IRS efficiency and increase federal revenue collection without triggering political backlash. The move aligns with broader efforts by the Trump administration to place trusted insiders in top federal roles, ensuring alignment with his second-term economic agenda. While Long's removal from the IRS may appear abrupt, multiple sources, including Politico and the Associated Press, indicate that he is being tapped for a diplomatic post, most likely as U.S. Ambassador to an undisclosed nation. Such a transition would not be unusual, especially considering Long's long-standing loyalty to Trump and foreign policy interests in key strategic regions. Though no official nomination has been announced, several Senate aides say a confirmation process for a new ambassadorial appointment could begin as early as this fall. With Bessent temporarily in charge of the IRS, the coming months could bring operational changes at the agency, particularly around digital infrastructure, audits, and taxpayer services. As Treasury Secretary, Bessent has championed modernization of financial systems and may now extend that vision to tax administration. Meanwhile, the sudden removal of a sitting IRS Commissioner so soon after confirmation underscores how volatile and fast-moving federal leadership decisions have become under the Trump presidency. Such a rapid firing—just weeks into a six-year IRS Commissioner term—remains unprecedented in recent U.S. history. The move may reflect growing urgency within the White House to install leaders with tighter alignment to President Trump's evolving economic and international strategy. It also adds to a broader pattern of personnel shifts across multiple federal departments as Trump solidifies his executive team heading into the second half of his term. The shakeup is part of a broader White House strategy to reinforce tax policy control and executive alignment. IRS operations may temporarily shift under Bessent's dual leadership, focusing on modernization and efficiency. As the Trump administration continues to reshape its federal leadership team, the sudden removal of Billy Long and the appointment of Scott Bessent as acting head of the IRS mark a pivotal shift in the administration's strategy to consolidate control over key financial institutions. This move not only underscores President Trump's intent to install loyalists in critical roles but also signals a more aggressive push toward tax enforcement, institutional modernization, and fiscal realignment ahead of upcoming legislative battles. With Bessent now overseeing both the Treasury and the IRS, the White House is poised to drive its economic agenda with tighter command, setting the stage for significant policy developments in the months ahead.Q1: Why did President Trump remove Billy Long as IRS Commissioner?Billy Long was removed due to controversy over his qualifications and past financial ties.
