Pune civic body calls emergency meeting as Covid cases rise
Amid the recent rise in Covid-19 cases, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has called for an emergency meeting on Monday to review the situation and strengthen its response strategy to combat the infection, said officials.
As per officials, since May, Pune city has witnessed a significant surge in Covid cases. PMC has reported 64 new Covid-19 cases in just six days (June 1 to June 6), marking a noticeable uptick compared to the previous month. The city recorded 108 cases in May. While the numbers remain relatively low, officials are concerned about the potential for a further spike, especially with the arrival of the monsoon season.
Officials from PMC health department, public health department and rapid response task force which includes—National Chemical Laboratory (NCL), National Institute of Virology (NIV), BJ Medical College and private hospitals experts—will attend the meeting, said officials.
Pune municipal commissioner Naval Kishore Ram has asked civic departments concerned and healthcare officials to attend the meeting. Discussions will focus on strengthening surveillance, ensuring availability of medicines and hospital beds, ramping up testing, and refining public communication strategies, said officials.
According to statement issued by PMC, 21 fresh Covid cases were reported and 18 patients were discharged after treatment on Saturday. The city has 61 active cases, of which 52 are in home isolation and nine are hospitalised and two on oxygen support. Since January, Pune city has reported 137 Covid cases, said officials.
Dr Nina Borade, health chief, PMC, said, 'We are closely monitoring the rise in cases. The SOPs have already been issued for management of Covid-19 patients. Our aim is to be fully prepared and prevent any outbreak.'
As per the statement issued by the public health department, Maharashtra on Saturday reported 86 fresh Covid cases with 31 from PMC, 28 from Mumbai and seven from Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation. Since January, 1,362 Covid cases and 18 deaths amongst the infected have been reported.
Furthermore, there are 595 active cases in the state. Since January, Mumbai has reported 640 cases, of which 634 cases were reported in May alone, said Dr Babita Kamlapurkar, joint director of health services.

Government and expert advisories issued In response to the surge, the central government has issued advisories urging readiness and vigilance at the state level. Vulnerable groups—particularly the elderly and those with underlying health issues—have been advised to exercise caution and seek prompt medical attention if symptoms appear or worsen. The Indian Medical Association has recommended that people continue to observe preventive measures such as mask-wearing and hand hygiene to reduce the risk of transmission.

India's active Covid cases rise to 6000; Kerala leads with sharp rise
New Delhi, June 8 (UNI) Active Covid-19 cases in India have crossed the 6,000 mark following a surge of nearly 400 new infections reported in the past 24 hours. The country also recorded six Covid-related deaths during this period, with three fatalities reported from Kerala, as per the data available from the Union Health Ministry. As of now, India has 6,133 active cases and a cumulative death toll of 65. Kerala continues to report the highest number of active infections, nearing the 2,000 mark, making it the state with the largest current caseload. In the last 24 hours, 378 new cases were reported from across the States. After Kerala, Gujarat has emerged as the second-worst affected state, experiencing a significant rise with 105 new infections recorded between June 7 and June 8, pushing its active cases to over 820. In Kerala, an increase of 144 cases in a single day underscores the high transmissibility of the JN.1 COVID-19 variant. Protein mutations such as NB.1.8.1 and LF.7, although associated with mild symptoms, are noted for their rapid spread. West Bengal added 71 new cases, bringing its active case tally to 693. Delhi saw a comparatively modest increase of 21 new infections, with the capital's active caseload reaching 686. Conversely, Karnataka reported a notable decline, with over 75 fewer active cases, bringing its total down to 366. Meanwhile, Maharashtra is touching the 600-case mark. Notably, among the six recent fatalities, Kerala reported three deaths: a 51-year-old kidney transplant recipient, a 64-year-old man with diabetes, cancer, and kidney disease, and a 92-year-old individual with multiple comorbidities, including heart disease and cancer. All suffered respiratory complications and tested positive for Covid-19. Karnataka reported two deaths—a 46-year-old and a 78-year-old male—both of whom had pre-existing heart and lung conditions and were found to be Covid-positive during routine examinations. Tamil Nadu recorded one death due to Covid. Respiratory complications were the major factor for these fatalities. Covid-19 in India: Active coronavirus cases cross 6,000; six deaths in last 24 hours
NEW DELHI: Active Covid-19 cases in India crossed 6,000-mark with six deaths reported in the last 24 hours, according to the Union health ministry data released on Sunday. 769 new infections have been reported in the last 48 and Kerala remains the most affected state. This is followed by Gujarat, West Bengal and Delhi. The country has 6,133 active cases. Officials noted that majority of the cases were mild and are being treated at home. Since January, the country has recorded 65 Covid-related deaths. As of May 22, there were 257 active cases nationwide. Official sources said that state and district surveillance teams under the Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme are actively tracking cases of Influenza-Like Illness (ILI) and Severe Acute Respiratory Illness (SARI). "Testing is recommended for all admitted SARI cases and 5 per cent of ILI cases as per guidelines, and positive SARI samples are sent for Whole Genome Sequencing through the ICMR VRDL network, " PTI reported quoting official source said. Technical review meetings were conducted on June 2 and 3, led by Sunita Sharma, director general of health services, to assess the situation and readiness efforts.
