Giants reach historic low not seen in nearly a century
The San Francisco Giants haven't been very good coming out of the All-Star break. They've won just two of their past seven games during that span, and on Sunday, they were on the receiving end of yet another defeat, this time a 5-3 loss to the New York Mets, which, conversely, have the best record in MLB since the All-Star intermission. This loss seals the series sweep in the Mets' favor, plunging the Giants further down their misery.
The Giants' offense has ranked 24th since coming out of the All-Star break, scoring 37 runs in nine games, but it's in the Mets series where they simply couldn't make their opportunities count. On Sunday, they went hitless in seven at-bats with runners in scoring position, with Matt Chapman's two home runs driving in their three runs on the night (his two-run shot in the bottom of the fifth was with Willy Adames at first base).
With yet another poor night at the plate overall, the Giants made some history that they would rather erase from the books. As pointed out by Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area, the Giants went 0-23 with runners in scoring position in the series sweep against the Mets — their first time in franchise history going hitless in at least 20 at-bats with runners in scoring position since 1931 — nearly 100 years ago.
This level of play simply won't suffice for a Giants team that is contending with the other figurative giants of the division. They have been keeping in step with the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Diego Padres for most of the year, but their 2-7 start since the ASB has them falling off the pace with only a few days left prior to the trade deadline.
Giants to sell or buy prior to the trade deadline?
The Giants are currently sitting two games above .500 with a 54-52 record. If the season were to end today, they would be on the outside looking in on the playoff picture, sitting three games behind the third and final Wild Card spot with two teams ahead of them.
Conventional wisdom would dictate that the Giants will try to compete and add a few more pieces to aid in their push for a Wild Card spot. Their offense certainly needs a jolt after scoring just five runs total in their horrific series against the Mets. They better operate with some urgency, however, if they were to go this route as there are only a few days left before the trade deadline passes.

Collins hits 3-run homer, Priester stifles Braves in Brewers' 3-1 win
ATLANTA (AP) — Isaac Collins hit a three-run homer, Quinn Priester allowed just one more hit over seven innings after surrendering a first-pitch home run, and the Milwaukee Brewers beat the Atlanta Braves 3-1 on Monday night. Alonso pulls within one of Strawberry, but Mets fall to Guardians after comeback bid
NEW YORK (AP) — Pete Alonso hit his 251st career homer Monday night to pull within one of Darryl Strawberry's New York Mets franchise record, but the Cleveland Guardians earned a 7-6, 10-inning win after squandering a five-run lead. Gabriel Arias' 440-foot, three-run homer to left-center ended a five-run sixth inning against Sean Manaea, who surrendered RBI singles to David Fry and Carlos Santana earlier in the inning. Alonso, starting at designated hitter for the 59th time in his career, hit a 388-foot blast to left-center in the bottom half against Slade Cecconi. The slugger has three homers in his last four games. Alonso had his fourth hit, an RBI single, in the eighth, before Mark Vientos delivered the game-tying sacrifice fly. Cade Smith (4-4) escaped a bases-loaded, one-out jam in the ninth. Automatic runner Daniel Schneemann scored the tie-breaking run in the 10th, when third baseman Brett Baty threw the ball wide of second on David Fry's bunt against Ryan Helsley (3-2). Isiah Kiner-Falefa drives in winning run in bottom of the ninth to lift Pirates over Giants 5-4
PITTSBURGH (AP) — Isiah Kiner-Falefa's fielder's choice scored Jack Suwinski with the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning as the Pittsburgh Pirates rallied to beat the San Francisco Giants 5-4 on Monday night. Kiner-Falefa hit a hard ground ball to first baseman Rafael Devers but Suwinski beat the throw home. Joey Bart's RBI single off Randy Rodriguez (3-3) earlier in the inning tied the score. It was the fifth walk-off RBI of Kiner-Falefa's career. Dauri Moreta (1-0) pitched a scoreless inning in his second appearance of the season for the win. Suwinski's two-run home run in the seventh inning off Carson Seymour cut the Giants' lead to 4-3. Justin Verlander gave up one run and three hits over five innings but was denied his 264th career win when the Pirates overcame a 4-1 deficit after Jung Hoo Lee's two-run triple in the fifth inning gave the Giants a three-run lead.
