CBS News CEO Wendy McMahon steps down
CBS News and Stations president and CEO Wendy McMahon on Monday announced she is stepping down from her role, according to a memo sent to staff from Paramount co-CEO George Cheeks. McMahon also oversaw CBS Media Ventures, the network's syndication unit.
Why it matters: Her resignation comes as CBS' parent company Paramount considers settling a $20 billion lawsuit from President Trump over a segment on "60 Minutes."
Zoom in: No new executives are directly replacing McMahon, according to Cheeks' memo.
On the news side, CBS News president Tom Cibrowski and CBS Stations president Jennifer Mitchell will each report directly to Cheeks moving forward.
On the syndication side, CBS' ad sales and programming leads, Scott Trupchak and John Budkins, will now report to Bryon Rubin, CBS' chief operating officer and CFO.
McMahon will stay on with the companies for a "few weeks to support the transition," Cheeks wrote.
Catch up quick: McMahon joined CBS as president and co-head of CBS News in 2021 from ABC. She split the role with Neeraj Khemlani who stepped down from his position in 2023.
After Khemlani's departure, McMahon was named the sole president and CEO of CBS News Stations and CBS Media Ventures.
The big picture: Under McMahon, CBS News expanded its streaming efforts and rejiggered its primetime lineup. But those editorial changes were at times overshadowed by controversies around the company's coverage.

Meta to introduce ads and subscriptions on WhatsApp
Meta announced that it is adding ads and subscriptions to its WhatsApp messaging app in a June 16 press release. The social media giant, primarily known as the parent company of Facebook, said that the changes will roll out over the next few months and that they are intended to help businesses and organizations grow. "People really want to chat to businesses on their own terms, and they want to do it in a place where they already spend their time, which is on WhatsApp," Nikila Srinivasan, vice president for product management at Meta said on a call with reporters, according to CBS News. The new ads will show up on the "Updates" tab where they can start a conversation with an advertiser by clicking on its status. Meta introduced the "Updates" tab in 2023, where users can follow businesses and organizations for news and other announcements. "If you only use WhatsApp to chat with friends and loved ones, there will be no change to your experience at all," Meta said in the press release. Channel operators will be able to offer subscriptions to exclusive content when the new features roll out. Channels can also pay to be promoted to the app's 1.5 billion users. "For the first time, channel admins have a way to increase their channels' visibility," Meta said in the press release. A company spokesperson told CBS News that Channels will remain free to users. Meta purchased the app in 2014 and WhatsApp co-founders Brian Acton and Jan Koum left the company after Meta sought ways to monetize the app as well as data privacy concerns, the Wall Street Journal reported in 2018. In a 2012 blog post, Acton and Koum wrote, "we wanted to make something that wasn't just another ad clearinghouse" and called ads "insults to your intelligence."

Netanyahu doesn't rule out targeting Iran's supreme leader
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday didn't rule out targeting Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, just hours after reports emerged that President Trump nixed a plan by Israel to take out Khamenei. 'It's not going to escalate the conflict, it's going to end the conflict,' Netanyahu told ABC News's Jonathan Karl when asked about the reports that Trump rejected the plan because it was concerned about escalation. Asked if Israel intended to target Khamenei, Netanyahu responded that his country was 'doing what we need to do.' Israel on Thursday launched a massive military operation targeting Iran's nuclear capabilities. Nearly two dozen of Iran's senior military commanders and top nuclear scientist have been confirmed dead. Multiple outlets, including CBS News, the Associated Press and Reuters reported Sunday night that Israeli forces had an opportunity to assassinate Khamenei, but Trump rejected the proposal. Netanyahu responded to the reports in a Fox News 'Special Report with Bret Baier' interview on Sunday without directly answering to whether there is an assassination plot. 'There's so many false reports of conversations that never happened and I'm not going to get into that,' he told Baier. 'We will do what we need to do and I think the United States knows what is good for the United States and I'm just not going to get into it.'
