US woos Cook Islands on deep-sea mining
The State Department on Monday said the two countries are discussing how to advance exploration and production of minerals within the Cook Islands' exclusive economic zone. The agency also highlighted that American companies are already operating there.
The Cook Islands are a chain of 15 islands scattered between Hawaii and New Zealand.

'The United States of America and the Cook Islands are proud U.S.-linked firms sit at the forefront of deep seabed mineral research and exploration in the Cook Islands, which reflects strong and shared U.S.-Cook Islands seabed minerals interests,' the two countries said in a joint statement.

'The thanks we get': Grady Judd shares anger over ICE recruitment emails sent to deputies
In February, Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd hosted 20 other law-enforcement leaders from across Florida to emphasize their commitment to supporting the Trump Administration's aggressive efforts to deport undocumented immigrants. Judd and other sheriffs pledged to assist U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement in deportation actions. At the news conference, Pinellas County Sheriff Bob Gualtieri emphasized that local agencies were providing help because ICE lacked the resources to find the 1.4 million people targeted for deportation. Now, Judd says he feels betrayed by the federal government. He cited an ICE recruiting campaign that he said seeks to poach officers from his and other Florida law-enforcement agencies. 'We're their force multipliers, and this is the thanks we get for helping them do their job?' Judd said last week in a nationally televised interview week with MSNBC. He added: 'I mean, that's biting the hand that's feeding you. And I am angry.' Judd referred to a recruitment email that Madison D. Sheahan, ICE's deputy director, sent directly to hundreds of his deputies. The federal agency is offering potential $50,000 signing bonuses (requiring a five-year commitment) and the repayment of up to $60,000 in student loan debt. The email included a link to a government recruitment website bearing an image of Uncle Sam, with the headline, 'AMERICA NEEDS YOU.' Judd, a Republican who has strongly support President Donald Trump's push for increased deportations, blamed Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem for the recruitment campaign. Noem's department has authority over ICE. 'Kristi Noem needs to get on her big girl pants and do what's right,' Judd said in the TV interview. 'She needs to make sure that there's an apology.' DHS offers no apology In response to an inquiry from The Ledger, DHS sent an email with a statement from a senior DHS official. Cameras on school buses Polk County Schools' program is on hold until appeal process is set 'ICE is recruiting law enforcement, veterans, and other patriots who want to serve their country and help remove gang members, child pedophiles, murderers, terrorists, and drug traffickers,' the statement said. 'This includes local law enforcement, veterans, and our 287(g) partners who have already been trained and have valuable law enforcement experience.' The statement continued: 'Additionally, more than $500 million from President Trump's One Big Beautiful Bill will go to increasing our 287(g) partnerships with state and local law enforcement. Like hiring, we're supercharging our efforts to fulfill President Trump and the American people's mandate to remove the worst of the worst from our country.' As of Aug. 4, the Sheriff's Office had not received an apology from Noem, spokesperson Scott Wilder said. 'Sheriff Judd's displeasure is not because ICE is recruiting,' Wilder said by email. 'He understands the need and he support's ICE's need and right to recruit. He is upset with the way they are doing it — directly emailing our deputies using our email data that we supplied to them as a process (and requirement) of getting our deputies credentialed. The PCSO remains committed to assisting ICE in their mission.' The Polk County Sheriff's Office has long participated in ICE's 287(g) program, which deputizes local officers to help in immigration enforcement. The Florida Legislature enacted a law in this year's session mandating that all local law-enforcement agencies take part in the 287(g) program. As of early 2025, the president of the Florida Sheriffs Association announced that jails in all 67 counties, all but 10 operated by sheriff's offices, had signed agreements with ICE to hold detainees until federal agents can seize them. Judd is one of four sheriffs appointed to the State Immigration Enforcement Council, an advisory council for the newly created state Board of Immigration Enforcement. PCSO is also recruiting PCSO declines to say exactly how many deputies have undergone the training required to assist ICE through the 287(g) partnership. In the interview, Judd said that 'hundreds' had done so. The Sheriff's Office does not pay any feel to ICE or the Homeland Security Investigations Academy for the training, Wilder said. Wilder said he was not aware of any Polk County deputies who had quit to join ICE. The Sheriff's Office has 68 current vacancies for deputies, Wilder said, out of a total allocation of 840 positions. PCSO has 55 enrolled in the law enforcement academy, for a net vacancy of 13 deputies, he said. The Polk Sheriff's Office is engaged in its own recruiting campaign. It is offering a $20,000 sign-on bonus for experienced, full-time sworn law enforcement officers, plus a moving allowance of $2,000 for those in other Florida counties and $5,000 for those out of state. The current starting salary is $62,993. Judd is not the only Florida sheriff critical of ICE's recruiting campaign. 'ICE actively trying to use our partnership to recruit our personnel is wrong and we have expressed our concern to ICE leadership,' Gualtieri, also a Republican, said, as reported by NBC News. Jonathan Thompson, executive director and CEO of the National Sheriffs' Association, said he planned to send a 'very stern note' to ICE about the campaign. 'This is inappropriate behavior of a partner organization,' Thompson said, according to NBC News. 'We're all on the same boat. And you just don't treat friends or partners like this.'
