US lawmakers wants Mark Zuckerberg to end Instagram's new Map feature; writes letter saying: 'Meta has made it difficult...'
US lawmakers
have asked Facebook-parent
Meta
's CEO
Mark Zuckerberg
to end Instagram's new Map feature. Senators
Marsha Blackburn
(R-TN) and
Richard Blumenthal
(D-CT) recently sent a letter to Zuckerberg requesting him to "immediately abandon" the feature. They are concerned that this new feature, which was rolled out by the social media giant last week and can show users' locations in real time, may expose children to risks from 'pedophiles and traffickers,' among other dangers. The company has said that the feature will allow users to have their live locations appear on a public map only if they opt in. However, some users have reported that their locations were posted without their consent.
The US senators even accused Meta of having an 'abysmal' track record for protecting young users while noting that the company's parental controls are insufficient and deliberately confusing.
'Meta has made it difficult for parents to fully understand or utilise parental controls, leading to abuse, exploitation, and victimisation of these precious children,'
the senators wrote in the letter (as seen by The New York Post), pointing at Meta's parental controls.
Criticising Instagram's new Map feature, the senators said:
'This addition is a cause of particular concern for us when it comes to children and teens that are active on Instagram. Meta's platforms have been consciously designed to prioritise profit over the protection of its most vulnerable users: our children.'
The lawmakers also noted that children often accept follow requests from strangers, and allowing them to share their real-time location "will only increase the dangers children face online due to your inaction."
'While Meta has argued that parents with supervision settings on their children's accounts have control over their location settings, it is clear that existing parental controls are not sufficient,'
the senators continued.
What Meta said about concerns brought forward by US lawmakers
In a statement to The Post, a Meta spokesperson did not comment on the data-sharing complaints but reiterated that the feature was entirely optional.
'Instagram Map is off by default, and your live location is never shared unless you choose to turn it on. If you do, only people you follow back — or a private, custom list you select — can see your location,'
the company's spokesperson said.
Earlier, Blumenthal and Blackburn had targeted Meta through the 2024 Kids Online Safety Act, which was aimed at establishing formal protections for children on social media platforms.
While the bill cleared the Senate, it failed to pass the House and was reintroduced in 2025. In April, they also wrote to Meta, alleging the company was
'failing to protect underage users from sexually explicit conversations with a new class of AI-powered digital chatbots.'

Kangana Ranaut Slams Jaya Bachchan Over Selfie Incident, Calls Her Spoilt and Privileged
Mumbai: Actress and politician Kangana Ranaut has shared a sharp reaction to Jaya Bachchan's unfortunate selfie incident, calling the veteran actress a 'spoilt and privileged' woman. On Wednesday, veteran actress and Samajwadi Party's MP was seen getting angry at a fan who tried to take a selfie with her as she arrived at the Constitution Club in Delhi. Losing her temper, Jaya pushed the man back with great force, saying, "Yeh kya kar rahe ho? (What are you doing)" After this, the man stepped back. During the incident, fellow parliamentarian and Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Priyanka Chaturvedi was also present with Jaya Bachchan. Bashing her political opponent for her recent behavior, Kangana reshared the video on her Instagram stories and wrote: 'Most spoilt and privileged woman. People put up with her tantrums/nonsense just because she is @amitabhbachchan ji's wife. That Samajwadi topi looks like a rooster comb, while she looks like a rooster cock!! Such disgrace and shame.' However, this is not the first time Kangana has taken a dig at Jaya Bachchan. Back in 2020 as well, Jaya Bachchan had attacked Kangana for calling the film industry a 'gutter.' Responding to this, the 'Emergency' actress penned on her X (formerly Twitter) timeline: 'Jaya ji, would you say the same thing if it was your daughter Shweta who was beaten, drugged, and molested as a teenager? Would you say the same if Abhishek faced constant bullying and harassment, or if he was found hanging one day? Show compassion for us also.' Prior to this, Kangana had wholeheartedly welcomed the government's decision to ban OTT platforms such as Ullu, ALTT, and Desiflix for showing soft porn content. Speaking exclusively to IANS, Kangana lauded the government's decision, saying that it was important in order to preserve our culture and future generations. "In order to preserve the overall culture of our country and the future path of our youngsters, and so that our society does not collapse completely, this step was much awaited and is now much appreciated. The action taken against these apps, especially the illegal ones, is highly appreciated", the 'Simran' actress said.

Malin Ackerman says her role in Netflix's The Hunting Wives is inspired by Melania Trump
Malin Ackerman said in an interview last week that her new Netflix series, The Hunting Wives, used first lady Melania Trump as a main reference for her role as a manipulative politician's wife who has affairs. Malin Ackerman said the creative team told her to think of Melania Trump when playing Margo(Instagram/@malinakerman, Melania Trump/ Facebook) Speaking to Vulture, Ackerman said the creative team told her to think of the first lady when playing Margo, a Texas housewife married to a wealthy aspiring politician with a past involving murder, adultery and abortion. 'During filming, she says, the series' creative team described Margo as a bit like Melania Trump, someone who 'came into a marriage to this rich man as one woman,' then finds the expectations for her have shifted once he becomes politically ambitious,' per the outlet. 'That was the only reference, really,' Ackerman added. Her character's past includes growing up poor, doing sex work, and having multiple affairs. 'But once her husband, Jed (Dermot Mulroney), decides to run for governor on a pro-gun, anti-abortion, happy-marriage platform, Margo realises the increased public scrutiny could threaten everything she has built for herself, exposing elements of her life Jed's voters won't like,' Vulture stated. Among the secrets are 'the abortion she just had after her boyfriend, a high school student, got her pregnant; the murder she committed to cover up that fling; and the affair she's currently having with new-to-town Sophie (Brittany Snow).' Ackerman said she also drew inspiration from her impression of 'high society' types, who she sees as lacking authenticity. Also Read: Is Netflix's 'The Hunting Wives' based on a real story? Everything we know about the thriller 'Other than that, it's just high society. I've mingled with aristocrats and high-society people and seen the games that go into it. For lack of a better word, I wouldn't say 'authenticity' is how those people lead,' she said. She described Margo as a 'survivor' who acts out of necessity to get ahead. Melania Trump's lawyer forces Carville to pull Epstein remarks Melania Trump has often been a focus of media attention since her husband's 2016 presidential campaign. Last week, her lawyer forced Democratic strategist James Carville and his Politics War Room podcast team to remove comments suggesting she met Donald Trump through a modelling agency linked to Jeffrey Epstein. At the start of the episode, Carville said, 'After the episode, we received a letter from Melania Trump's lawyer. He took issue with our title of one of those YouTube videos from that episode and a couple of comments I made about the first lady. We took a look at what they complained about, and we took down the video and edited out those comments from the episode. I also take back these statements and apologise.'

Orthodox Church head slams Kerala govt's liquor policy
Kottayam: Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church head Baselios Marthoma Mathews III urged the state govt to change its liquor policy for the sake of homemakers and children. In a Facebook post on Tuesday, the Catholicos said that even the CPI, a major constituent party in the LDF govt, has criticised the govt's flawed alcohol policy. This policy endangers the family environment, he said. The Catholicos also recalled the advertisement slogans of the LDF ahead of the elections. The slogans read, "LDF govt is committed to making Kerala alcohol-free", "If LDF comes to power, a people's movement for alcohol prohibition will be initiated" and "We are opening schools, not the bars you closed". The above policy statements are best examples of slogans that serve only market interests, he said. When the first Pinarayi govt came to power, there were only 29 bars in the state, but now their number is nearing a thousand. The alcohol policy has become a line drawn on water, and the Keralites are realising this from the daily news. To buy rice to abate hunger, you have to put your fingerprint at the ration shop, while alcohol is delivered to your doorstep. Homes that used to fear the head of the family coming home drunk after work can now see alcoholics drinking from morning itself and ruining families. It is not commendable for the govt to simplify the access of a harmful substance to homes, he added. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI).
