KANGAR: Two investment projects worth RM1.56 billion have been approved for the Lembah Chuping Industrial Zone (CVIA) near Padang Besar, according to Perlis Menteri Besar Mohd Shukri Ramli today.
The approvals came from the CVIA Development and Investment Management Committee (JPPPCVIA), chaired by the Perlis State Secretary, he said.
However, the state government has yet to disclose the investors' identities as the projects remain in early stages, with confidentiality and funding still being finalised.
'Caution is necessary to protect all stakeholders involved,' Mohd Shukri said during a session at the Perlis State Legislative Assembly.
He added that Phase 1 infrastructure covering 440 acres is complete and ready for incoming investors, with JPPPCVIA closely monitoring all planning and project approvals to ensure high standards.
Separately, Mohd Shukri said the Sanglang Integrated Jetty (SIJ) project is expected to begin after Phase 1 of the Perlis Inland Port (PIP) starts full operations in the first quarter of 2026.
The SIJ project aims to boost Perlis's logistics, tourism, aquaculture and fisheries sectors by improving jetty facilities for commercial and cargo vessels. It is projected to create 3,000 jobs.
Development of PIP is progressing rapidly, with Phase 1 operations slated to start on Sept 22. The port will enhance regional economic growth by serving as a strategic logistics hub, facilitating trade between Malaysia and Thailand.
'With PIP operational, it will complement key projects within the Northern Corridor Economic Region (NCER), including CVIA, Chuping Agro Valley, NCER Agribio Economic Zone and Perlis Super Fruits Valley,' he said. - Bernama

PKENPs unveils new strategy to boost Perlis revenue and growth

KANGAR: The Perlis State Economic Development Corporation (PKENPs) will implement a new strategy to enhance revenue and competitiveness, including expanding operations outside the state. Menteri Besar Mohd Shukri Ramli stated that the initiative follows the appointment of a new management team and draws inspiration from Johor Corporation (JCorp) and Terengganu State Economic Development Corporation (PMINT). 'With this new direction, PKENPs aims to increase revenue, reduce debt and explore sustainable business sectors,' he said during the Perlis State Legislative Assembly sitting at Kompleks Seri Putra. The announcement came in response to a query from Megat Hashirat Hassan (PN–Pauh) regarding PKENPs' plans under its new leadership. Mohd Shukri outlined PKENPs' three- to five-year investment plan, covering commercial, special, community, and manufacturing projects. These projects will be developed in the Chuping Valley Industrial Area (CVIA), existing industrial zones in Pauh Putra, Arau, and Padang Besar, as well as a proposed new site in Kuala Perlis. 'These developments will focus on four key nodes comprising Kangar, Padang Besar, Kuala Perlis and Arau, in line with the Perlis Structure Plan 2040,' he said. Additionally, PKENPs plans to construct a Women and Children's Hospital and a postnatal care centre in Kangar, reinforcing its role as the state's administrative hub. – Bernama

Perlis floods: RM780K compensation paid to padi farmers

KANGAR: More than 2,600 hectares of paddy fields in Perlis were damaged by floods between September and December last year, with compensation amounting to RM780,146.28, the Perlis State Legislative Assembly was told today. State Agriculture, Plantations and Consumer Affairs Committee chairman Razali Saad said a total of 2,639.53 hectares were affected, with all impacted farmers receiving full payments through the Padi Crop Disaster Fund Scheme (TBTP). He said the Agriculture and Food Security Ministry has since strengthened the compensation mechanism through the Padi Crop Takaful Scheme (STTP), managed by Agro Captive Takaful Ltd (ACTL), a subsidiary of Agrobank. 'A total of 860 eligible farmers have been identified under the scheme, particularly those affected by floods in November and December 2024. To qualify, they must be registered under the Federal Government Padi Fertiliser Assistance Scheme (SBPKP),' he said. Razali was responding to a question from Wan Zikri Afthar Ishak (PN–Tambun Tulang) regarding the status of affected farmers and the compensation measures. Under the STTP, eligible farmers may receive RM1,500 per hectare for padi crops aged below 50 Days After Sowing (HLT). Razali said the compensation is currently undergoing verification and approval by Agrobank, and will be credited directly into recipients' accounts upon clearance. - Bernama
