Zawya22-07-2025
Alibaba Cloud, the digital technology and intelligence backbone of Alibaba Group, has been recently named a market leader in Omdia's latest report, 'Market Radar: GenAI Cloud Titans in Asia & Oceania 2025.' The report positions Alibaba Cloud in the 'Leader' quadrant, highlighting its generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) capabilities and comprehensive product portfolio across the Asia & Oceania region.
Alibaba Cloud is named one of four leaders among nine global vendors evaluated in Omdia's report, receiving the highest 'Advanced' rating in seven out of nine categories. Among the four companies designated as "Leader," Alibaba Cloud received the most "Advanced" ratings. The report evaluated nine key dimensions, including GenAI models, model optimization, GenAI infrastructure, development platforms, deployment, security, and developer community engagement.
'Alibaba Cloud offers end-to-end technology capabilities, including foundation models, GenAI platform, infrastructure, and applications. This positions it as a significant competitor in the global GenAI landscape,' said Omdia in the report.
The Omdia report highlighted Alibaba Cloud's strong position in the GenAI market, pointing to its full-stack GenAI solutions, comprehensive and developer-friendly AI platform offering and open source initiatives. Through its Model Studio and Platform for AI (PAI), Alibaba Cloud offers enterprises a user-friendly environment for building and deploying GenAI applications, supported by cutting-edge infrastructure including the PAI-Lingjun Intelligent Computing Service, according to the report.
'GenAI has captured the imagination of businesses in Asia and around the world, and we are grateful to be recognized for our leadership in helping companies implement its capabilities. Our commitment to open source is central to this, driving innovation through one of the largest AI ecosystems in the world. As we accelerate into the AI era, we want to make it as easy as possible for companies to harness the power of this technology and will continue to enhance our model family and solutions to ensure they have the support they need to thrive,' said Jingren Zhou, Chief Technology Officer of Alibaba Cloud Intelligence.
Since August 2023, Alibaba Cloud has actively contributed to the open-source AI community, releasing over 200 advanced AI models. These open-source efforts have resonated widely, as evidenced by the Qwen family surpassing 400 million downloads on platforms like Hugging Face and ModelScope and over 140,000 models built on Qwen by third parties, making it one of the most prominent AI model families worldwide.
As of January 2025, more than 290,000 customers across various sectors, including robotics, healthcare, education, finance, and automotive, have adopted Qwen models via Model Studio, Alibaba's generative AI development platform. This momentum underscores Qwen's role in accelerating AI-powered digital transformation across industries in China.
Omdia's report also notes that the GenAI software revenue in Asia & Oceania is estimated to be $5.5 billion in 2025. The market is expected to grow more than four times, reaching $19.8 billion in 2029. Currently, 27% of enterprises in Asia & Oceania are already deploying GenAI solutions, with an additional 33% piloting GenAI in at least one business function.

India's Modi to visit China for first time in 7 years as tensions with US rise

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit China for the first time in over seven years, a government source said on Wednesday, in a further sign of a diplomatic thaw with Beijing as tensions with the United States rise. Modi will go to China for a summit of the multilateral Shanghai Cooperation Organisation that begins on Aug. 31, the government source, with direct knowledge of the matter, told Reuters. India's foreign ministry did not immediately respond to a request for comment. His trip will come at a time when India's relationship with the U.S. faces its most serious crisis in years after President Donald Trump imposed the highest tariffs among Asian peers on goods imported from India, and has threatened an unspecified further penalty for New Delhi's purchases of Russian oil. Modi's visit to the Chinese city of Tianjin for the summit of the SCO, a Eurasian political and security grouping that includes Russia, will be his first since June 2018. Subsequently, Sino-Indian ties deteriorated sharply after a military clash along their disputed Himalayan border in 2020. Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping held talks on the sidelines of a BRICS summit in Russia in October that led to a thaw. The giant Asian neighbours are now slowly defusing tensions that have hampered business relations and travel between the two countries. Trump has threatened to charge an additional 10% tariff on imports from members - which include India - of the BRICS group of major emerging economies for "aligning themselves with Anti-American policies." Trump said on Wednesday his administration would decide on the penalty for buying Russian oil after the outcome of U.S. efforts to seek a last-minute breakthrough that would bring about a ceasefire in the war in Ukraine. Trump's top diplomatic envoy Steve Witkoff is in Moscow, two days before the expiry of a deadline the president set for Russia to agree to peace in Ukraine or face new sanctions. Meanwhile, India's National Security Adviser Ajit Doval is in Russia on a scheduled visit and is expected to discuss India's purchases of Russian oil in the wake of Trump's pressure on India to stop buying Russian crude, according to another government source, who also did not want to be named. Doval is likely to address India's defence cooperation with Russia, including obtaining faster access to pending exports to India of Moscow's S400 air defence system, and a possible visit by President Vladimir Putin to India. Doval's trip will be followed by Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar in the weeks to come. EXPORT IMPACT U.S. and Indian officials told Reuters a mix of political misjudgement, missed signals and bitterness scuttled trade deal negotiations between the world's biggest and fifth-largest economies, whose bilateral trade is worth over $190 billion. India expects Trump's crackdown could cost it a competitive advantage in about $64 billion worth of goods sent to the U.S. that account for 80% of its total exports, four separate sources told Reuters, citing an internal government assessment. However, the relatively low share of exports in India's $4 trillion economy is expected to limit the direct impact on economic growth. On Wednesday, the Reserve Bank of India left its GDP growth forecast for the current April-March financial year unchanged at 6.5% and held rates steady despite the tariff uncertainties. India's government assessment report has assumed a 10% penalty for buying Russian oil, which would take the total U.S. tariff to 35%, the sources said. India's trade ministry did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The internal assessment report is the government's initial estimate and will change as the quantum of tariffs imposed by Trump becomes clear, all four sources said. India exported goods estimated at around $81 billion in 2024 to the U.S. (Reporting by Nikunj Ohri Sarita Chaganti Singh Shivam Patel in New Delhi; editing by Aftab Ahmed, Raju Gopalakrishnan and Mark Heinrich)

Minister of Planning, Economic Development and International Cooperation Discusses with Vietnamese Deputy Prime Minister the Implementation of Leadership Directives for the Sixth Joint Committee Meeting

H.E. Dr. Rania A. Al-Mashat, Minister of Planning, Economic Development, and International Cooperation, held a bilateral meeting with Mr. Bui Thanh Son, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Vietnam, and Ms. Phan Thi Thang, Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade. This meeting took place during the visit of H.E. Luong Cuong, President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, to Egypt, where he met with H.E. President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi. At the beginning of the meeting, H.E. Dr. Rania Al-Mashat welcomed the Vietnamese Deputy Prime Minister, and highlighted the continuous development of relations between the two countries, which is reflected in the exchange of high-level visits, the meetings between the two countries' leaders, the convergence of many shared visions and positions, and the announcement by the two presidents to elevate their relations to the level of a Strategic Partnership. The Minister of Planning, Economic Development, and International Cooperation explained that since establishing full diplomatic relations in 1963, Egypt and Vietnam have maintained distinguished historical ties. She pointed out that 2025 marks the 62nd anniversary of these diplomatic relations, which have seen close cooperation to achieve development in accordance with shared interests. H.E. Dr. Rania Al-Mashat and the Deputy Prime Minister of Vietnam discussed preparations for the sixth session of the Joint Committee, in implementation of the directives of the two countries' leaders. They also highlighted the importance of the agreement reached during the current presidential visit to form sub-committees in areas of mutual interest to leverage available potential and open up more avenues for cooperation. H.E. Dr. Rania Al-Mashat added that Egypt is Vietnam's largest trading partner and its most important export market in North Africa. Each country serves as a strategic gateway for the other's exports—Egypt to the Middle East and Africa, and Vietnam to the Asian market. The mutual will to strengthen bilateral relations is further demonstrated by two historic presidential visits: H.E. President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi's visit to Vietnam in September 2017 was the first by an Egyptian president, and the late Vietnamese President H.E. Tran Dai Quang's state visit to Egypt in August 2018, which was also the first of its kind. The two sides also touched on the importance of holding a business forum and workshops during the next Joint Committee meeting to exchange knowledge in areas such as economic development strategies, attracting foreign investment, aquaculture, entrepreneurship, green development, and development financing. Cooperation in exchanging expertise on renewable energy was also discussed. H.E. Dr. Rania Al-Mashat also reviewed the measures taken by the government to enhance the business and investment environment and implement economic and structural reforms to increase the competitiveness and attractiveness of the Egyptian market for private sector companies from Vietnam. She reiterated Egypt's appreciation for Vietnam's development experience and its keenness to strengthen the partnership and benefit from that experience through the exchange of knowledge and expertise between the two countries. For his part, the Vietnamese Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs lauded the development achievements made by Egypt in various sectors, and expressed his welcome to the elevation of bilateral relations to a Comprehensive Partnership. He also emphasized the necessity of creating an executive plan to finalize the agreements reached during the meeting between the two presidents. It is worth noting that Egyptian-Vietnamese relations date back to the 1960s. In 1997, an agreement was signed to form a joint ministerial committee, which has held five sessions to date. Vietnam is a founding member of the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank. In 2017, H.E. President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, President of the Arab Republic of Egypt visited Vietnam, the first visit by an Egyptian president to the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, and the visit witnessed the signing of numerous joint cooperation documents.
