
PM Modi announces $200 million for modernisation of Angolan armed forces
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday (May 3, 2025) announced a $200 million Defence credit line for Angola and expressed commitment to act firmly and decisively against terrorists and their backers, an assertion that came days after the Pahalgam terror strike.
PM Modi made the remarks after holding wide-ranging talks with Angolan President Joao Manuel Goncalves Laurenco that focused on ramping up overall bilateral ties, including in areas of digital public infrastructure.
In his media statement, the Prime Minister said Mr. Laurenco's visit to India not only gives a new direction to the bilateral relations but also strengthens the India-Africa partnership.
"I am pleased to announce India's $200 million defence credit line to support modernisation of Angola's defence forces," he said.
The Prime Minister also said that there was a discussion on repair, overhaul and supply of defence platforms as well.
India will also share its capabilities with Angola in the areas of digital public infrastructure, space technology and capacity building, Modi said. "We have also decided to further strengthen our relations in areas of healthcare, diamond processing, fertiliser and critical minerals."
The Prime Minister also said, "We are committed to taking firm and decisive action against terrorists and those who support them."
Highlighting the importance of ties between India and the African Union, he said, "We are partners in progress, we are pillars of the Global South."
Mr. Laurenco arrived in Delhi on Thursday on a four-day trip.

Guided by his resolve for 'Aatmanirbhar Bharat', the nation has embraced self-reliant innovation and expanded its influence in trade and technology, it added. "India's Rise in 11 Years: Power, Partnerships, and Progress," it said, putting out the government's initiatives and subsequent changes in different fields. India's defence exports have soared to Rs 23,622 crore in 2024-25 from Rs 1,940 crore in 2014-15, the post said, noting the country also unveiled its first indigenous aircraft carrier in INS Vikrant. It said, "This is the story of India's rise as a confident, decisive, and respected global leader driven by PM Modi's bold vision and unwavering commitment to a stronger Bharat." India's missile power had its precision and reach elevated, it said, mentioning Brahmos extended range version, which was successfully test-fired from Su-30 MKI, among others. The threat also highlighted India's robust ties with other countries, noting the inking of its "historic" trade deal with the UK and comprehensive economic power agreement with the UAE. Highlighting India's commitment to global peace, it said the country stands as a leading force in UN peacekeeping, with over 2.9 lakh troops deployed across 50 missions worldwide. During the pandemic, India also provided two lakh COVID-19 vaccine doses to UN peacekeepers, supporting health and safety on the frontlines of peace, it added.

The meeting was part of his two-day visit to Switzerland and came during his official tour to Switzerland and Sweden from June 9 to 13, 2025. In a social media post on Tuesday, the minister shared, 'Spent an engaging evening with Indian business delegates. Held insightful conversations on exciting opportunities, partnerships, and new avenues for trade & investment between India & Switzerland, emerging from the India-EFTA Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement.' The India-EFTA (European Free Trade Association) Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement, which was recently signed, has opened new doors for enhanced cooperation between India and EFTA member countries, including Switzerland. Goyal's discussions with the business delegates focused on how to best leverage the agreement to boost economic ties. Earlier on Monday, the minister began his Switzerland visit with a lunch interaction with CEOs of select Swiss companies and prospective investors who are exploring investment possibilities in India. The meeting provided a platform for the business leaders to share their plans and learn more about India's investment environment. In another social media post, the minister also talked about his visit to the Swiss Parliament, where he met with Swiss Federal Councillor Guy Parmelin. Sharing the experience, Goyal said, 'Had a wonderful experience today visiting the Swiss Parliament and meeting my friend @ParmelinG, Swiss Federal Councillor. Had the opportunity to view some precious lithograph paintings, titled Cortege, made by the renowned Swiss-French architect Le Corbusier during his stay in Chandigarh in 1960. Truly a proud moment and a reflection of the longstanding artistic and cultural ties between India and Switzerland.' "Matter of great pride for Haryana": Nayab Singh Saini on Hisar-Chandigarh air service
Chandigarh (Haryana) [India], June 10 (ANI): Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini travelled in the inaugural flight from Chandigarh to Hisar on Monday. The Chief Minister called the launch of the new air service a 'matter of great pride for Haryana' and said it would boost development and accessibility in the region. Speaking to the mediapersons after the flight, Saini said, 'Under the leadership of Prime Minister Modi, the country has taken a big leap of development. Work has been done with progress... Today, the work of connecting Hisar to Chandigarh has been done; this is a matter of great pride for Haryana.' The new air service has been scheduled to run twice a week, providing a faster travel option between the state's capital and one of its major cities. The Chief Minister added, 'This flight will run two days a week and our people will get a lot of benefit from it. This is an important step in the direction of the resolution taken by Prime Minister Modi that even a person wearing slippers can travel by air.' He also hinted at future expansion of the service, saying, 'In the coming time, more flights will start from Hisar.' Earlier on Friday, the Chief Minister also announced a series of development projects worth crores of rupees for the Palwal assembly segment, covering sectors such as sports and education. The projects will also boost civic amenities for the region. Addressing a public meeting in Palwal, the Chief Minister announced that an international-level modern sports complex will be constructed in Palwal. In addition, the local indoor stadium will be upgraded with soundproofing for Rs 55 lakh. He also announced Rs 50 crore for the development of basic infrastructure such as parking facilities, rainwater drainage, sewerage systems, and water supply in Sector-21, Transport Nagar. The Chief Minister also announced that 75 roads covering 152 km in the Palwal assembly constituency are currently under warranty and will be repaired by the concerned agencies. In addition, Rs 37.57 crore was sanctioned for repairing eight roads spanning 37.5 km, and Rs 40.18 crore for renovating 26 roads covering a length of 54.5 km. The release mentioned that among other key announcements were Rs 50 lakh for remodelling the Janauli distributors and Rs 13 crore for constructing a VR bridge in five villages. He also announced a 66 KV substation in Mustafabad and a 220 KV substation in the Line Par area of Palwal, subject to land availability. The Chief Minister also announced opening two new schools in Palwal city, following departmental norms and land availability. He announced that a new grain market would be set up outside Palwal city, upon land availability. In Wards 1 to 10, the kutcha streets in residential colonies will be paved. An allocation of Rs 5 crore was announced to construct community centres in villages across the Palwal assembly constituency. (ANI)
