Cops seize 44kg of drugs worth RM4.6m in Manjung raids

IPOH: Police have arrested four individuals, including a couple, and seized 44 kilogrammes (kg) of an assortment of drugs worth RM4.6 million in four separate raids in the Manjung district.
Perak police chief Datuk Noor Hisam Nordin said they arrested the jobless couple, aged 28 and 24, in a house in Simpang Tiga, Sitiawan at about 7.30 pm on Monday (May 5).
'Upon inspection, police found methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA) in the house and on a motorcycle parked in front of the house, weighing 15.6kg,' he told a media conference at the Perak Police Headquarters here today.
Noor Hisham said they then arrested a 50-year-old man at an apartment in Taman Sejati, Sitiawan at 8.55 pm the same day and seized 127 grammes of ketamine and Erimin 5.
He said the three suspects then led police to the discovery of 11.4kg of MDMA and 299 grammes of ketamine in a house used as a drug storage, where police also seized RM970 cash, at about 7.19 am on Tuesday (May 6).
He said that all three suspects, who tested positive for Erimin 5, had police records related to crime and drugs.
Noor Hisam said the syndicate is believed to have been active since March and the drugs seized could have been used by 90,516 addicts.
He added that the suspects have been remanded for a week until May 12 to assist in investigations under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
Meanwhile, Nor Hisam said police also arrested a 29-year-old delivery man at a hotel in Jalan Mohamad, near Sitiawan, at about 5 am on Monday (May 5).
'The suspect led a police team to a car parked in front of the hotel. Upon inspecting the car, police found 16 compressed blocks of dried leaves suspected to be cannabis weighing 16.6 kg and worth an estimated RM51,500, as well as RM500 in cash.
'The suspect tested positive for cannabis and also has prior criminal and drug-related records,' he said, adding that the suspect has been remanded until May 11 to assist in their investigation.

Judge Afidah Abdul Rahman convicted Abdul Sarip Ahmad, 45, from RPR Tudan here on his own guilty to a charge under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, punishable under Section 39C(1)(b) of the same Act. The Section provides for imprisonment of between five and seven years, and not more than three strokes of the cane, upon conviction. The court ordered the prison sentence to commence from the date of arrest, and for the accused to be placed under supervision by the police and National Anti-Drugs Agency for a period of two years upon his release. Based on the facts of the case, Abdul Sarip was arrested after testing positive for amphetamine and methamphetamine at the Miri Central Police Station at around 12.30pm on April 14, 2024. He has two prior convictions for the same offence, dated Jan 16, 2014 and April 27, 2023. Deputy Public Prosecutor David Bakit Nuing prosecuted, while the accused was unrepresented by legal counsel.

Gerik bus crash: Bus driver arrested

IPOH: The bus driver who was involved in an accident that claimed the lives of 15 students of Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) in Gerik, last Monday (June 9), has been arrested by the police. Perak Police Chief Datuk Noor Hisam Nordin said the 39-year-old man was arrested at around 5.45pm after being discharged from the hospital, reported Sinar Harian. According to him, the suspect would be taken to the Gerik District Police Headquarters (IPD) to assist in the investigation under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987. "We are waiting for further instructions from the State Prosecution Director on whether the bus driver can be charged in court tomorrow or otherwise," he said on Thursday (June 12). The driver, a local man, had previously received treatment at Taiping Hospital after injuring his hand on the first day of the accident. On the morning of June 9, KM53, Jalan Raya Timur-Barat (JRTB) Gerik-Jeli near Tasik Banding, a bus carrying 42 passengers was said to have lost control before hitting an MPV carrying a family of four. The incident happened when the specially chartered tour bus was on its way from Jertih, Terengganu, to the UPSI campus in Tanjung Malim after the Hari Raya Aidiladha holiday.
