A new report from ASB and Lincoln University shows how smarter, more diverse land use could unlock billions in value for farmers and the wider economy, transforming the future of food and fibre by rethinking how we use our most valuable asset – our land.
The Future Use of Land and How to Fund It, a collaboration between ASB and Lincoln University's Centre of Excellence in Transformative Agribusiness, outlines how land use optimisation across the food and fibre sector could significantly boost the country's GDP, while also delivering social and environmental benefits.
Developed with input from leaders across the primary sector, including dairy, horticulture, sheep and beef, agritech, finance and government, the report explores four possible futures for New Zealand. Each scenario focusses on a single factor that will impact the food and fibre sector, for example greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions targets, or the government's goal to double export values, and pushes them to the extreme, demonstrating the pressing need for change.
The research sets out seven transformational pathways, such as diversifying farm systems to introduce mixed revenue streams, increasing horticultural production, and unlocking underutilised Māori land. It demonstrates how better land use, paired with innovative funding, can unlock sustainable value across rural New Zealand.
Researchers have also developed a land transition model, providing land-use insights on a regional level. Agri-consultants can use the model to help inform potential paths forward for farmers.
'The food and fibre sector has always been a key driver of our economy, yet many producers operate on slim margins. We speak with farmers every week who are deeply committed to their land and legacy but grapple with viability, as they're not getting the returns to operate sustainably into the future,' says ASB's General Manager Rural Banking, Aidan Gent.
'This research brings together the insights and tools to help landowners make informed decisions for future prosperity.'
Rural land use transformation needed at scale
Alan Renwick of Lincoln University says optimising land use by just 10% could add $10 billion in value to the economy if it's done in the right way, and this, or even more could be achieved in the next 5-7 years.
'The challenge facing the food and fibre sector is how to meet economic, environmental and social goals simultaneously. This requires practical, future-focused solutions – like integrating horticulture into traditional pastoral systems, developing on-farm processing to capture more value locally, or growing Māori agribusinesses around high-value niche products like manuka honey or native botanicals,' he says.
'We know these innovations are happening in pockets across Aotearoa – some stand out examples are included in our report as case studies – but we need to see this kind of transformation at scale.'
ASB launches New Zealand-first land use optimisation programme
Taking the research findings to the farm, ASB is launching Every Hectare Matters, a unique programme to support farmers to diversify and future-proof their businesses. This will begin with a small group of farmers, before being extended widely early next year.
The programme will pair participants with independent agri-consultants, who will use the new land transition model to help guide farmers through diversification and implementation scenarios, with wrap around support and tailored funding from ASB to bring their new business model to life.
ASB's response to land optimisation was inspired in part by ASB customer High Peak Station in Canterbury, a once-traditional sheep and beef farm that has evolved into a diversified, family-run operation spanning tourism, honey, hunting and livestock. While their journey hasn't been without challenges, the High Peak experience demonstrates what's possible when landowners take a multigenerational view of land use.
Aidan Gent says: 'This is about working alongside farmers ready to explore new opportunities – enabling change across generations, and helping farms stay in families. We're not just backing farmers with capital. We're backing them with insights, partnerships and the long-term thinking that makes meaningful transformation possible.'

Pasifika staff taking pride in cultural work attire
A Samoan community engagement staffer at a New Zealand bank says the company's Pasifika uniform raises awareness "of our many Pasifika cultures". Pacific attire, such as the ie faitaga for men and puletasi for women, has become a regular part of professional dress at ASB. Niuafolau Joel Amosa said the first question from his Samoan family was how it would be perceived. "But I think being 2025, you know, everything's available to be yourself," he said. "And I think outside of that, just proud that ASB have jumped on board and supported us from start to finish. "If anything, it raises awareness of our many Pasifika cultures. And it also allows a bit of curiosity - to be asked, what is that? And allows for just a nice touch of bringing your full self to work." He said he feels like it's connected with the daily routine of Samoan life or Pasifika life. "You wear your best when you go to work, when you go to church, so it's a big sign of respect. And so I feel very at home to where Pasifika attire in amongst a corporate environment and also outside." In 2013, Niuafolau graduated from the University of Otago and took a position as a receptionist at the ASB head office in 2015. Niuafolau now looks after a team of community bankers and the relationship manager of schools. She said as a Pasifika committee, they wanted "our people to be comfortable in their own skin". "Bringing their whole self to work each day." Other New Zealand companies like Air New Zealand have also been developing in this space. Air New Zealand's Samoa country manager Samantha Imo-Munif said when Air New Zealand rolled out their uniform, it was about the visibility of culture in a workplace. "Seeing the Ie faitaga embraced in our new Air New Zealand uniform, designed by Emilia Wickstead, is incredibly meaningful. "It's more than just a uniform element; it's a visible expression of identity, respect, and cultural inclusion." She said the uniform change has also resonated with Air NZ's Samoa-based team. She said the company's Apia team played a key role in how the piece was incorporated into the uniform. "The response has been overwhelmingly positive, with many of our Pacific colleagues expressing pride in seeing their culture acknowledged so authentically." The Pacific engagement manager at Auckland University of Technology, Lemoa Henry Fesuluai is also a Samoan lecturer and cultural expert. He said he is all for promoting cultural attire. "When I was at school, when students were coming with their Ie faitaga or the long dress for the ladies, for the females, I was always trying to make sure that it maintained the same value of the school - that [it] aligned with the values of the school - as well as maintaining our Pacific beliefs and principles and customs; in the sense that it wasn't worn disrespectfully or wasn't worn out of a wrong colour; that it still aligned well with the school uniform requirements and regulations. "I am all for the for seeing that stuff, and it's great to see, because now what I think it is - despite what people may think in terms of the business ventures or that part of what people may critique - is that I see now that that's the evolvement of where as a nation that we're moving to. "And it's taken X amount of years to get to this part where we're looking at the importance of dress code and attire. "It's understanding that that attire in our sense is the formal attire; it's the cultural wear that's widely accepted in our society." "This was an initiative driven by our people," she said. "ASB's been a proud supporter of Polyfest for the last 40 years, and so in this 50th year - very special year of Polyfest - creating this uniform and having it ready for the 50th year of the festival, just seemed like the perfect way to honour that connection." The collection features a men's sulu and a women's top and skirt set. "It was designed collaboratively with input from our Pasifika network community. Every piece has cultural meaning and significance. So we really wanted it to be something that our people could wear with pride and with respect." Clarke said the response has been "overwhelmingly positive". "What I've loved seeing is that both our Pasifika staff and non-Pasifika staff have both really expressed an interest in wanting to wear this uniform. And even better, we've heard from our customers of Pasifika heritage that when they visit an ASB site and they see our people reflecting traditional Pasifika-inspired dress, it helps our customers feel a greater sense of belonging as well."

The push to power farms by solar
The Energy Minister Simon Watts has launched the Solar on Farms initiative at Fieldays - with plans for tools and data to be made available as well as moves to make financing these products easier. ASB Bank is offering interest free loans up to $150,000 over 5 years. It comes as joint venture company Farmlands Flex adds its launch of a software product that will help connect solar systems to batteries and the grid. Farmlands Flex chief executive is Andrew Pegler and Becks Smith is founder of Solayer - a company installing solar systems on farm.

'Trump Of The North' Will Not Seek Re-Election As Mayor
A controversial Northland mayor will not be standing for a second mayoral term. In a shock move, Kaipara Mayor Craig Jepson on Tuesday confirmed he would not be standing for the $138,441-a-year position in the October local election. Mangawhai's Jepson (67) is instead backing Kaipara District Council (KDC) Deputy Mayor Jonathan Larsen (54). Jepson appointed Larsen to the deputy role in October 2022. And Jepson - who has referred to himself as the "Trump of the North" - will be standing as a councillor in his Kaiwaka-Mangawhai ward. The position pays $68,719 annually. Jepson's about-turn comes after consistently indicating he will be standing for a second tilt at the Kaipara mayoralty. He would not be drawn on the reason for the tack change, other than to say he wanted to step down from the top job and spend more time on issues close to his heart as a councillor. Jepson's political move comes as first-term KDC councillor Ash Nayyar said for the first time that he would be taking a tilt at the top job. Dargaville's Nayyar believed too many KDC decisions were being made behind closed doors, and unnecessary pet projects were being adopted by the council. He said he was unhappy KDC, in his opinion, had generally ignored the voice of the people during public consultation. Nayyar claimed Kaipara's west had been neglected and as Mayor he would do all parts of the district justice. He has a Master of Business administration, Bachelors of Commerce and Law and 40 years' banking experience. Topuni's Larsen was first elected onto KDC in 2010. He resigned in protest in August 2012, just under two years into a three-year term. He said he left over his dissatisfaction with the council making closed-door decisions on the future of the controversial Mangawhai wastewater scheme, including $30 million in extra spending on the project. Larsen said he had brought this matter to the attention of the Auditor-General. government ministers and Ombudsman. The government appointed commissioners to run KDC in September 2012. Larsen was re-elected in 2016 and has been a KDC politician since. If successful in October, it would see him elected for a fifth term. He has a Bachelor Science, and an Executive Master of Business Administration with first class honours. Jepson's big calls as mayor In his first controversial move, Jepson canned karakia from council meetings in November 2022, just two months into the job. KDC later became the only council to can its Māori ward in August 2024 after government law changes - one of Jepson's proudest achievements, and one which was also backed by Larsen. Jepson said he was proud of his council's "small" 8.2 percent rates rise for 2025/2026. He said another positive move was his council withdrawing from national councils' representative body Local Government New Zealand. The mayor said there were a range of issues he wanted to work on as a councillor. Getting rid of mangroves would be one of the major issues he wanted to invest in. "I want to get rid of mangroves from our harbours, not just Mangawhai Harbour, but Kaipara Harbour and the whole of Northland," Jepson said. Jepson said he also wanted to boost the fight against Auckland's Dome Valley landfill - which is just across the local political border in Auckland Council - and educate people about the merits of waste to energy technology. He has strongly campaigned for such a plant in Kaipara. Larsen and Jepson jointly conducted information visits to constituents around Kaipara on the plants. Meanwhile, Jepson has long-challenged current science backing climate change. KDC axed its Ruawai-based Northland climate change pilot midstream. KDC also got rid of its key climate change policy in 2023 in a move brought to the council table by Larsen. Larsen said that even if climate change was a reality, the actions of Kaipara's 18,000 ratepayers would not make a jot of difference in a world with 8 billion people. Jepson was elected with a big majority in 2022. Jepson said that many had encouraged him to stand again, to do a "lap of victory", but being a local politician was not about ego. It was about what was best for the district.
