Ration supply through Fair Price Shops from June 1: Manohar

The Hindu21-05-2025

Civil Supplies Minister Nadendla Manohar said that the State Cabinet has decided to supply rations exclusively through fair price shops in the State from June 1 onwards.
Addressing a press conference at the Secretariat on Tuesday, the Minister said that the Cabinet had decided to provide ration supplies at the doorstep to those above 65 years of age, and physically challenged. It is a reversal of the previous YSRCP government's practice of supplying them through MDUs (Mobile Dispensing Units).
In the past, rice and other essentials were distributed through 29,000 fair price shops. The previous YSRCP government dismantled the system under the pretext of introducing MDUs. Around ₹1,000 crore was wasted on procuring 9,260 mobile dispensing units. Beneficiaries had no platform to raise their grievances. An IVRS survey revealed that 30% of people weren't receiving rations. Once the vehicles took over, there was no accountability — it became unclear where the goods were going, he said.
The Minister said that hundreds of criminal cases were filed against the MDU operators. A 'green channel' was allegedly created for illegal transport of rice. How can 9,000 vehicles cater to 29,000 shops? They fudged the numbers and diverted rice. The Civil Supplies Department was paying ₹27,000 per month per vehicle. 'After reviewing all aspects, we have decided to cancel this system,' he said, adding, 'From June 1, ration will be supplied only through fair price shops, which will remain open from the 1st to the 15th of every month.
The Cabinet has also decided to hand over the 9,260 vehicles free of cost to eligible beneficiaries.'
During the Cabinet meeting, it is learnt, the the Ministers expressed the opinion that ration vehicles are useful only on the day rice is distributed, and serve no real benefit otherwise. It was decided to take measures to deliver ration directly to the homes of the elderly and disabled. For all others, rice will henceforth be distributed only through fair price shops. Concerns were raised that ration distribution through vehicles is leading to opportunities for smuggling, resulting in misuse of the scheme. Ministers noted that ration shops allow beneficiaries to collect their goods at their convenience. There was also a discussion on whether cash transfers could be introduced in place of physical ration distribution, sources said.

Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu calls for victory rallies on June 12 to mark one year of NDA rule in Andhra Pradesh

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister and TDP national president N. Chandrababu Naidu has called upon the party leaders to organise victory rallies in all the constituencies on June 12 marking the completion of one year of the NDA rule in the State, and says he will discuss the way forward in a meeting of the MPs and MLAs of the TDP, JSP and BJP the same day. Addressing a teleconference with the Ministers, MPs, MLAs and MLCs on Saturday, Mr. Naidu said the welfare schemes and development activities should be explained to the people to let them know how the NDA was undoing the damage that had been done by the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) in 2019-24, when the State lost its reputation and was teetering on the brink of bankruptcy. The NDA could bring about a welcome change in the last one year and it had to sustain the positive momentum for the next four years. Mr. Naidu said he was getting the impact of the performance of the government and the TDP assessed from time to time in order to make up for any shortcomings. Also, the party was tracking how the leaders were functioning, on the basis of which they would be encouraged to do better, or set aside from their roles, he said. Those falling short of the expectations will pay the price for their inefficiencies,' Mr. Naidu said. Further, Mr. Naidu said he was reviewing the performance of the MPs and MLAs every six months. Those doing well would be vested with greater responsibilities. He observed that most of the MLAs and MPs got closer to the people through their work and brought good name for the party and government. 'The government cannot afford to let administrative mistakes cost its image. In this regard, the Ministers and other elected representatives must be vigilant,' he observed. The NDA was moving forward with all its strength to rebuild the State that had been destroyed by the YSRCP, which was apparently trying to throw a spanner in the works even after suffering an ignominious defeat in the general elections, he said. However, the NDA would not budge from its mission to make Andhra Pradesh a progressive State, Mr. Naidu asserted. Administrative clearances were given for investments amounting to ₹5 lakh crore. The government was committed to completing the Polavaram project by 2027, and the State could secure a financial package of ₹11,400 crore for the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant (VSP), while the ArcelorMittal-Nippon Steel was preparing to set up a massive plant in Anakapalli district, he said.

Police complaints lodged against journalist for ‘offensive remarks' against Amaravati women

Women farmers and representatives of various Amaravati Joint Action Committees (JACs) lodged a police complaint at Mangalagiri Rural police station on Saturday (June 7, 2025), demanding action against journalist and political analyst V.V.R. Krishnam Raju for his alleged derogatory remarks against women from the capital region during a debate show aired on Sakshi TV. They condemned the statement describing Amaravati as a 'capital of prostitutes' and termed it an 'outrageous insult' to the women who had parted with their land and participated in the historic capital movement. Meanwhile, Andhra Pradesh Assembly Deputy Speaker K. Raghu Rama Krishna Raju also lodged a complaint with the Director General of Police (DGP) on Saturday (June 7, 2025), seeking action against Mr. Krishnam Raju for making derogatory remarks about Amaravati and the women of Andhra Pradesh. Mr. Raghu Rama Krishna Raju condemned the reference to Amaravati as a 'capital of prostitutes,' calling it a 'disgraceful insult to the dignity of women'. He said such remarks reflect not only a biased narrative but also a severe breach of journalistic ethics and humanitarian values. The Deputy Speaker demanded that cases be registered against Mr. Krishnam Raju and senior journalist Kommineni Srinivasa Rao under IPC Sections 294, 354A, 500, 504, 505(2), and 509. He urged action against the television channel and the anchor involved, based on the telecast footage. The complainants, including leaders from the Amaravati Mahila JAC, Dalit JAC, and Rythu JAC, demanding a public apology from Sakshi TV and strict legal action. They alleged a targeted campaign by the YSRCP-supported media to defame Amaravati and disrupt its development. They accused former Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy-led YSRCP and his supporting media of demeaning women and stoking social tensions. Akula Jaya Satya (Women JAC), Vemuri Babu (Dalit JAC), T. Sambasiva, A. Ravi Kiran and others (Farmer JAC) and other leaders lodged the complaint. Lokesh condemns statements Meanwhile, IT and HRD Minister Nara Lokesh said that such disgraceful comments reflect the YSRCP's moral bankruptcy. Mr. Lokesh reaffirmed his commitment to women's welfare and economic empowerment.
