Kolkata: This Rath Yatra, Lord Jagannath rode in on fresh wheels in Kolkata. Last year's chariot ride on the worn-out Boeing Jumbo Jet tyres was particularly bumpy, compounded by the steering mechanism failure that left the chariot stranded on the day of Rath Yatra.
However, with the old tyres replaced by brand new ones from a fighter jet before this year's festival, the deities had a glitch-free journey on Friday.
This is the 54th year that Iskcon has organised the Rath Yatra in Kolkata and the first time that Russian fighter aircraft Sukhoi Su-30MKI tyres have adorned Lord Jagannath's chariot. All three chariots have been in use since the inception of the event over half a century ago.
The steel wheels of Lord Balabhadra's chariot were changed last year, while those of Devi Subhadra have undergone repairs in the past.
Around 2 lakh people thronged the 8-km route, through which the three raths travelled on Friday. Apart from them, around 100 foreigners from Russia, Ukraine, China, Japan, US, Canada, UK, France, and a few other countries participated in the festival in the city. This year, the turnout of foreigners was lower compared to previous years, as many have been unable to travel due to geopolitical tensions that have made air travel between Asia and the West challenging.

The Rath Yatra started at 1.45 pm from Hungerford Street, where the Iskcon temple is situated. It then turned left on to AJC Bose Road before turning right on to Sarat Bose Road. At the Sarat Bose Road-Hazra crossing, it turned right on to Hazra Road before again turning right on to SP Mukherjee Road. Thereafter, it had a long straight run through Ashutosh Mukherjee Road and then Chowringhee Road past Exide crossing, before it turned left on to Outram Road on reaching the Park Street-JL Nehru Road crossing.
After a brief run on Outram Road, the raths reached their destination at Brigade Parade Ground at 6.45 pm.
At the Brigade ground, the deities have been housed in a pandal resembling Puri's Jagannath temple. Iskcon vice-president Radharamn Das, who is in Digha to participate in the Rath Yatra there, said the pandal on Brigade ground was the Gundicha temple or 'Masir-bari', where the deities would reside till the return journey begins on Ulta Rath on July 5.

Deities embark on boat chariot procession in Chilika
1 2 3 Bhubaneswar: In a distinctive departure from traditional Rath Yatra, the holy trinity of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra and Devi Subhadra embarked on a unique water-borne sojourn at Kankan Sikhari, an islet in Chilika lagoon, on Friday. The deities are placed on a specially designed chariot mounted on three interconnected boats. "After the ceremonial Pahandi ritual, we took the deities to the chariot mounted on boats at 1pm. The divine procession circumnavigated the islet while devotees and priests chanted hymns and beat gongs during the journey. At 2.15pm, we brought the deities from the boat to a mandap on the islet," said Susanta Kumar Sahoo, president of the Shree Jagannath Leelakshetra Trust, which manages the temple affairs. He said the most crucial aspect is maintaining balance during the procession. "Skilled boat riders carefully manoeuvred the structure to prevent any accident. In Puri and other places, deities are brought out of the chariots on the next day of Rath Yatra. But we bring them out on the same day and keep them at a mandap in front of the temple for nine days before Bahuda Yatra," said Sahoo. Debendra Dash, secretary of the trust, said two buses were arranged for devotees from Bhubaneswar to participate in the festival in Chilika. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch vàng CFDs với mức chênh lệch giá thấp nhất IC Markets Đăng ký Undo "More than 250 people attended the festival. Many influencers and YouTubers from different parts of the state recorded the event with their drone cameras for those who could not attend the festival," he added. The islet, around 85km from Bhubaneswar, is accessible only by boat from Nairi in Khurda district. According to legends, in 1731, when Mughal Taqi Khan attacked the Jagannath Temple in Puri, idols of the sibling deities were hidden at Kankan Sikhari for 4 months and 16 days. The islet derives its name from 'Kankan' or 'Kankada' (spine gourd), which was offered to the deities during their stay. "Earlier, the idols were carried on a simple boat, but visibility was an issue due to lack of eight. In 2022, we innovated by creating a 25-ft-tall chariot mounted on three boats," said Sahoo. The festival, which began to be held in the islet in 2017, draws thousands of devotees. "Out of curiosity, many attend to see how Rath Yatra is organised on boat," said Arabinda Das, a member of the trust. The site has witnessed developments over the years, including the construction of a community hall by the Chilika Development Authority, installation of a solar power system, and an iron shed near the mandap. The islet also houses a wheel from Lord Jagannath's Nandighosh chariot, received from Shree Jagannath Temple Administration, Puri, in 2016.

AP inks Rs 10,328 cr in tourism MoUs, 22K jobs expected
Vijayawada: Andhra Pradesh govt on Friday signed more than 80 memoranda of understanding (MoUs) with leading international and domestic investors in the private tourism sector, amounting to 10,328 crore. The MoUs were formalized in the presence of chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu at the AP Tourism Tech AI 2.0 conclave here. These partnerships are expected to generate employment for 22,325 people and add 7,600 new hotel room keys across the state over the next four years. Naidu announced plans for robust tourism infrastructure, including a domestic airport in Madanapalle of Annamayya district. He extended an invitation to Patanjali Ayurved, led by Baba Ramdev, to develop a world-class wellness centre at Horsley Hills in Annamayya district, and proposed Baba Ramdev serve as a tourism advisor to the govt. Reaffirming tourism as a transformative force, Naidu remarked that while ideologies like socialism, capitalism, and communism may fade, "tourism will be the only 'ism' to endure", calling it a catalyst for sustainable growth. With a vision to evolve into a $2.4 trillion economy under the Swarnandhra @2047 blueprint, Naidu said the state aims for a 20% growth rate in tourism, scaling its contribution to the GSDP from 74,000 crore to 2.4 lakh crore by 2028-29. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Cuối cùng, chơi miễn phí game chiến thuật hay nhất 2025! This targets generating two million jobs through the tourism sector alone and enhancing the per capita income and standard of living of the poor in the state," Naidu noted. "Andhra Pradesh has the best temples, 21 of which generate wealth running into crores through hundi offerings and others. From ancient cities and a 1,000 km coastline to forest reserves and riverine systems like the Godavari and Krishna, the state's natural and spiritual assets are second to none. The govt is also developing seven anchor hubs, including Vizag, Araku, Rajahmundry, Amaravati, Srisailam, Gandikota, and Tirupati, and over 25 thematic circuits, including 10 temple circuits, 5 coastal, 4 river routes, 2 cruises, 2 Buddhist, and 3 ecotourism trails," Naidu mentioned. On the occasion, the CM launched the state's tourism digital calendar, strategy paper, brochure, and event schedule. Earlier in the day, he flagged off the caravan tourism initiative, promoting sustainable tourism in lesser-known destinations. Patanjali founder Ramdev Baba, tourism minister Kandula Durgesh, APTDC chairman Dr Nukasani Balaji, GFST director Cherukuri Kutumba Rao, and senior officials were present.
