More clashes and arrests at UK immigration protests
Demonstrators calling for mass 'remigration' gathered in central Manchester, northwest England, at a march organised by the far-right 'Britain First' group, which was confronted by anti-racism groups.
Meanwhile in central London, rival demonstrators converged outside a hotel housing asylum seekers, following similar recent events that have occasionally turned violent.
In Manchester, the two groups clashed briefly at the start of the protest before police split them up, according to an Agence France-Presse journalist at the scene.
'Send them back, don't let them in – just stop them coming in, we've got hotels full of immigrants and we've got our own homeless people in the streets begging for food but nowhere to live,' said protester Brendan O'Reilly, 66.
Counterprotester Judy, a 60-year-old retired nurse, told Agence France-Presse she was there 'because I don't want to see people full of hate on the streets of Manchester'.

UK-France ‘one in, one out' migrant returns deal comes into effect
A deal between London and Paris under which Britain can return some migrants who cross the Channel in small boats back to France will come into force on Tuesday, the UK Home Office announced. The agreement, which was struck between Prime Minister Keir Starmer and President Emmanuel Macron during the latter's state visit to the UK last month, involves a 'one in, one out' scheme to curb record levels of irregular Channel crossings. The two governments signed the final text last week, with the EU Commission giving its 'green light on this innovative approach', the UK Home Office said in a press release on Monday. UK authorities are 'operationally ready' and migrant detentions are expected to begin 'within days', it added. Under the scheme, migrants arriving to UK shores on small boats may be detained and returned to France if they are deemed ineligible for asylum. In exchange, Britain will accept an equal number of migrants from France who can apply for asylum via an online platform, giving priority to nationalities most vulnerable to smugglers and to people with ties in Britain. The number of migrants making the dangerous journey in flimsy dinghies this year crossed 25,000 at the end of July – the highest ever tally at this point in the year as Starmer struggles to stem the tide, or the growing domestic discontent.

Teenage boy and girl jailed in UK for the ‘sadistic' torture and killing of kittens
A UK judge on Monday sentenced two 17-year-old teenagers – a boy and a girl – respectively to one year and nine months in detention for the 'sadistic' torture and killing of two kittens. The boy had also wanted to kill a human and researched how to 'get away with murder', according to the prosecutor at London's Highbury Corner Youth Court. Two kittens were found cut open with ropes attached to them in a park in northwest London in May. Both kittens had pieces of flesh and fur apparently burned off them. Police also found knives, blowtorches and scissors at the scene. The two teenagers pleaded guilty to possessing a knife and causing unnecessary suffering to the animals. Neither can be named for legal reasons. I really wanted to murder someone. Every day I was researching how to get away with murder British teenager jailed for torturing and killing kittens District judge Hina Rai said the killings were 'without doubt the most awful offences against animals I have seen in this court'.
