Aircraft determine the required runway length for take-off by calculating the distance needed to reach the speed required to lift and then accelerate to take-off. Additional factors such as weight, altitude, temperature, runway conditions, and wind also impact the requirement.A Boeing 787-8 aircraft - the type that crashed on Thursday - typically requires 2,538 metres of runway length, pilots said.Data from a flight tracking website shows that AI171 departed using the full length of Runway 23 at Ahmedabad, which is around 3,500 metres long. The aircraft backtracked to the end of the runway before accelerating.Backtracking refers to an aircraft taxiing on a runway in the opposite direction of its intended take-off and is commonly done when the plane needs to use the entire runway length for take-off.In hot weather, like it was in Ahmedabad on Thursday (37 degrees Celsius), there could be a requirement for more length as warmer air is less dense, resulting in reduced lift and thrust, requiring the aircraft to use the full runway length.

NHAI starts removing road kerb to curb waterlogging
1 2 Bhubaneswar: In a bid to prevent waterlogging, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has taken up an initiative to remove the road kerb or concrete borders put up along some of the problematic sections of NH-16. NHAI officials said metal crash barriers, which are installed along the highway to prevent heavy damage to vehicles in case of any accident, are already serving the purpose the road kerb would do in similar circumstances. "We have identified some of the problematic sections of NH-16 within the city limits where waterlogging is an issue. We found the road kerb to be the reason behind it," NHAI project director (Bhubaneswar circle), Suraj Singh, said. Singh said that the drive to remove the road kerb has been taken up. "Presently, the work is ongoing on the service lane between Rasulgarh and Vani Vihar Square. Later, we will identify other problematic zones," he said. Road kerbs serve several purposes on roads and pavements. Primarily, they act as a physical barrier, preventing vehicles from veering off the road and ensuring pedestrian safety. They also play a crucial role in drainage, guiding water away from the road surface and into drainage systems. "Metal crash barriers are already installed, which are serving the primary purpose of road kerbs. For guiding the stormwater during heavy rain, other corrective measures will be put in place in the waterlogging-prone sections of the highway," an NHAI official said. NHAI is already taking several other measures to prevent waterlogging on NH-16 during heavy rain. The highway authorities are nearing completion of a connecting drain near Iskcon Temple, where waterlogging is a perennial issue. Besides, NHAI also plans to intensify its enforcement activities, especially against sand-laden trucks, which often contribute to waterlogging on the flyovers. Sand falling off such uncovered trucks often blocks the drainage system on the flyovers. "Last year, NHAI had almost resolved the waterlogging issues on the service lane. But a new problem of waterlogging arose on the flyover. The authorities need to take proactive measures to prevent the waterlogging," Chinmay Mohapatra, a resident of Acharya Vihar, said. Sale of luxury cars tumbles 18% in city
A 5% increase in lifetime road tax has brought down the registrations of luxury cars priced above ₹20 lakh in the city by 18% in 2024 compared to previous year. In 2023, 1,670 luxury cars were registered in Coimbatore, but the number declined to 1,376 in 2024. Cars priced above ₹20 lakh now attract a 20% lifetime road tax, replacing the earlier slab-based system. Under the previous structure, cars costing up to ₹10 lakh were taxed 10%, while those above ₹10 lakh were levied 15%. "A 5% hike in tax directly affects our sales. For example, if a car is priced at ₹40 lakh, buyers earlier paid ₹6 lakh as tax. Now, they must pay ₹8 lakh," said a manager at a luxury car showroom in the city. Transport officials noted an increase in out-of-state registrations, particularly in Puducherry, following Tamil Nadu's revised tax structure introduced in November 2023. Puducherry currently levies a flat 7% tax on cars priced above ₹10 lakh — significantly lower than Tamil Nadu's 20%. "Some residents in Coimbatore are registering their luxury cars in Puducherry to avoid the steep road tax in Tamil Nadu. We have started issuing notices to such owners, asking them to submit valid proof of residence. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Invertir en Cervecería Nacional CFD podría proporcionarte un ingreso adicional Empieza a invertir Registro Undo So far, 190 notices have been issued across Coimbatore Central, North, South, and West RTOs," said a senior transport official. "If a Puducherry-registered vehicle stays in Coimbatore for more than 30 days, the owner must inform the RTO concerned. If it remains in Tamil Nadu for over 12 months, it must be re-registered in the state." he said. Legal experts warn that such practices can have serious consequences. "Everything may appear legal on paper until the owner is involved in an accident or files an insurance claim. That's when address mismatches raise red flags," said advocate Hari Prashaanth Balashanmugam. "The Supreme Court has ruled that a vehicle without valid registration constitutes a fundamental breach of the insurance policy, which could lead to denial of claims. In the event of an accident, the owner might lose the entire claim — even repair costs." he said. "Any case involving forgery or false information can attract a jail term of up to seven years and a fine, under the Indian Penal Code and the Motor Vehicles Act," he added.
