RB Kingmaker confirms top-level credentials in QREC-sponsored Gr.1 (PA) Doha Cup
Doha
The experienced RB Kingmaker (Baseq Al Khalediah) landed a well-deserved Group 1 success in the 2000 metre contest for 4-year-olds and up in a top-class Purebred Arabian card of the QREC-sponsored Gr1 PA Doha Cup (Prix Manganate) at Deauville in France on Tuesday.
Khalifa bin Mohammed Al Attiyah, QREC Board Member, presented the trophies to the winners
Trained by Mme Jean-François Bernard, ridden confidently by Cristian Demuro, and racing in the colours of Helal Alalawi, the six-year-old horse delivered a powerful performance in a small but select field of five.
Restrained early to let the pacemakers do their job, RB Kingmaker sat fourth. With Joe Star (Al Mourtajez) increasing the pace in front, and Al Zwair (TM Fred Texas) tracking in second for stablemate Luwsail (Al Mourtajez), RB Kingmaker settled about four to five lengths behind the leading trio, while Moshrif (Dahess) travelled at the rear.
Still going strongly down the back straight, the order remained unchanged, but RB Kingmaker crept closer and joined the leaders approaching the final bend. In the turn for home, he travelled powerfully and swept past the fading Al Zwair to join Luwsail, who was being niggled along. Without being asked for maximum effort, RB Kingmaker quickly took the lead entering the final 400 metres and drew clear in dominant fashion to win by four lengths. Luwsail went a clear second, while Moshrif was third.
A very emotional winning trainer said after the race: 'He is an extraordinary horse. I want to thank Mickael Forest, who does an outstanding, precision job with his pacemaker. He set exactly the right pace at exactly the right moment. Cristian is a top jockey. He's a craftsman as well.'
Bred by Diane Waldron (USA), RB Kingmaker is out of RB Royale Madame (Majd Al Arab), a debut winner over 1200m on dirt at three. She has also produced RB Fassynator (Assy), Group-placed in the United States, and RB Kings Bay (General), a three-time winner over 1400m and 1600m.

Qatar to play Bahrain and Russia in friendlies in Doha ahead of crucial Asian Qualifiers Playoffs for FIFA World Cup 2026
Tribune News Network Doha The Qatar national football team will play two international friendlies against Bahrain and Russia in September as part of their preparations for the fourth round (play-offs) of the Asian qualifiers for FIFA World Cup 2026, the Qatar Football Association has announced. Al Annabi will face Bahrain in the first match on Tuesday, September 3, at the Al Thumama Stadium, before meeting Russia on Saturday, September 7, at the Jassim bin Hamad Stadium. Qatar is scheduled to host Group A matches of the Asian Qualifiers Play-off, where Al Annabi will face Oman on October 8, and meet the UAE on the 14th of the same month at the Jassim Bin Hamad Stadium. The upcoming two friendly matches represent an important technical opportunity for the technical staff, led by coach Julen Lopetegui, to assess players' readiness and prepare an ideal squad before the crucial qualifiers. Qatar advanced to the playoffs after finishing fourth in Group A of the third round of the Asian Qualifiers. Qatar players recently trained under Spanish coach Lopetegui at an overseas camp in Austria. Qatar are seeking a second consecutive FIFA World Cup appearance following their debut as hosts in 2022. Meanwhile, UAE are hoping for a second appearance at the Finals following their debut in the 1990 edition. In the Playoffs, the winners of two of the three-team groups, which will be played in October, will join already-qualified Australia, Japan, South Korea, Uzbekistan, Iran and Jordan at next year's expanded 48-nation finals in the United States, Canada and Mexico. The nations finishing in second place in each group will advance to a further round of qualifying, which will be held over two legs in November on a home-and-away basis. Asia has been granted eight guaranteed berths at the FIFA World Cup Finals. A possible ninth berth is available to the winner of November's match-up via an intercontinental playoff in March. Ahead of Al Annabi's overseas camp in Austria, coach Lopetegui had announced a 30-man roster featuring several notable changes. Al Sadd midfielder Guilherme Torres earned his first national team call-up, while former captain Hassan Al Haydos returned to the side for the qualifiers. Veteran goalkeeper Saad Al Sheeb was left out, with Marwan Sharif and Shehab Al Laithi brought in. The list also included two fresh defensive additions: Youssef Ayman (Al Duhail) and Abdullah Al Yazidi (Al Sadd). The four goalkeepers picked were Meshaal Barsham, Salah Zakaria, Marwan Sharif, and Al Laithi. Other key players in the team are Akram Afif, Almoez Ali, Boualem Khoukhi, Karim Boudiaf, and Pedro Miguel.

Al Wasmiyah Racing's Laffan remains unbeaten with Gr.1 (PA) victory in Al Rayyan Cup at Deauville
Tribune News Network Doha Laffan, the son of AF Al Buraq continued his flawless rise through the ranks with an authoritative display in the 2000 metres race reserved for 3-year-old Purebred Arabians at the QREC-sponsored Gr1 PA Al Rayyan Cup (Prix Kesberoy) at Deauville in France on Tuesday. Khalifa bin Mohammed Al Attiyah, QREC Board Member, presented the trophies to the winners while Mohammed bin Hamad bin Ali Al Attiyah and Ali bin Hamad bin Ali Al Attiyah received the Cup. The bay colt, trained by Francois Rohaut, ridden by Maxime Guyon, and owned-and-bred by Al Wasmiyah Racing, is now unbeaten in three career starts, having made a winning debut at Bordeaux before capturing the Gr.2 (PA) Qatar Coupe de France des Chevaux Arabes at La Teste in June. Faced with a small, but select field of five runners, Laffan stepped up in both trip and class and confirmed his place among the elite of his generation with a determined performance. After a good start, Laffan settled in second behind Amjaad (Azadi) in the early stages before taking over the lead just before the back straight. He then steadied the pace, with the favourite Romeo AT (Af Al Buraq) racing keenly in fourth behind Subahiyah (Mahabb) while the sole unraced colt of the field brought up the rear. With the tempo remaining moderate until the final bend, Laffan was the first to make a move, quickening smartly off the turn to open up a two-length advantage. Subahiyah gave chase from second while Romeo AT had plenty to do, but began a wide, determined run down the outside. Inside the final 200 metres, Laffan was still in front as his rivals closed in, but the colt showed great tenacity to cling on, holding off the favourite by a short head. Romeo AT had to settle for second, with Subahiyah close up in third. The winning trainer, said,'He was the only one who didn't pull. Being in front, he relaxed well and breathed easily. Subahiyah pulled a little, Roméo At pulled a lot. It's good. He deserved to win his race today. He was the one who deserved it the most out of the three. He won it. That's great. It shows that he's truly a good horse. Now, we'll head calmly to Saint-Cloud without any pressure. What he did today was beautiful. I'm really happy. He's a classy colt with very nice owners. We make a great team.' Bred by Al Wasmiyah Racing, Laffan is out of Ajaayib (Mahabb), a winner over 1650 metres at three and 1500 metres at four. Ajaayib is a half-sister to Moshrif (Dahess), a dual Gr.1 (PA) winner over 2000m and 2200m, and to Muraaqib(Munjiz), a five-time Gr.1 (PA) winner from 1600m to 2000m between the ages of three and six.
