Rupee strengthens 11 paise to close at 85.68 against US dollar as RBI surprises with jumbo rate cut

Moreover, a surge in the domestic markets supported the rupee at lower levels with both the indices settling with gains of over 1 per cent. Forex traders said the rupee traded on a flat-to-positive note as the RBI surprised the market with a jumbo rate cut. Besides, the rate cut supported by a phased 100 basis points CRR reduction will lower the borrowing costs and boost growth. Mumbai, Jun 6 (PTI) The rupee pared initial losses and appreciated 11 paise to close at 85.68 against the US dollar on Friday, after the Reserve Bank cut repo rate by a higher-than-expected 50 basis points to prop up growth. At the interbank foreign exchange, the domestic unit witnessed heavy volatility. It opened at 85.91, registering a fall of 12 paise over its previous close. But soon pared the losses and saw an early high of 85.66 against the greenback. During Friday's trade, the rupee also saw an intra-day low of 86 and finally settled for the day at 85.68, up 11 paise over its previous close. Dilip Parmar, Senior Research Analyst, HDFC Securities, said, 'The rupee led the pack among Asian currencies, buoyed by the RBI's surprise 50 basis point rate cut. This decisive, growth-driven policy move provided a significant boost to the local currency and fuelled optimism among domestic equity investors.' However, a resurgent dollar index and weakening regional currencies could cap further gains for the rupee, he said. 'From a technical perspective, USD-INR finds support at 85.20 and faces resistance at 86.10.' On Thursday, the rupee snapped its two-day losing streak and closed 8 paise higher at 85.79 against the US dollar. The RBI slashed interest rate by 50 basis points on Friday, a third consecutive reduction, and unexpectedly reduced the cash reserve ratio (CRR) for banks to provide a major liquidity fillip to support the economy amid geopolitical and tariff headwinds. The central bank retained GDP growth projection for the current fiscal at 6.5 per cent. It also changed its monetary policy stance to 'neutral' from 'accommodative', with Malhotra saying further action will depend on incoming data. 'The RBI policy decision was pre-emptive and precise. The surprise CRR cut of 100bps despite a significantly high surplus liquidity signals a strong intent to fast-track transmission while the change in stance back to neutral reflects possible pause on future rate cuts,' Anurag Mittal, Head of Fixed Income at UTI AMC, said. Meanwhile, the dollar index, which gauges the greenback's strength against a basket of six currencies, was trading higher by 0.25 per cent at 98.98. Brent crude, the global oil benchmark, fell 0.26 per cent to USD 65.17 per barrel in futures trade. 'Any further rate cut by the RBI may also pressurise the rupee. However, a positive tone in the domestic markets may support the domestic currency at lower levels. Investors may now focus on the non-farm payrolls report from the US. USD-INR spot price is expected to trade in a range of 85.40 to 86.25,' said Anuj Choudhary – Research Analyst at Mirae Asset Sharekhan. On the domestic equity market front, the 30-share benchmark index Sensex recovered the initial lost ground and closed 746.95 points, or 0.92 per cent higher at 82,188.99, while the Nifty settled 252.15 points or 1.02 per cent up at 25,003.05. Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) purchased equities worth Rs 1,009.71 crore on a net basis on Friday, according to exchange data. Delhi CM forms Transgender Welfare and Empowerment Board

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Saturday announced the formation of the Transgender Welfare and Empowerment Board to address the grievances of the community. The Board will help the transgender community receive their rightful entitlements in education, healthcare, employment, and safety, Gupta said in a statement. Stating that the Board will work on policymaking and recommending welfare schemes, the chief minister added that it will also coordinate with various departments to solve issues regarding the transgender community. This development will also ensure the timely issuance of identity certificates and ID cards. Now, transgenders will be able to self-declare their gender identity and obtain identity documents from the District Magistrate, the statement said. The chief minister further emphasised that this is not just a legal formality but a reflection of the government's deep commitment to providing dignity, rights, and opportunities to the transgender community. The Delhi government is planning new initiatives to ensure a dignified life for the transgender community, including construction of dedicated third-gender toilets in government buildings, hospital wards and gender-specific health services in government hospitals, she said. A transparent online process for issuing ID cards, sensitisation and awareness campaigns in educational institutions and workplaces, temporary shelters, employment training and social security schemes tailored to the community, are also being planned by the government. Reaffirming her government's commitment to developing a Delhi that stands for equality, respect, and inclusion, Gupta said this decision reaffirms the values of equality and justice in the Indian Constitution. She also called the development 'revolutionary' as it will bring the transgender community into the mainstream.

These 5 countries are urging people to have more children due to..., countries are...

(Image: New Delhi: Many big powers of the world are now worried not due to population growth, but due to population decline. Where once population explosion was considered a crisis, now many countries are facing serious crises like aging population and lack of manpower due to low fertility rate. Here we are sharing with you the names of world's top 5 countries that are going through population crisis. Turkey: Turkey's birth rate in 2001 was 2.38 which has fallen to 1.48 in 2025. This figure is even lower than France, Britain and America. President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has called it a 'bigger threat than war' and has declared 2025 as the year of family and announced to start the decade of family from 2026. Efforts are being made to give economic incentives to new couples. Vietnam: Vietnam has ended the decades-old two-child policy. Now people can have as many children as they want. From 1999 to 2022, the average birth rate was 2.1, but in 2024 it fell to 1.91. The same trend is seen in other Asian countries like Japan, South Korea, Taiwan and Singapore, but their economies are much stronger than Vietnam hence, Vietnam is trying to create a balance. China: China's population has been declining for three consecutive years. According to the United Nations' estimates, it can decrease from 1.4 billion to 800 million by the end of the century. This is directly affecting the economy due to the low working-age population and increasing pension and healthcare needs. New Zealand: The birth rate in New Zealand reached a record low of 1.56 in 2023. The special thing is that the number of women aged 15 to 49 increased in the country, but the number of children still decreased. In 2022, this rate was 1.66, which is already well below the required rate of 2.1 to maintain the population. These figures clearly show that having children is no longer a priority in the country. North Korea: Even though North Korea does not reveal its population figures, according to the United Nations' estimates, its birth rate is 1.78. This rate is higher than South Korea, Japan and China, but still below the required 2.1. If this trend continues, then there is a danger of a huge shortage of workers and collapse of social structure in the coming years.
