Live Events (You can now subscribe to our (You can now subscribe to our Economic Times WhatsApp channel Guwahati: The first meeting of the High-Level Task Force on the Northeast Economic Corridor (NEEC) was held on Wednesday via video conference under the chairmanship of Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma, who also serves as the Convener of the Task emphasized the significances of the Northeast region in India's economic developmental journey and highlighted the need to enhance regional cooperation with other Asian countries to ensure faster and more inclusive stated that the establishment of the High Level Task Force on NEEC is aimed at assessment of the existing economic, infrastructure and investment ecosystem in the NER, highlighting critical sectors, to formulate strategies to attract public and private sector investment, align the objectives of North East Economic Corridor with the action plan to attain measurable targets for short term, medium term and long term Northeast Economic Corridor under the Ministry of DoNER, is a transformative initiative aimed at enhancing connectivity, trade, and economic growth in the Northeastern Region (NER) of initiative focuses on improving intra-regional connectivity through the development of ports, road networks, airports, railways, digital infrastructure, and power facilities. It also emphasizes the promotion of major sectoral clusters such as sericulture, agarwood, bamboo, rubber, tea, and agriculture, including high-value crops like kiwi and pineapple. By establishing growth and border centres, the NEEC seeks to leverage local potential, assess existing industries, respond to market demand, and identify strategic zones for development—thereby also encouraging Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) into the members of the Task Force include Union Minister of DoNER, Jyotiraditya M. Scindia; Chief Minister of Meghalaya Conrad Sangma, Chief Minister of Assam Himanta Biswa Sarma and Governor of Manipur, Ajay Kumar met with Dr. Randir Singh, Chairman of the Brahmaputra Board , at his office in Aizawl. During the meeting, various ongoing activities of the Board in Mizoram were expressed his appreciation of the Board's efforts and conveyed the State Government's willingness to support the Board's initiatives. He assured that the State would make necessary amendments and align policies as required to facilitate access to the Central Government's flood bank zoning and its related emphasized the importance of cooperation in areas related to increase water sources, watershed development, rainwater harvesting dam and multi-purpose irrigation project, and the need to continue progressing towards a safer and more sustainable riverine system in the explained that the Brahmaputra Board, established in 1982 under the Brahmaputra Board Act, 1980 by the Government of India, is mandated to undertake the integrated development of the Brahmaputra and Barak River basins, particularly in the Northeastern region. The Board's responsibilities include the preparation of Master Plans for flood management and bank erosion control, detailed project reports (DPRs) for multi-purpose development, survey and investigation of river systems, implementation of anti-erosion and drainage development schemes, and coordination among states for sustainable water resource management He highlighted the Board's regional office in Zemabawk, Mizoram, which is currently functioning from a rented private building, and shared an overview of the Board's major initiatives in the state. He also outlined plans to accelerate critical projects and interventions in the coming months.

Mizoram CM Lalduhoma pitches North East Economic Corridor as growth gateway
Aizawl, Apr 23 (UNI) Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma on Wednesday chaired the maiden meeting of the High-Level Task Force on the North East Economic Corridor (NEEC), calling for a unified regional approach to unlock the economic potential of India's North Eastern Region through better infrastructure, sectoral development and cross-border cooperation. Held virtually, the meeting brought together top leaders including Union DoNER Minister Jyotiraditya M. Scindia, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma and Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla. As Convener of the Task Force, Lalduhoma stressed the importance of aligning the NEEC with national development goals, while pursuing investment-friendly strategies and regional synergy with Asian neighbours. He said the newly formed Task Force is designed to evaluate the existing infrastructure, assess industrial opportunities and create a roadmap for attracting private and public investment in the region. 'This is not just about economic development—it's about building a self-reliant North East that plays a central role in India's growth,' he said. The North East Economic Corridor, under the Ministry of DoNER, aims to transform the region into an integrated economic zone through connectivity upgrades across roads, railways, airports, digital networks, and power infrastructure. The plan includes promoting cluster-based industries in bamboo, rubber, agarwood, tea, sericulture, and high-value crops like kiwi and pineapple. The NEEC also envisions the creation of growth centres and border hubs, intended to boost trade, stimulate local enterprises, and encourage Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in key zones tailored to market demands. Lalduhoma was joined in Aizawl by Chief Secretary Khilli Ram Meena; Commissioner of Planning Vanlaldina Fanai; Planning Secretary Lalmalsawma Pachuau; and senior government officials. DoNER Minister stresses on multimodal connectivity within NE region, across border
New Delhi/Aizawl: Union Minister for Development of the North Eastern Region (DoNER) Jyotiraditya Scindia on Wednesday reaffirmed the need to strengthen critical infrastructure to enhance multimodal connectivity within the northeastern region and across international borders. Participating in a high-level 'North-East Economic Corridor (NEEC)' task force virtual meeting, the DoNER minister also highlighted the importance of developing trade infrastructure in border areas to position northeast India as a vibrant hub for commerce and industry. The first ever meeting of the High Level Task Force on the North East Economic Corridor (NEEC) was held in virtual mode on Wednesday under the chairmanship of Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma, who also serves as the Convener of the Task Force on NEEC. Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma and senior officials from Manipur and Assam governments attended the virtual meeting from their respective state capitals. Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma emphasised the significance of the northeast region in India's economic developmental journey and highlighted the need to enhance regional cooperation with other Asian countries to ensure faster and more inclusive growth. According to an official statement of the Mizoram government, the NEEC under the Ministry of DoNER, is a transformative initiative aimed at enhancing connectivity, trade, and economic growth in the North Eastern Region (NER) of India. The initiative focuses on improving intra-regional connectivity through the development of ports, road networks, airports, railways, digital infrastructure, and power facilities. It also emphasises the promotion of major sectoral clusters such as sericulture, agarwood, bamboo, rubber, tea, and agriculture, including high-value crops like kiwi and pineapple. By establishing growth and border centres, the NEEC seeks to leverage local potential, assess existing industries, respond to market demand, and identify strategic zones for development, thereby also encouraging Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) into the NER. Mizoram Chief Minister was accompanied by state Chief Secretary Khilli Ram Meena and other senior officials. The Ministry of DoNER has earlier constituted several High Level Task Forces (HLTFs) on various sectors with Chief Ministers of the northeastern states as members. The HLTFs were constituted following the 72nd plenary session of the North Eastern Council (NEC) held in November last year at Agartala, Tripura. Union Home Minister Amit Shah, who is the chairman of the NEC, chaired the NEC plenary session.
