Mizoram CM Lalduhoma pitches North East Economic Corridor as growth gateway
Aizawl, Apr 23 (UNI) Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma on Wednesday chaired the maiden meeting of the High-Level Task Force on the North East Economic Corridor (NEEC), calling for a unified regional approach to unlock the economic potential of India's North Eastern Region through better infrastructure, sectoral development and cross-border cooperation.
Held virtually, the meeting brought together top leaders including Union DoNER Minister Jyotiraditya M. Scindia, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma and Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla. As Convener of the Task Force, Lalduhoma stressed the importance of aligning the NEEC with national development goals, while pursuing investment-friendly strategies and regional synergy with Asian neighbours.
He said the newly formed Task Force is designed to evaluate the existing infrastructure, assess industrial opportunities and create a roadmap for attracting private and public investment in the region. 'This is not just about economic development—it's about building a self-reliant North East that plays a central role in India's growth,' he said.
The North East Economic Corridor, under the Ministry of DoNER, aims to transform the region into an integrated economic zone through connectivity upgrades across roads, railways, airports, digital networks, and power infrastructure. The plan includes promoting cluster-based industries in bamboo, rubber, agarwood, tea, sericulture, and high-value crops like kiwi and pineapple.
The NEEC also envisions the creation of growth centres and border hubs, intended to boost trade, stimulate local enterprises, and encourage Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in key zones tailored to market demands.
Lalduhoma was joined in Aizawl by Chief Secretary Khilli Ram Meena; Commissioner of Planning Vanlaldina Fanai; Planning Secretary Lalmalsawma Pachuau; and senior government officials. The Chief Secretary later delivered the vote of thanks, marking the close of what was seen as a strategic step forward in realising the region's long-standing economic aspirations. UNI ZS SSP

Bandi Sanjay inaugurates road Works worth Rs 31.12 crore in Karimnagar
Karimnagar, June 7 (UNI) Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Bandi Sanjay Kumar asserted that the Narendra Modi-led Central Government is giving top priority to road construction and infrastructure development across the country. He said that the Karimnagar Parliament constituency is witnessing significant internal road development under the National Employment Guarantee Scheme, with works worth Rs 31.12 crore currently underway. The Union Minister inaugurated a newly constructed internal road in Qazipur village of Kothapalli mandal on Saturday. The road, completed under the Employment Guarantee Scheme, was built for Rs14 lakh. He later laid the foundation stone for a market shed in Asif Nagar, Kothapalli Mandal, which is being taken up with Rs 9.50 lakh from the MP Local Area Development (MPLADS) funds. Speaking at the event, Bandi Sanjay said, 'This year alone, Rs 74 lakh has been allocated for road construction in Kothapalli Mandal. I am pleased to inaugurate this road in Ghazipur, which is part of a broader initiative to enhance rural connectivity under the employment scheme.' Highlighting the Centre's extensive efforts in road infrastructure, he informed that under the Central Road Infrastructure Fund (CRIF), Rs 291 crore has been spent in the Karimnagar Parliamentary segment, resulting in the construction of 1,341 km of roads. Additionally, hundreds of crores have been utilized under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) to build roads in remote villages. He noted that nearly Rs 5,000 crore has been spent on National Highway works in Karimnagar Parliament. 'Highway projects between Karimnagar-Warangal and Siddipet-Elkathurthi are progressing rapidly. We are also set to begin construction of the Karimnagar-Jagityala highway very soon,' he added. Referring to the Rajiv Gandhi Highway, he said the Central Government is ready to widen it using National Highway funds. However, he pointed out that the road is currently under a state-level maintenance contract. 'If the state government resolves the issue with the existing contractor and submits proposals, we are prepared to take up the widening project without delay,' he assured. UNI VV BD

Elon Musk suggests forming his own political party after Trump feud
Austin, June 7 (UNI) After his falling out with US President Donald Trump over the 'One Big Beautiful Bill', SpaceX and Tesla CEO Elon Musk has now suggested forming his own political party, potentially further straining his ties with Trump. The multi-billionaire first floated the idea on Thursday on X/Twitter, while taking pot shots at the US President. Musk posted a poll on his account asking his 220 million followers if they think it's "time to create a new political party in America that actually represents the 80% in the middle." Surprisingly, over 80% agreed with the poll. "The public has spoken. A new political party is needed in America to represent the 80% in the middle! And exactly 80% of people agree. This is fate," he wrote, on Friday evening. Musk then endorsed a fan's suggestion that he name it the "America Party". The name bears a resemblance to America PAC (Political Action Committee), the political action committee founded by Musk last year that was his main vehicle for spending $239 million to help elect Trump and other Republican candidates in 2024, CBS News reported. However, forming a political party in the US is easier said than done, as the country's two major parties, the Democratic and the Republican party, along with several other big third parties such as the Libertarian, Constitution, and Alliance parties have made inroads into several major towns, municipalities, and cities, and have ballot access in every state. Even with Musk's enormous wealth, it is a very difficult task, and currently he is at the crossroads with his Republican allies, still musing on how to part from them – if he ever even will. Musk offered a pointed suggestion Thursday afternoon to congressional Republicans who may be unsure of whether to side with him or the president, writing on X: "Trump has 3.5 years left as President, but I will be around for 40+ years."
