Kolkata: Falguni Dey, the geography professor from Kolkata, who was on an expedition mission but got stuck in Tehran, has managed to escape the city unharmed but is now stranded at Astara — the border area of Iran and Azerbaijan.
Dey, who spent sleepless nights amid missile attacks over the past week, is desperately trying to get a migration code to cross the border from Astara, where hundreds of foreign nationals have crowded.
On Wednesday, Dey made several attempts through his friends in India to find out the status of his application with the Azerbaijan authorities. He had filed an application with Azerbaijan for permission to cross the border, apart from an e-visa, even before he left Tehran for the Astara border.
"Every time I open the phone hoping for the mail from the Azerbaijan authorities, I am disappointed each time. There are hundreds of foreign nationals who escaped Tehran and gathered at Astara.
," Dey said.
Over the past week, Dey's life took dramatic turns. After his failed attempt at Mount Damavand owing to bad weather conditions and a blizzard, he came back to Tehran. The day before his scheduled departure, Israel launched attacks on Iran, leaving the country's airspace closed for an indefinite period.

While he stayed at the hotel in Tehran for three days, Dey realised that he had to move out of the city. On Monday, he made a desperate attempt and took a 1,000 km journey to reach Astara after travelling for nearly 40 hours.
On the road, he spent the night on the floor of a mosque, woke up intermittently at the loud noise of explosions nearby, and kept hoping for a safe journey.
He reached Astara a little after Tuesday midnight.
Little did he know what was in store for him. "I spent whatever I had to reach Astara. When I arrived, I found there are lobbies where people are sleeping. All of them escaped the nightmare in Tehran. I found a place for myself in a corner. I was feeling hungry and started looking for food. The security personnel manning the building were generous enough to share food and water with me," he recounted.
In the morning, he woke up to see hundreds of evacuees queueing up in front of the building.
"This is where they process the exit formalities of the foreign nationals. I looked at their anxious faces and realised what they have been going through," he told TOI over phone.
Meanwhile, Dey came to know that a number of Indians were also moving towards the Iran-Armenia border. The ministry of external affairs already mentioned that "some Indians have already been facilitated to leave Iran through the border of Armenia." But Dey is left with no choice at present as he is facing a severe cash crunch. "Since the banks are closed, I cannot withdraw any money. Armenia is around a 10-hour drive from here, and I don't have the resources to reach there.
At times, I feel depressed. I just want to go back home now," he said.

Iraq's top Shiite cleric warns against any targeting of Iran's leadership

Iraq's top Shiite cleric Grand Ayatollah Ali Sistani warned against targeting Iran's leadership and said that the Iran-Israel war could plunge the whole region into chaos. Sistani said in a statement Thursday that any targeting of Iran's "supreme religious and political leadership" would have "dire consequences on the region". He warned that it could spark "widespread chaos that would exacerbate the suffering of its (the region's) people and severely harm everyone's interests". by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Esta nueva alarma con cámara es casi regalada en Los Andes (ver precio) Verisure Alarmas Undo Sistani urged the international community to "make every effort to end this unjust war and find a peaceful solution" to Iran's nuclear programme. Sistani, an Iranian, is the highest religious authority for millions of Shiite Muslims in Iraq and around the world, with the power to mobilise a huge portion of that base in Iraq. Live Events With warnings of all-out regional war intensifying following Israel's surprise assault on Iran last week, fears are growing over an intervention by Iran-backed Iraqi factions, mostly against American interests in the region. Despite his Iranian roots, Sistani is seen as an essential figure in Iraq's recent history and has been known for pushing back against Tehran's growing clout in the country. Israel launched a devastating surprise attack on Friday targeting Iran's military and nuclear sites and killing top commanders and scientists, saying it is acting to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon, an ambition Tehran denies. The assault has prompted Iran to retaliate with barrages of missiles on Israel. Earlier this week, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu did not rule out plans to assassinate Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei , saying it would "end the conflict". US President Donald Trump had earlier said his country would not kill Khamenei "for now", but demanded Tehran's "unconditional surrender". Khamenei rejected Trump's demand, as the US president warned he was weighing military action in the conflict. Shiite Muslim clerics rallied late Wednesday, wearing military fatigues in southern Iraq, near the Iranian border. They held Iraqi and Iranian flags and shouted slogans condemning Israel's attack. In Lebanon, Iran-backed militant group Hezbollah warned against threatening Khamenei, describing it as "an act of recklessness and foolishness" that would have "grave consequences". It "constitutes an offence to hundreds of millions of believers", added the group, which suffered heavy blows in its latest confrontation with Israel last year.

Andhra Pradesh drive: Govt schemes for tribals; health, housing, pensions explained

NUZVID: Mandal Parishad Development Officer (MPDO) Chenna Raghavendranath said that people should avail themselves of all the govt schemes and programmes. He mentioned that state and central govts were implementing several welfare programmes, particularly for the upliftment of the tribals and socially backward classes. A village-level awareness programme was held as part of the Pradhan Mantri Janjati Adivasi Nyaya Maha Abhiyan (PM-JANMAN) at Ongili Thanda on Wednesday. Speaking on the occasion, Raghavendranath stated that the objective of this programme was to raise awareness about govt welfare schemes in tribal areas and deliver necessary services directly to the people. 'Services such as health checkups, education opportunities, healthcare, nutrition support, pension eligibility verifications, and information on newly introduced govt schemes will be provided by the govt. This programme is especially focused on the welfare of Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTGs) through the involvement of various departments,' said Raghavendranath. He mentioned that Prime Minister Narendra Modi, chief minister Chandrababu Naidu, deputy chief minister Pawan Kalyan, and housing minister Parthasaradhi were very keen on ensuring that the administration reached out to the PVTGs to extend the benefits of the govt schemes. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch CFD với công nghệ và tốc độ tốt hơn IC Markets Tìm hiểu thêm Undo He explained that Dharti Aaba Abhiyan is a special national campaign launched by the Centre for the holistic development of tribal villages. It is named in honour of Birsa Munda, a revered tribal freedom fighter and reformer. 'The scheme ensures saturation of govt schemes in tribal villages. It will improve access to healthcare, education, employment, pensions, housing, and other essential services. It will also bring remote and backward tribal areas into the path of sustainable development,' said Raghavendranath. He stated that they would verify whether the schemes, including PM Awas Yojana for housing, Ayushman Bharat, PM Kisan, Ujjwala Yojana, and MGNREGA, were extended to all the eligible people. A large number of villagers actively participated and availed themselves of services and guidance. Local public representatives, teachers, ASHA workers, anganwadi workers, village elders, women's group members, students, and youth took part enthusiastically in the event. Officials from health, panchayat raj, education, agriculture, irrigation, and other departments delivered services and interacted with the public. Field-level reviews were also conducted to assess the implementation of welfare programmes in the tribal village, and suitable suggestions were offered.

'Leave If You Feel Unsafe': India Urges Citizens To Consider Voluntary Exit From Israel, Issues Helpline

The Indian Embassy in Tel Aviv has not ordered a mandatory evacuation, but has 'strongly urged' Indian nationals to voluntarily depart if they feel insecure. Amid growing fears of a potential military escalation between Israel and Iran, India has advised its citizens in Israel to consider leaving the country if they feel unsafe, top government sources have told CNN-News18. This advisory comes in the wake of a similar security warning issued by the United States to its nationals, raising concerns over the regional conflict intensifying. According to sources familiar with the matter, the Indian Embassy in Tel Aviv has not ordered a mandatory evacuation, but has 'strongly urged" Indian nationals to voluntarily depart if they feel insecure. Approximately 40,000 Indians currently reside in Israel, and the embassy has prepared a comprehensive database to assist and coordinate any evacuation efforts. To ensure efficient communication, all Indian nationals have been requested to register with the embassy via its official portal ( This will allow them to receive real-time alerts and emergency support. The embassy has also activated 24/7 emergency helplines for assistance: +972-3-5226748 (emergency) and +972-3-7620700 (general enquiries). Unlike the government-led evacuation from Iran – where Indian citizens were flown out via Armenia — the current plan for Israel is voluntary, land-based, and coordinated with the support of the embassy. Indian citizens are being advised to exit the country using two key land routes: Via Jordan: Indians can exit through the Allenby Bridge or King Hussein Bridge crossings. However, this requires obtaining an eVisa through Jordan's Interior Ministry portal. For those who choose to remain in Israel, the embassy has shared a set of safety guidelines. These include avoiding non-essential travel, staying close to bomb shelters, and closely monitoring alerts issued by the Israeli Home Front Command through its website ( Prime Minister Narendra Modi has reportedly conveyed India's deep concern over the tensions and reaffirmed India's support for peace and stability in the region during discussions with Israeli leadership. In view of the situation, Indian nationals in Israel are being urged to remain alert, stay informed through embassy updates, and proactively plan their exit routes if concerned about their safety.
