
Kyrgyz filmmaker Dastan Zhapar on his first independent work Deal at the Border
Kyrgyz filmmaker Dastan Zhapar's work is a profound meditation on his society's shifting relationship with the past and the evolving landscape of Kyrgyzstan's traditions. At the heart of his cinematic exploration is death, through which he examines societal ruptures and continuities, and reimagines a future.
Kyrgyz society, like other societies previously part of the Soviet Union, has had to deal with three traditions — pre-Soviet, Soviet socialist, and contemporary.
Dastan made A Father's Will in 2016 and Road to Eden in 2020, both in collaboration with fellow filmmaker Bakyt Mukul. A Father's Will won the Golden Zenith at the 40th Montreal World Film Festival. Deal at the Border, screened at the recent Bangalore International Film Festival, is Zhapar's first independent work.
While A Father's Will was about how reviving an old death ritual helped pacify people defrauded by a man now deceased, Road to Eden reflected on the loss of meaning caused by material compulsions of modern life. With Deal at the Border, Dastan turns to even darker realities — modern slavery and human rights issues. Death here becomes a moment of moral reckoning.
As an amorphous repository of attitudes, practices, and relational hierarchies, a tradition never truly dies. In Dastan's films, two traditions reside within the present — struggling for attention and validation. The resonances of this exploration are impossible to miss in India, bogged down by a similar contest between putative traditions.
In an exclusive, Dastan shares his thoughts on the many issues of idea, ideology and creative expression. Excerpts:
Why is it that you question some traditions and try to restore respect for others?
It is true that I am questioning some traditions, but I am not seeking to restore respect for others. Things emerge in the process of scripting and filming. They beg to be projected on the screen and I am persuaded by this kind of insight.
Death and how people respond to it seems to be a common theme in all your films.
That is right. However, it was not by conscious design — it turned out that way. Death occupied centrestage and spliced three of my films into an unintended trilogy. However, the ideas I am now working on are about survival and the desire for freedom.
A Father's Will plays out an aspect of the Kyrgyz attitude to death. People at a burial desire closure. They want to accept and forgive. Also, they like to ask what kind of a person the deceased was as a prelude to restoring dignity to the dead. These rituals serve to unite people, especially family, in times of sorrow.
Why is the yurt (a portable, circular dwelling, traditionally used by nomadic people in Central Asia) so important?
The Kyrgyz had a nomadic, mobile way of life. The yurt naturally became home and a symbol of family stability. It also represents the strength of the national collective, serving a material function and as a spiritual metaphor.
A Father's Will turns out to be based on a book written by a character in The Road to Eden…
When Bakyt Mukul and I wrote the script for A Father's Will, we thought it would be nice to have a literary work associated with the film's story. When we were scripting for The Road to Eden, and came up with the image of the sick writer Sapar, we thought he could write, for example, a book titled The Father's Testament referring to our previous film. In this way, we would have an imaginary author for an imaginary book on which our first film had been based. In this fashion, we were able to thematically unite the two films. The stories take place in the same universe, same ethical ecosystem.
What is your next film about?
I am actively working on three ideas. One is the story of guards at the border of Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan. Another is about modern slavery.
Why is slavery a subtext of Deal at the Border?
Slavery has been on my mind for a long time as I have been personally affected by it. My brother Aktan was enslaved in a neighbouring country with our uncle. Luckily, they managed to escape. The script was written by Aktan and I.
While writing the script, I studied modern slavery. I learnt that Kyrgyzstan ranks first among Central Asian countries whose citizens are enslaved abroad, mostly in Kazakhstan, Russia, Turkey and the UAE. According to the International Labour Organisation, more than 50 million people are currently enslaved worldwide and 70% of them are women. These statistics are horrifying. We must bring this to the notice of viewers everywhere.
From what sources do you draw inspiration from?
Definitely from the Kyrgyz epic of Manas. It is a poem with more than 1,50,000 verses. It is about the legendary past of many nations of Central Asia, including the Mongol, Kitai, and Altai.
Newspaper reports often provide a starting point for an episode. I am also inspired by themes other directors explore. The most important thing is to select the right theme or story. The story must resonate in you. It must refer to some piece of today's reality or to a possible state of affairs in the future.
I prefer to make films about the rural and remote regions, though cities have their stories too. I ride the bus and observe people as they travel and converse. I can learn much about their troubles and what makes them happy. I dig into real life material so I can use them in my films.
What are your thoughts on Indian cinema?
I am in awe of Indian films screened at international film festivals — they deal with serious issues in interesting ways. I would like to be involved in a joint venture with India sometime in the future. The first Kyrgyz feature film was made in 1958, by which time Indian cinema was already in bloom.
Are you responding to any particular filmmaking tradition?
I like the image of Duishen, the teacher created by Kyrgyz author Chingiz Aitmatov in his novel First Teacher that was later made into a film. Duishen brings knowledge and knowledge is light, pulling millions of people out of the darkness of ignorance. Duishen had a fanatic faith in a bright future ushered in by literacy and education. Eventually that is what led mankind to seemingly impossible things such as space exploration. I believe such people are in short supply in our crazy world today.

Ai Weiwei in Ukraine
Weeks before his new art installation is unveiled in Kyiv, Chinese dissident artist Ai Weiwei visited Ukraine. Photographs posted by him on Instagram show him in Kharkiv, a city in northeast Ukraine. Among others are photographs of a Ukrainian flag billowing in the wind, sunflower fields, local cats and the artist with Ukrainian soldiers. He also met Ukrainian writer, musician and activist Serhiy Zhadan, businessman and Khartia commander Vsevolod Kozhemyako, footballer Andriy Shevchenko and artist Hamlet Zinkovsky. Though Ai Weiwei did not caption his photographs, Russian-Canadian artist-activist Pyotr Verzilov shared his photographs with Ai Weiwei alongside some details of the visit. He wrote, 'The chief artist of modernity, one of the pillars of world culture, the symbol of modern art Ai Weiwei came to us at the frontline in the very heart of the war, on combat positions north of the beautiful city of Kharkiv…. The great Ai Weiwei — smart, cheeky and brave — as the number one cultural figure on Earth should be.' The politically conscious artist and activist, who has often commented on geopolitical and humanitarian concerns through his works and otherwise, will be showing his work at Kyiv's Pavilion 13, a former Soviet-era exposition hall that has now been renovated into a multi-disciplinary arts space. Titled Three Perfectly Proportioned Spheres and Camouflage Uniforms Painted White, its metal structure is made of spherical forms that also comprised another Ai Weiwei work, Divina Proportione (2004–12), which was inspired by Renaissance master Leonardo da Vinci's illustrations for an eponymous book on mathematics, written by Luca Pacioli. Commissioned by Ribbon International, a not-for-profit organisation, according to its social media account, '… the work reflects on Enlightenment ideals of rationality — and how those frameworks are co-opted in a world shaped by conflict and concealment. Speaking about it, Ai Weiwei stated, 'That is the challenge, to build new works relating to what I feel, to me in the past and to the current situation. Art is more metaphysical. You cannot really give every description, but you can always suggest a gesture or attitude or some kind of symbolic meaning, more like a poetic gesture.'

A remarkable revival; celebrating 20 years of Dastangoi
In 2025, the world commemorates an extraordinary milestone, the 20th anniversary of the modern revival of Dastangoi, the centuries-old art of Urdu storytelling. Once presumed extinct after fading from the cultural landscape in the 1920s, this lyrical performance tradition has not only been brought back from oblivion, it has also become a symbol of artistic resilience, cultural memory, and collective imagination. Dastan-e-Mir in performance (Courtesy Dastangoi Collective) The celebrations by the Dastangoi Collective started with a series of festivals hosted at some of India's most iconic theatre spaces, including Prithvi Theatre in Mumbai and the India Habitat Centre in Delhi. The anniversary has become a multifaceted cultural tribute to this extraordinary revival, from curated performances and public lectures, to documentary screenings and global shows. Mahmood Farooqui in Dastan-e-Karn (Courtesy Dastangoi Collective) The modern journey of Dastangoi began in the early 2000s, when Mahmood Farooqui, inspired by the scholarly work of legendary Urdu critic Shamsur Rahman Faruqi, resurrected the tradition. SR Faruqi's multi-volume research on Tilism-e-Hoshruba and Dastan-e-Amir Hamza, texts once woven into the cultural fabric of the subcontinent, served as a vital foundation. Through his erudition, he decoded a forgotten universe of fantasy, intricate prose, and moral complexity that had shaped South Asian storytelling for centuries. In 2005, Mahmood Farooqui, an Oxford trained historian, and filmmaker Anusha Rizvi conceptualised the first modern Dastangoi performance at the India International Centre in New Delhi. This was not merely a re-enactment; it was an artistic reinvention. Farooqui introduced two significant innovations: dual performers instead of the traditional solo narrator, and a fully-designed stage production with lighting, costumes, and structured entrances and exits. He presented a gripping excerpt from the Tilism-e-Hoshruba corpus alongside theatre artist Himanshu Tyagi. The performance captivated audiences, marking not just a return, but a rebirth. For his pioneering efforts in reviving Dastangoi, Mahmood Farooqui was conferred the Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar by the Sangeet Natak Akademi. Two decades later, Dastangoi is not a relic but a living, breathing cultural phenomenon. Over 5,000 performances have been staged worldwide in cities like London, New York, Osaka, Dubai and Singapore, as well as in remote villages and towns across India. From the metropolitan halls of the UK to the intimate chaupals and informal stages of rural India, audiences have gathered in awe, drawn by the lyrical elegance of Urdu, the visual richness of descriptions, and the sheer theatricality of storytelling at its finest. Since the revival, the Dastangoi Collective's repertoire has expanded beyond its classical roots. While Tilism-e-Hoshruba remains sacred ground, new dastans have been created to speak to contemporary times. From folktales like Dastan-e-Chouboli and Dastan Raja Vikram Ki to literary masterpieces like Ghare Bhaire and Dastan-e-Ret Samadhi, and searing biographical narratives like Dastan-e-Raj Kapoor, Dastan-e-Gandhi, Dastan-e-Ambedkar, and Mantoiyat, each performance blends tradition with modernity, fantasy with truth. Dastan-e-Karnaz Mahabharata, one of the most celebrated dastans and Dastan Jai Ramji Ki, based on AK Ramanujan's 300 Ramayanas, bring mythological tales into modern sensibilities. Moreover, imaginative artistic tributes like Dastan-e-Raza about the life of the iconic artist Syed Haider Raza, Dastan-e-Naina Devi and works like Dastan-e-Billi, which is a tribute to art historian BN Goswami, offer innovative scholarly celebrations of their work and efforts. What breathes life into these stories are the storytellers, extraordinary performers, each with a unique voice. These include Darain Shahidi, an award-winning journalist and masterful narrator, Rana Pratap Senger, a veteran of Indian Theatre with deep ties to Habib Tanvir's Naya Theatre, Rajesh Kumar, who has worked in award-winning films like Parzania and Kavi, and Poonam Girdhani, a theatre and radio artist of rare depth and versatility, amongst many more. Many in the Collective have also, over the years, been trained to become writers and scholars. Ainee Farooqui, now a PhD scholar at Princeton University, has authored powerful dastans like Dastan-e-Jallian (on the Jallianwala Bagh massacre) and Dastan-e-Bhagat Singh. Poonam Girdhani has written a dastan on Babasaheb Ambedkar and Dastan-e-Irrfan-e-Buddha. Namita Singhal has crafted a moving narrative on Jawaharlal Nehru, evoking the spirit of pre- and post-Independence India. Meera Rizvi has penned a dastan on celebrated feminist icons, Fahmida Riaz, bringing ideas like gender, women's agency, and freedom of thought and expression to the stage. Equally inspiring is the Collective's commitment to introducing the art to children. Farooqui's Dastan Alice Ki and Dastan Little Prince Ki, and Girdhani's Haroun Ki, adapted from Salman Rushdie's Haroun and the Sea of Stories, have enthralled young minds. These performances are not mere simplifications but carry the same layered narratives and poetic elegance, and they aim to instil in the next generation a deep love for storytelling. Dastangoi's journey has not been easy, from logistical hurdles to navigating the complexities of political discourse. Yet, the Dastangoi Collective remains deeply committed. Their passion is sustained not by commercial rewards but by the emotional connection they cultivate with the audience through the exchange of stories, empathy, and shared humanity. In an age of shrinking attention spans, the willingness of audiences to immerse themselves in hour-long performances is a testament to its enduring magic. To ensure this connection is sustained, the Collective has extended its efforts into educational institutions through workshops and teaching engagements. Institutions such as the National School of Drama, Ashoka University, Jamia Millia Islamia, Delhi University, Punjab University, Christ University, The Doon School, and Woodstock School, amongst others, have all opened their doors to the art. To date, Mahmood Farooqui has trained over two dozen people in the art of Dastangoi, many of whom practice it professionally. I started my Dastangoi journey in 2014. I was then a student at the University of Delhi. I became passionate about learning the art form after watching a Dastangoi performance at the IHC. I approached Mahmood Farooqui who agreed to take me on as a student. He worked on my voice modulation, speech delivery, narration, and stage presence for a couple of years. During that time, I also learnt a new language – Urdu. Finally, the day came when I made my debut at IHC with a tale from Tilism-e-Hoshruba. The same dastan had once captivated me as I sat in the same auditorium as a member of the audience. Today, I have performed over 100 shows across the country. I have also represented India through Dastangoi at international forums, such as the International Bakshi Art Festival in Uzbekistan and performed Dastan-e-Aftaab along with Amina Syeda at the World Expo 2025 in Osaka, Japan. I have conducted several workshops and given Dastangoi lectures at various prestigious educational institutions in the country. At the Ashoka University, Girdhani and I have been teaching an undergraduate course on Dastangoi at the Centre for Performing Arts, inspiring students to perform and think, research, and create for several years now. Mahmood Farooqui is developing a dastan on the life and films of the legendary Guru Dutt and Udit Yadav, a gifted storyteller, is working on a dastan on Kabir. Folktale adaptations and children's dastans are also in the pipeline, continuing the Collective's commitment to innovation and inclusivity. After 20 years, Dastangoi, which was once known as a whisper of the past, is now a roaring, poetic voice that spans continents.
