Naxals should embrace Ambedkarvad, says Athawale

Time of India2 days ago
Kolhapur: Union minister of social justice
Ramdas Athawale
, while speaking in Kolhapur on Tuesday, urged all
naxals
to renounce violence and embrace "Ambedkarvad" — the ideals of Babasaheb Ambedkar.
Athawale, who is also the president of the Republican Party of India (RPI), clarified that the Jan Suraksha Act, passed by the state legislature, is not intended to suppress democratic movements. "Instead its target is violent and undemocratic movements like naxalism. Simply expressing dissent through writing or speaking against the govt would not lead to action under this Act," he said.
"The method of naxals is to backstab.
We were never called naxals when we hit the streets. The way naxals carry out their movement is totally wrong. The govt should not interpret Ambedkarites as naxalites. We are different in ideology and means," he added.
On being asked about the likelihood of Uddhav Thackeray and Raj Thackeray coming together for the Mumbai municipal election, Athawale said, "Now, there are 60% non-Marathis in Mumbai, and they are against Raj. Both Thackerays will get votes only from Marathi people. We will easily defeat them in the election."

‘UAPA in its present form is constitutionally valid': Bombay HC dismisses challenge to validity of law

The Bombay High Court Thursday dismissed a plea challenging the constitutional validity of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), 1967, and the offence of sedition. The high court passed the judgement on the 2021 plea by Anil Baburao Baile, who was issued notice in 2020 in connection with the Elgaar Parishad case. Through advocates Prakash Ambedkar, Nikhil Kamble and Hitendra Gandhi, Baile sought a declaration that the UAPA and Section 124A of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) be declared as ultra vires and unconstitutional. In his plea, Baile also sought the setting aside of the July 10, 2020, notice issued to him by the National Investigation Agency (NIA). 'The UAPA in its present form is constitutionally valid, therefore, the challenge to its vires fails, and the petition is dismissed,' a bench of Justices Ajey S Gadkari and Neela K Gokhale pronounced. 'Mr Ambedkar, you made us think (while deciding this plea),' Justice Gadkari orally remarked. In his plea, Baile also claimed that the UAPA granted 'unbridled power' to the executive to declare an organisation or an individual and their activity unlawful without defining the same in the law. He added that the amendment made in the UAPA to adopt the United Nations Security Council's 2001 resolution, which was for criminalising any person supporting international terrorism, made it possible for the government to declare an Indian citizen or an organisation as a terrorist. 'Nowhere does the Constitution authorise a blanket power to the executive in deciding and Parliament cannot be granted blanket power to declare an organisation as unlawful,' the plea argued. The Central government and NIA opposed the plea, and submitted that various pleas were pending before the high court and the Supreme Court, taking exception to the validity of the UAPA. They also referred to the pending challenge to the constitutional validity of the sedition law under Section 124A of the IPC before the Supreme Court. The detailed verdict will be made available in due course.

Telangana High Court dismisses SC/ST Atrocity case against CM Revanth Reddy

In a significant legal development, the High Court has dismissed the SC and ST atrocity case filed against Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy. The case was opened at the Gachibowli police station following a complaint lodged in 2016 by a man named Peddiraju, who alleged that Reddy and his relatives attempted to encroach on society land. The case, which also included charges against Reddy's brother, Kondal Reddy, and another individual named Lakshmaiah, was initiated under the SC and ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. Revanth Reddy filed a petition in the High Court in 2020, seeking to have the case dismissed. Following a comprehensive hearing on the matter, the court reserved its judgment after concluding arguments from both parties on 20 June. The final ruling was delivered on Thursday, 17 July. In his remarks, the presiding judge stated that investigations revealed Reddy was not present at the scene of the alleged incident and noted a lack of substantial evidence to corroborate the complainant's allegations. Consequently, the court dismissed the case against the Chief Minister.

Revanth says Banakacherla project not discussed, will visit Delhi twice a month to protect Telangana's interests

Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy clarified that the Jal Shakti Ministry itself confirmed there was no discussion on the Banakacherla project during the inter-State meeting on Wednesday (July 16, 2025) where both the Telangana and Andhra Pradesh Chief Ministers participated in the presence of Union Jal Shakthi Minister C.R. Patil. 'How can problems be solved without discussions with the Centre?' questioned Mr. Revanth. 'Even India and Pakistan hold talks on water distribution. What's wrong if I speak to the neighbouring State's CM? This is about the people's interests, not political showmanship,' he said in an informal interaction with reporters in New Delhi on Thursday (July 17, 2025). Taking a swipe at the Bharat Rashtra Samiti (BRS), he said, 'I am not an engineer. Decisions will come after technical studies. People gave me the authority to work with the Central government. Should I go to farmhouse or New Delhi to get the issues resolved?' he asked, taking a jibe at former Chief Minister K. Chandrashekar Rao. He also announced his intent to visit New Delhi twice a month to work in coordination with various Union Ministries, as continuous dialogue with the Centre was essential to protect Telangana's interests, particularly on crucial issues like water sharing. Telangana CM plans to meet Maharashtra CM Mr. Reddy also confirmed plans to meet the Maharashtra Chief Minister on the Tummidihatti project soon. 'When KCR met with Chandrababu and Jaganmohan Reddy, he claimed it as a victory. Now they say it's wrong if I meet them [A.P. leaders]. If I don't attend these meetings, who will present Telangana's case before the Centre?,' he asked. Continuing his attack on the BRS leadership, Mr. Reddy alleged that BRS working president K.T. Rama Rao's close circles were involved in drug abuse. 'KTR's friend Kedar died of a drug overdose in Dubai, and we secured the forensic report to Telangana,' he claimed. The Chief Minister further attacked KTR saying that his sister K. Kavitha was not willing to accept her brother's leadership and has exposed the internal bickering. 'KTR ran away when I challenged him for a debate in the past.' The Chief Minister also questioned the Enforcement Directorate's (ED) inaction, despite evidence, in cases like the sheep distribution scam, Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) irregularities, and the Formula E race. 'The ED has taken the evidence we gathered, yet there is no arrest of KCR, KTR or Harish Rao,' he said, accusing the Union Minister G. Kishan Reddy of not following up with the concerned Ministry. On the ongoing investigations in Telangana, he said investigations against KCR, KTR, and Harish Rao will continue. 'The High Court is looking into the phone-tapping issue,' he said.
