Gonzalo Garcia, a throwback to the classic No.9, a Karim Benzema heir keeping Kylian Mbappe relegated to the bench in Club World Cup
Bursting into the Madrid first team due to the absence of Mbappe in the group stages of the tournament as he was unwell and hospitalised, Garcia has become one of the key aspects of new coach Xabi Alonso's set up in a Los Blancos shirt. The 6ft striker has given Real a get out-of-jail card, playing as a proper No.9, something the club has sorely lacked since the heady days of Karim Benzema. It was also one of the reasons that they were dumped out of the Champions League in the quarterfinals, scoring just once while conceding 5 across 2 legs against Arsenal.
But with Alonso preferring a forward who can work tirelessly on and off the ball, Garcia has fit right into that mould. With the sun beating down mercilessly on the players in an unforgiving US climate, the lanky Spaniard can be seen running endlessly from one end to the other, pressing hard to get the ball while also tracking back to help with the defensive duties, a trait that Vinicius and Mbappe mostly lack.
Garcia has scored 4 times and assisted once in the Club World Cup which might not be enough for him to snag a regular place in the starting lineup in the upcoming season, such is the competition at Real. But it's a start. Alonso has seen something special in the youngster which was why he got the nod to start against Borussia Dortmund in the quarter final over a recuperated Mbappe.

And he reposed the faith of his manager when he scored in just ten minutes, leaping into the air and guiding a through lob by Arda Guler into the Dortmund net. It almost made him look Erling Haaland-esque with the way he finished the move, with every sinew of his body screaming to get a touch of the ball. And when he did reach it, it was pure symphony.
Garcia first came into the limelight when he came off the bench to score a late winner in Real's Copa del Rey match against Leganes, helping the club win 3-2 in the quarterfinal. After the match, he had said that Cristiano Ronaldo and Mbappe were two of his idols. With the goal against Dortmund on Saturday, he became the first Los Blancos player since Ronaldo in 2016 to score four goals in a single edition of the Club World Cup. Not too bad for a player who might have been relegated to the bench had Mbappe not suffered acute gastroenteritis at the start of the tournament.
Garcia has always been a goal scoring machine, netting 25 times in 36 appearances for Real Madrid Castilla, the reserve team of the 15-time Champions League winners. But his work rate is something that has caught the eye of Xabi Alonso.
Operating as a proper No.9 when the ball is inside or near the opposition penalty box, Garcia has a trait that makes him a closer fit to Benzema. While at Real, the Frenchman had an uncanny ability to create room for players like Vinicius, acting as a decoy while dragging defenders away with him. Garcia has that same quality, pressing hard and looking to run in behind the defences while pulling away opponent stoppers with him which gives the other players the space to work with.
With his talent still raw and in need of a little bit of polish, Garcia might not be a regular starter when the La Liga and Champions League comes around in the upcoming season, he will be a pretty valuable player off the bench for Alonso. This will also ultimately bode well for the team in total with Vini and Mbappe afforded enough rest throughout the increasingly gruelling football calendar.
Real have a star on their hands and more importantly, a true-blue No.9, capable of replicating the success of the legendary Raul. But only if nurtured right.

Can Arsenal and Mikel Arteta manage to turn things around this summer?
As Arsenal enters the heart of the transfer window, the summer has taken an unexpectedly calculated turn. Instead of marquee signings up front, early moves have centered around bolstering depth and control in midfield and defence: the arrival of goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga, interest in deep-lying midfielders Martin Zubimendi and Christian Nørgaard, and ongoing talks over Valencia's young centre-back Cristhian Mosquera. That said, sporting director Andrea Berta and the Arsenal hierarchy are quietly shifting focus toward addressing the Gunners' most glaring need, reinforcing the attack. Here's a comprehensive breakdown of how Arsenal is reshaping its squad this summer. The Striker Hunt: Sesko, Gyökeres, or Watkins? Arsenal's top priority is clear: a natural centre-forward who can consistently deliver the goals they have lacked. Sources indicate that two key targets are at the top of their shopping list: Benjamin Sesko (RB Leipzig) A 22-year-old powerhouse who has captured Arteta's attention. His agent was even invited to an Arsenal match to strengthen negotiations. However, talks have hit stumbling blocks: no agreement yet with Leipzig or Sesko, and a change in decision-makers, Berta replacing Edu and Jason Ayto, may have disrupted earlier progress. Viktor Gyökeres (Sporting Lisbon) A 27-year-old centre-forward whose form this season has made him a more visible option. Berta is understood to be pushing hard for Gyökeres, whose keen interest in joining Arsenal could help to overcome contractual hurdles with Sporting. Both targets would likely cost in excess of £70 million, a substantial investment. But Arsenal is showing tactical flexibility: Ollie Watkins (Aston Villa) The 29-year-old England international yanks on the heartstrings of fans and is reportedly open to a move. The fee would be more manageable, affording Arsenal flexibility to strengthen elsewhere. Watkins would also be a childhood club return option, a compelling narrative. Winger Targets & Creative Reinforcements Once a striker is secured, Arsenal will pursue up to two attacking midfielders/wingers to boost their creativity and depth. Rodrygo (Real Madrid) The Brazilian star would be a dream acquisition, explosive and technically brilliant. However, the cost (at least £70 million) and concerns about adapting to the rigours of Premier League football make the deal highly speculative. Anthony Gordon (Newcastle United) The 24-year-old England international is an admired talent, but Newcastle are unlikely to sell, especially with Champions League ambitions keeping them cautious. Eberechi Eze (Crystal Palace) A more realistic target, subject to his £60 million release clause plus add-ons. The 27-year-old midfield dynamo has expressed interest, and Palace could reconsider their stance later in the window. Noni Madueke (Chelsea) An option that some at the club support, given his versatility, though his acquisition is not universally favored within the Arsenal hierarchy. Squad Management: Who Could Leave? To facilitate new arrivals, Arsenal may need to part with existing first-team players: Gabriel Martinelli: The Brazilian winger has attracted interest from abroad, and Arsenal may consider a sale within the next year if his value peaks. William Saliba: Despite being a defensive cornerstone, Real Madrid's interest could open conversations. Arsenal are exploring a new contract but realistically might sell if the right price arrives. Jakub Kiwior and Oleksandr Zinchenko: As primary defenders, they may be moved on or reshuffled depending on defensive improvements. Strategic Summary & The Road Ahead Arsenal's transfer strategy this summer can be summarized as: Strike Up Front: Target high-impact forwards - Sesko, Gyökeres, or Watkins. Creative Balance: Add up to two dynamic attacking midfielders or wingers once the strikehead issue is resolved. Manage Outgoings: Offload players like Martinelli, Zinchenko, or Kiwior to balance books and streamline the squad. Squad Depth & Foundations: Already bolstered defensive and midfield resources with signings like Kepa, Zubimendi, and Mosquera to support long-term growth. The new regime led by Berta is clearly prioritizing structure over hype. With Arteta's desire for flair and balance combined with budget discipline, the Gunners stand poised to build a squad capable of mounting a sustained title challenge, if the summer pieces fall into place.

Watch: Lionel Messi Rolls Back The Years, Leaves 4 Players In The Dust To Score Stunning Solo Goal
Just a couple of weeks after showing his magic at the FIFA Club World Cup, Inter Miami star and Argentina icon Lionel Messi has rolled back the years once again, this time scoring a sensational solo goal in the ongoing Major League Soccer (MLS) season. Messi bagged two goals as Inter Miami defeated Philadelphia Union 4-1, but it was his second that stole the limelight. Having recently turned 38, Messi showed glimpses of his old self, leaving multiple defenders in the dust to score a sublime individual goal. Up 3-1, Messi's individual moment of magic came in the 62nd minute of the contest. Messi received the ball just ahead of the final third from teammate Luis Suarez. What followed was scintillating. Messi made a weaving run, slaloming past as many as four defenders, shrugging off more challenges from behind before slamming it past the goalkeeper and into the back of the net. Watch: Lionel Messi scores stunning individual goal on MLS return Ankara Messi, Ankara Messi, Ankara Messi Ankara Messi, Ankara Messi . — Major League Soccer (@MLS) July 6, 2025 It was vintage Messi - perhaps not with quite the burst of pace that he had in his prime, but enough to still make a mockery of the opposition. The little Argentine twisted right and left, bringing back memories of some of his most incredible solo goals over the years. It was Messi's 12th goal of the MLS season in just 14 matches, leaving him four strikes behind league top-scorer Sam Surridge of Nashville SC. The 38-year-old had recently unprecedentedly led Inter Miami to the Round of 16 of the Club World Cup. Messi had scored an inch-perfect free-kick against Portuguese giants FC Porto to help Inter Miami finish in the top-two of their group. However, they were dumped out of the tournament in the Round of 16 by European champions Paris Saint-Germain (PSG). In the MLS, Inter Miami currently sit sixth in the Eastern Conference, 10 points off the top. However, they have played four matches less than league leaders FC Cincinnati.
