Heartbreak and History in a Single Color

Blue is humanity's favorite color, and no wonder. It's everywhere: the sky, the sea that makes our earth resemble a Big Blue Marble, the internet (That Dress; 'I'm looking for a man in finance/trust fund/6'5'/blue eyes'). It's jeans and velvet and a hundred-year-old, critically contested rhapsody and William Gass's bawdy 1976 'inquiry.'
It is also, as Imani Perry illuminates in a new book that swirls and flicks like an actual marble, a color inextricable from the Black race. Most clearly in the blues, the genre of music that evolved from spirituals and work songs and was quickly seized upon by a growing mass market, 'made of sheets of sound, layered and unstable, that could make you feel much more than words,' as she writes. But in so many other realms of art and life too, often obscured from view.
Reading 'Black in Blues' is like putting on a pair of those special Kodak 3-D viewfinders that make objects and issues leap suddenly into focus. Periwinkle laid on otherwise unmarked graves. The turquoise of lethal menthol cigarette packaging. The background of flags symbolizing freedoms unfairly distributed. The uniforms of Union soldiers and police officers..
Perry is a professor and author of eight other works of nonfiction, including 'South to America,' a genre-bender plumbing national and personal history below the Mason-Dixon line that won the National Book Award in 2022. Though almost 200 pages shorter, 'Black in Blues' ranges even more widely, from the Middle Ages, when the English called dark-skinned people 'blew,' or blue; to the blue-green tiger sharks of the Middle Passage; to the toxic cobalt, mostly from Congo, that powers her computer. Its chapters are tide pools: quite short, but deep and teeming.
Whether by choice or because of deadline constraints, Perry rises above the current political fray, those blue states jutting around the red like an awkwardly fitting jigsaw puzzle. She examines the racist French philosopher Montesquieu's scorn for West African beads, not the bracelets donned by Democratic white women in somewhat hollow solidarity after the election, nor the powdery pantsuits of Kamala Harris.
She shines new light on old familiars, like George Washington Carver, so often reduced in schoolbooks to peanut entrepreneur, who invented a highly coveted formula for Egyptian blue called Oxidation No. 9. She considers both the blue worn by one of the Little Rock Nine students and the bruises suffered by another after she was thrown down the schoolhouse stairs. We revisit Toni Morrison's 'The Bluest Eye' and Miles Davis reclaiming the Blue Period from Picasso.
Perry asserts that her work is intended to be a quilt of sorts, which is very meta. (Yikes, Facebook is also blue.) But behind such beautiful decorative art lurks a lot of ugliness. She spills much ink on indigo, the powerful pigment that came to soak the slave trade, to whose cultivation entire plantations were devoted: 'Brown arms were dyed blue, sometimes permanently, like a tattoo of bondage.'
The fraught background of toile de Jouy, the printed fabric whose scenes long depicted only the white experience, has been well documented; less so that of bouclé, the looped fabric favored by Jackie Kennedy that, the author reveals, was long advertised with a racial slur likening it to Black people's hair. She reminds us that the navy of Brooks Brothers and robin's egg of Tiffany & Company, two leading brands of American prestige retail, both carry moral stain.
She analyzes the familiar sky blue of jasperware, the famous ceramic invented by the white abolitionist Josiah Wedgwood, subject of the 2021 biography 'The Radical Potter,' but also the rarer work of Thomas Commeraw, whose identity as a formerly enslaved person was only recently uncovered.
'One of the remedies we who study Black life have pursued is diligent recovery in the face of being forgotten, obscured or submerged,' she writes. 'We piece together clues and uncover hidden stories.'
There's a biography of Commeraw out there, too, but you won't find it cited in the pages of 'Black in Blues.' Perry writes that the archive on which she draws is too large to cite, which as a fierce Footnote Franny I found one of the few frustrations of a book rightly indignant about erasure. But if you accept her premise, tucked in an aside, that history is a 'term of art for document-based imperial storytelling,' the invitation to choose-your-own-research-adventure makes more sense.
The book drifts, like the ocean; it turns suddenly cloudy, like the heavens; it trills, like the jaybird (to which another chapter is devoted). It will have you looking afresh even at your corner mailbox.

‘We're not monolithic:' Nia Long, Larenz Tate reflect on Love Jones, Black films

Still shots from the film 'Love Jones' displayed on the screens Saturday inside the New World Center in South Beach as scores of people danced to the sounds of Cameo, Strafe and a host of R&B favorites before transitioning into the romcom soundtrack. With sultry sounds of the 'The Sweetest Thing' filling the room, Nia Long and Larenz Tate sauntered into the room, almost floating, with matching white outfits and black shades before the pair essentially picked up where they left off as if we were seeing Darius Lovehall (Tate) and Nina Mosely (Long) continue their story in the iconic film. It was that magnetic chemistry between the two long-time friends that flowed into their conversation with Access Hollywood reporter Scott Evans, discussing their bond, the chemistry behind the iconic film, some of the challenges they faced and the importance of showcasing Black love on screen. 'It's very easy to kiss these lips,' Long said, complimenting co-star Tate, eliciting laughs and cheers from the crowd. The duo's history with ABFF dates back to its inception, when they were honored at the first festival. At that time, as Evans told the audience, ABFF founder Jeff Friday was at Sundance when he saw Love Jones win the Audience Award. 'I remember meeting Jeff, and what I remembered is I hadn't seen anyone so excited about Black films, Black people who wasn't a filmmaker,' Long said, as an image of her at her first ABFF showed. 'It was such a beautiful thing to see.' 'This is a place that nurtures, inspires and loves on us,' she added. RELATED: Larenz Tate comes to Miami to talk about 'Love Jones' But for as much as the film is a cult classic, it was deemed a flop by industry standards, Long underscored, having had a budget of $7 million yet only earning north of $12 million during its original release. It remains the only film from director Theodore Witcher. 'We still had to prove to studios that black love was important,' she said. 'We still had to prove that Black people could come and support us, not in killing each other or in gang violence.' Long said she doesn't knock those films – she and Tate have starred in 'Boyz N The Hood' and 'Menace to Society' respectively – but emphasized 'the core of who we are when we take care of each other is love.' Tate noted the film also didn't have the best marketing and oftentimes decision makers didn't look like them. 'We didn't have a Jeff and Nicole Friday that would understand, because they know us, they know the audience,' he said. 'We didn't have that advantage.' Still, he said, it opened doors for the breadth of Blackness to be shown in films such as 'Soul Food' and 'The Best Man.' 'We're not monolithic,' he said. 'We have a story to tell.' READ: Black Film Festival spotlights Black storytelling with a made-in-Miami film One scene that helps fuel that is when Darius, played by Tate, is speaking with his friend Savon, played by Isaiah Washington, and tells him that Nina could be 'the one.' 'It's an example of Black men being vulnerable,' Tate said. 'You got a chance to see vulnerability from us and you didn't get a chance to see that often.' Perhaps the most palpable experience from the film is the chemistry between the Long, Tate and their co-stars and the desire to stay in the moment to hold the audience's attention. Such was the case when Long got her hair wet at the end of the film against her wishes. 'I didn't want to take the audience out of the moment,' she said. But beyond their on set chemistry, Long said Tate made her feel comfortable on set even after breaking the ice with a kiss during some rehearsal time before they began filming. Long of course obliged him as he went 'whole tongue.' Still, she said Tate made her feel comfortable on set, doting on the gentlemen that he and his brothers, Larron and Lahmard, are. 'For Black women, the most important thing for us is to feel safe,' she said. 'He made me feel safe.' That respect was particularly needed when Nia had to confront a director of photography who spoke to her crudely between takes during an intimate scene with Tate. 'He said, 'Nia, can you move your ass over to the right?'' Long said. She swiftly shot back: ''This is not a…porn,'' Tate recalled. 'Always have empathy for the artist,' Long said. 'Treat the actor with respect and treat the woman with respect.' As for where their characters might be in 2025, Tate said they're soulmates: 'Whether they're together, not together…they haven't forgotten each other.' Long said Nina and Darius have a connectedness: 'You can still live and love each other exactly where you are and you're still connected,' she said. 'And you know, at some point in time you can circle the block and it's still going to be good.'

Beyoncé's global impact felt at London shows: 'I've moved to England because of Beyoncé' Beyoncé's "Cowboy Carter" tour is keeping the momentum going in London, with fans from all over the world continuing to flock to the city to witness the international spectacle. The Grammy-winning singer kicked off her June 14 show at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday. The show marked her fifth of six shows at the stadium on her Cowboy Carter and the Rodeo Chitlin' Circuit Tour. Her last show in London is set for June 16, before she heads to Paris for three nights. And while the first U.K. show debuted over a week ago on June 5, fans continue to travel from across the globe, keeping the excitement alive for each show. 'I've moved to England because of Beyoncé' "I've moved to England because of Beyoncé. That was about 15 years ago," says Patrycja Lesiakowska, who attended multiple shows in London along with her best friend from London, Chichi Mbagwu. Lesiakowska says she became a huge fan back when Beyoncé released her 2006 album "B-Day," and she would go on to listen to that album and all the ones that followed on repeat. "I realized that she never came to Poland, and I needed to see Beyoncé live. I needed to witness it. I had a brother that lived in England. So I took my opportunity to move to England to see Beyoncé during 'Sasha Fierce.' And I signed myself up for college, went to university and stayed in England because I loved it," she says. "And I've seen Beyoncé ever since. But the best thing about it, I've also learned English because of Beyoncé." She says she used Google translate to understand her song lyrics and her interviews when she was 15 years old and would eventually learn the language. 'She taught me English' "So she taught me English. She changed my life. I'm here. I met my best friend. I got a career I wanted," Lesiakowska says. "I live in an amazing country and I have the opportunity to see Beyoncé all the time. But we actually follow her all over the world." Mbagwu and and Lesiakowska met through Beyoncé nearly 15 years ago when they both attended a House of Deréon launch in London and have remained friends since. They've attended her shows together over the years and plan to return to the stadium for her final London concert — their 52nd show together. "I feel honored that I'm able to witness it. I think it's such a huge moment and a huge movement," Mbagwu says. And while "Cowboy Carter" is rich with American history, the impact is profound all over the world. "I think it personally resonates a lot because I think there's been a lot of erasure of Black people," Mbagwu says. "A lot of culture comes from Black people, and I think that's kind of lost down the line in terms of, you know, appropriation. The artistry, the message behind the songs and the way she of invokes her art — it's artwork. Genuinely 'Cowboy Carter' is artwork." 'Attending Beyoncé's tour in London felt significant' Other fans traveled from Australia, Italy, the U.S. and everywhere in between. And it's clear no matter what pocket of the world, Beyoncé's impact and messages have not only been heard but felt. "London is a city that carries such a vibrant energy," says Brendan Thomas, who traveled from West Yorkshire, England, for the show. "It's a cultural melting pot where art, music and people collide in the most inspiring ways. Attending Beyoncé's tour in London felt significant because it's one of those cities where the audience truly matches her energy." He added: "The album feels deeply personal and unapologetic like Beyoncé inviting us into her world while reminding us of our own power. It resonates because it's not just music. It's a statement of freedom, resilience and joy." As fans know, Beyoncé first debuted her "Cowboy Carter" tour at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles on April 28 with 39 songs on the set list. Her tour has been filled with family, fashion, different music genres, and most notably country music and cultural commentary. The June 14 show was no different as she debuted more looks and delivered another high-energy show. The nine-city tour will span the U.S. and Europe with the grand finale taking place in Las Vegas on July 26.
