Bangladesh Polls Announcement Likely In August, Yunus Calls For Unity

NDTV28-07-2025
National elections in Bangladesh are likely to be announced in the first week of August by the country's interim government, according to media reports, with the announcement expected to coincide with the first anniversary of the protests that led to the fall of the Sheikh Hasina-led government.
Chief Adviser of the interim government, Professor Muhammad Yunus, is expected to make the announcement through a national address. Elections to install a government with a political mandate are likely to be held in February next year.
Several political parties in Bangladesh have been pressing for elections, arguing that the interim government lacks a political mandate. Demands for elections by December, however, appear to have been ignored.
Earlier on June 13, Bangladesh Nationalist Party's acting Chairman Tarique Rahman met with Chief Adviser Yunus in London during his official visit to the United Kingdom. In a joint statement following the meeting, Muhammad Yunus had said, "If necessary preparations are completed, the next national election could be held in the week before the beginning of Ramadan in 2026 (early February)."
Notably, pressure has been mounting on Yunus to announce elections, as the country has been without an elected government since the ouster of Sheikh Hasina in August 2024.
The BNP, which is the main political contender following the ban on the Awami League, remains optimistic about the announcement of an election date and timeline.
Bangladesh daily Prothom Alo quoted BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir saying on Monday, "If the Chief Adviser announces the election date within a couple of days, we will be happy-because that's exactly what we have been demanding."
However, Jamaat-e-Islami Bangladesh, a hardline Islamic outfit that has supported Yunus, is reportedly not in favour of announcing an election date at this stage. Critics argue that Yunus has remained in power with the backing of Jamaat-e-Islami. Following the fall of the Hasina government, the ban on Jamaat was lifted, and its registration with the Election Commission was restored, allowing it to contest future elections.
However, Muhammad Yunus has not indicated anything about an election date announcement despite multiple calls to do so. After holding meetings with the political parties on Saturday, he had called for "unity to thwart attempts to disrupt the election."
"If all the forces of the uprising cannot come together to conduct a fair election, this great opportunity will slip through our hands," the Chief Adviser said during a discussion with top leaders of various political parties.
Expressing hope for the cooperation of all political parties to organise a fair election, Muhammad Yunus said, "Whenever we move forward with election preparations, various conspiracies come to light. But the reality is that no conspiracy can obstruct the democratic journey. Because the unity of all democratic forces on the issue of fascism is clear."
Notably, Sheikh Hasina was toppled in a student-led revolution in August 2024 and was charged with crimes against humanity, including incitement, conspiracy, and issuing orders that led to mass killings.

Get Ready To Hold Polls Before Ramadan 2026, Md Yunus' Office Tells EC In Letter

Principal Secretary to the Chief Adviser urged the commission to initiate the required processes to ensure a free, fair & festive national election within the specified timeframe The Office of the Chief Adviser of Bangladesh, Professor Muhammad Yunus, has sent a letter to the Election Commission, requesting that all necessary preparations be completed to hold the national parliamentary election before the start of Ramadan in February 2026. With this letter, the government has formally communicated its request to the Election Commission regarding the conduct of the election. In a letter addressed to the Chief Election Commissioner on Wednesday, Principal Secretary to the Chief Adviser, M Siraj Uddin Miah, urged the commission to initiate the required processes to ensure a free, fair, peaceful, and festive national election within the specified timeframe. On August 5, during his speech to the nation on the occasion of the July Uprising Day, Yunus had stated that a letter would be sent to the Election Commission, requesting the election be held before the start of Ramadan in February next year. Referring to the Chief Adviser's address, the letter notes that he had called for the immediate commencement of all necessary institutional and logistical preparations. Given that citizens have been deprived of their right to vote for the past 15 years, Yunus has emphasised that the upcoming election should be organized as a grand celebration of democracy, making it a joyful and memorable day for all. The letter also recalls the Chief Adviser's vision of the election becoming an unforgettable event—marked by peace, order, high voter turnout, harmony, and sincerity. It underscores the importance of employing appropriate technology in the election process and reaffirms the government's full commitment to supporting the Election Commission in holding a credible, free, peaceful, and festive election. view comments First Published: August 07, 2025, 12:49 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Shama Parveen Ansari, who resided in Bengaluru, was taken into custody by the Gujarat Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) on July 29 for allegedly disseminating extremist ideologies linked to Al-Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent (AQIS), a proscribed terrorist group. Authorities claim that Ansari used her social media platforms to push radical narratives and called for militant actions against India. According to the ATS, Ansari managed two Facebook pages and one Instagram account with a total following of around 10,000. These platforms were reportedly used to circulate violent, anti-national content, including speeches from extremist clerics and propaganda material supporting AQIS ideologies, news agency PTI reported. Following India's launch of Operation Sindoor on May 7 — an anti-terror campaign targeting militant hubs in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir — Ansari publicly urged Pakistan Army chief General Asim Munir to take aggressive military action against India. In a May 9 social media post, she called on Munir to seize what she described as a "golden opportunity" to restore Islamic rule under the banner of "Project Khilafat" and dismantle ideologies like Hindutva and Zionism, the report said. She also reposted content from Lal Masjid cleric Abdul Aziz of Lahore, who called for armed rebellion to bring about an Islamic caliphate in India. A third video posted by Ansari allegedly featured an AQIS leader encouraging violent campaigns against Indian democracy and the Hindu community, invoking the narrative of 'Ghazwa-e-Hind' — a radical concept advocating for the conquest of India. These individuals also allegedly used Instagram to share similar extremist content, the report added. All five have been charged under multiple provisions of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act as the authorities continue their probe into their suspected efforts to incite violence and promote terror-linked narratives within India.
