Chinese Man Loses Rs 1.06 Crore To Gym's 300-Year Membership Scam

Chinese Man Loses Rs 1.06 Crore To Gym's 300-Year Membership Scam

NDTV3 days ago
A Chinese man has filed a lawsuit after a gym duped him out of Rs 1.06 crore (870,000 yuan) for memberships lasting 300 years. The man, identified as Jin, bought the memberships at the gym in the Binjiang District of Hangzhou, where he had been working out for three years, according to a report in South China Morning Post.
"From May 10 to July 9, I bought about 1,200 lessons and membership cards with an accumulative validity period of 300 years, at a total cost of Rs 1.06 crore (871,273 yuan)," Jin said.
In May, one of the sales workers at the gym approached Jin and pitched him a promotional offer that was valid for existing customers.
"After the customers bought a one-year membership card for Rs 1.08 lakh (8,888 yuan), the gym could sell it to new customers for Rs 2.03 lakh (16,666 yuan), an ad for the gym read," the report highlighted.
While Jin was sceptical about the deal, the sales worker ensured it would work out to his benefit, adding that the gym would only keep 10 per cent of the mark-up while the rest would go to the customer.
"He said if they did not sell it within two months, they would return all the money to me," said Jin.
Sales staff vanishes
Swayed by the greed of high returns, Jin caved in and bought two membership cards for over Rs 2.07 lakh (17,000 yuan). Afterwards, the sales staff pressed Jim to buy more membership cards and private tutoring lessons. Convinced yet again, Jin spent over Rs 36 lakh (300,000 yen) on one of the occasions.
Things turned pear-shaped in July when the gym was supposed to return some of the principal. Having not received the money, Jin approached the sales staff, who told him that the transaction was still under review.
By the end of the month, the gym's management and sales staff vanished in thin air, leaving Jin desperate for his money. He later found out that all the contracts he signed with the gym did not mention the returns promised by the sales worker.
"I admit that I have been brainwashed by them, because I believed I was only one small step away from getting back all my money," Jin said.
Quizzed about why he spent so much money, Jin said he loved working out and considered the memberships and lessons as a 'health investment'.
The gym is still open to customers but only the receptionists and administration staff are at work.

Man and brother arrested for stealing gold worth Rs 3 crore from employer

Mumbai: LT Marg police arrested a sales executive Dilip Sampatraj Jain (44) and his brother Vikram Sampatraj Jain (44), for allegedly misappropriating 3.5 kg of gold jewellery worth Rs 3 crore belonging to his employer, a wholesale mangalsutra trader in Kalbadevi. They were produced before court and was remanded to police custody. The complaint involves allegations of systematic fraud between April 2024 and March 2025. According to the complaint, the victim, who operates "Shri Ambika Gold," employed Dilip as a salesman to supply mangalsutras to traders in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. The accused would regularly travel with jewellery stock, sell to traders, and return payments in cash or bank transfers. An audit in March 2025 revealed a shortage of over 3 kg of jewellery. When confronted, Dilip allegedly claimed the items were sold and bills would be issued after April 1. Enquiries with traders revealed no such transactions. Investigations indicate Dilip misappropriated the stock, transferred large sums to Vikram's account. Police seized 1.5 kg of 18-karat gold during the probe. Investigators allege the brothers diverted business funds for personal gains. Mohammed Shami Called 'Womaniser' By Estranged Wife, Accused Of 'Ignoring' Daughter

Indian cricket team fast bowler Mohammed Shami once again found himself in the headlines for the wrong reasons as he was attacked by his estranged wife Hasin Jahan on social media. Jahan alleged that Shami did not want their daughter Ayra to be admitted to a good school. However, she revealed that their daughter secured a place in an international school. Jahan went on to call Shami a 'womaniser' and further alleged that the pacer prioritised the children of his girlfriends and gave them expensive gifts while completely ignoring Ayra and not paying for her school or education. 'The enemies did not want my daughter to get admission in a good school, but Allah foiled their plans, and she has secured admission to a very good international school," she posted on Instagram. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Haseen Jahan (@hasinjahanofficial) 'The father of my daughter, despite being a billionaire, is playing with her life because of womanizing, while educating his mistress's children in elite schools. He spends lakhs on business class flights for some mistresses but claims he has no money for his own daughter's education," she added. Earlier, Jahan said that Calcutta High Court directions to the Indian pacer to pay her and daughter a monthly alimony of Rs 4 lakh as maintenance is a "victory" for her after "a long battle". Calcutta High Court directed Shami to pay a monthly alimony of Rs 4 lakh as maintenance. Jahan will have to be paid Rs 1.50 lakh per month, while the daughter will get Rs 2.50 lakh per month. Jahan, a former model, married Mohammed Shami in 2014. The couple had a daughter in 2015. Mohammed Shami and Hasin Jahan separated in 2018 after she accused him of domestic violence. "I am thankful to God that I finally got victory after fighting such a long battle... Now I will be able to give my daughter a good education and maintain her life easily... If you see the life Shami leads, the status he maintains, his earnings, this amount is nothing in comparison to that... We had demanded Rs 10 lakhs from the court around seven years ago. Since then, Shami's income and inflation have both increased," Hasin Jahan said. "The status with which he leads his life, my daughter and I also have the right to maintain the same status," she added. Jahan's advocate Imtiaz Ahmed confirmed that Shami will be required to pay a monthly alimony of Rs 4 lakh as maintenance to Jahan and said there is a high chance the maintenance might be upgraded to Rs 6 lakh.
