Los Angeles Rioters Trash, Burn Robotaxis
In case you haven't heard, there's been quite a bit of rioting in Los Angeles and Waymo robotaxis have become targets. This isn't the first time we've seen the driverless cars stopped and trashed by angry mobs, although in the past we've only seen it happen with maybe one or two.Instead, this seems to be at least several of the Jaguar I-PACEs bristling with pricey sensors. Now all of that is destroyed to make a political point. We wonder if Waymo will continue to operate in certain areas if this is how its vehicles are treated.

Other vehicles were also graffitied, trashed, and burned in the Los Angeles riots.
One video uploaded to X shows a man smashing the windows of an already graffitied autonomous taxi, using a bike lock to do the damage. Onlookers film the act while other robotaxis burn just a few hundred feet away.

We can only assume that one, after getting tagged and the glass busted out, was destined for a similar, fiery but mostly peaceful fate.
A videographer caught how at least one of the robotaxis was set on fire. One of the rioters put an American flag on the center console, then lit it on fire, we assume to let everyone know how much he hates the United States, taking out the vehicle with it.

There are theories that the rioters hailed the Waymo robotaxis using the app on their phones, then destroyed them. We can't confirm if that's true or if the vehicles just happened to be in the area of the rioting.
What we do know is autonomous cars are often attacked and destroyed in riots. Theories about why that is run the range, from protestors seeing them as symbols of capitalism or the wealthy class.

We're not huge fans of autonomous taxis, but if people want to use them that's their business. Destroying them because you're not getting your way seems like toddler behavior to us.
People are asking why the police aren't stopping this. Well, the Los Angeles Police Department already put out a statement about the riots, saying they 'remained peaceful.' We guess if you ignore the problem, you don't have to solve it.

There was an incident caught on camera of some California Highway Patrol officers caught under an overpass as rioters above pelted their cars and tried to hit officers with rocks, electric scooters, and other items.

One rioter even tried lighting the CHP cruisers on fire from the overpass. So that's where the police are while Waymo loses who knows who many robotaxis, along with all the other damage done to Los Angeles.

It's not clear exactly how much one of these Waymo Jaguar I-PACEs cost the company. Estimates are that on top of the $72,000 MSRP there's about $130,000 to $150,000 in equipment added to the electric cars. Those are estimates, so the amount could be significantly higher, but we would be shocked if it were lower.
In other words, this is costing Waymo or the insurance company covering the robotaxis.

Turkish Adams Donor Sentenced
With help from Amira McKee THE FINAL STRAW? Construction executive Erden Arkan must not have friends in the Trump administration like Mayor Eric Adams does. So while the Department of Justice moved to dismiss the mayor's case, the wheels of justice kept turning for Arkan. The Turkish-American co-owner of KSK Construction Group was given a light sentence of one year probation today in Manhattan federal court. He'll also pay a $9,500 fine and $18,000 in restitution after pleading guilty in January to giving 10 employees $1,250 each to donate to Adams' campaign. But even while accepting that he broke New York City campaign finance laws, Arkan's lawyer Jonathan Rosen presented him as a victim of 'an unprecedented act of prosecutorial discretion,' suggesting that federal prosecutors with the Southern District of New York wanted to salvage some sort of a win following the tumult and rounds of resignations over the dismissal of Adams' case. Rosen also suggested Arkan's case never should have been brought in federal court in the first place, arguing he was 'targeted… to serve some greater end in a bureaucratic power struggle over the Adams case.' While an official from the Turkish consulate helped coordinate Arkan's May 2021 fundraising event for Adams, Rosen said that Arkan 'never had any knowledge of foreign interference' alleged by federal prosecutors. He maintained that neither the Adams campaign nor the Turkish consulate knew about Arkan's straw donor scheme, which he'd cooked up himself. Judge Dale Ho dismissed the arguments. While he conceded 'it is true that there is some incongruency between the government's handling of Mr. Arkan's case and Mayor Adams' case,' he was firm that 'there is not a shred of evidence in the record' indicating that the prosecutors acted wrongly prosecuting Arkan. Another related case hasn't been resolved yet. Former Adams aide Mohamed Bahi pleaded guilty Tuesday to helping to organize a separate straw donor scheme for Adams' 2021 campaign. While Adams himself hasn't been accused of coordinating straw donations, the practice has been a serious problem for his campaign. Adams' old friend Dwayne Montgomery pleaded guilty last year along with other co-conspirators to giving Adams illegal donations, and THE CITY has reported on numerous examples of more apparent straw donations to Adams. Rep. Dan Goldman, a former federal prosecutor, told Playbook earlier this week that this wasn't an ideal outcome for Adams' case. 'As a prosecutor, I never liked when, ultimately, the only people held accountable for their crimes were the lower level people,' he said. 'But under the circumstances, when you've charged someone and there's a legitimate reason to charge that person, the right thing to do is to finish off the case.' — Jeff Coltin From the Capitol LET'S ALL GO TO THE (ASSEMBLY) LOBBY: New York moviegoers might soon have an easier time skipping the increasingly lengthy block of advertisements and trailers shown before the film starts, if a bill introduced this week becomes law. Assemblymember Clyde Vanel wants to require theaters to display the time a movie actually starts when promoting showings or selling tickets. His proposal comes as movies increasingly start as much as half an hour after the advertised time. 'For the consumer, this can have a real monetary and social impact,' he wrote in his memo accompanying the bill. 'Consumers not only may leave obligations earlier than they needed to in order to see the motion picture, but they may also consume their snacks purchased at the theater prior to the movie beginning.' 'There is no justification for deceiving consumers,' he wrote, especially since moviegoers 'cannot bring their own snacks to eat if they consumed their purchased snacks within the extremely long 30-minute preview period.' The bill would not apply to broadcasts of the Assembly session — where starting within half an hour of the scheduled time would be a major improvement. — Bill Mahoney FROM THE CAMPAIGN TRAIL NO 'SHOOK ONES': Queens Borough President Donovan Richards pledged today to help turn out Black voters for Zohran Mamdani in November, evoking both Martin Luther King Jr. and Mobb Deep in his enthusiastic endorsement. The Democratic mayoral nominee's policies — including a rent freeze and free and fast buses — are common sense, not socialism, Richards said in the borough that he and Mamdani both call home. Richmond Hill, Queens was the last stop of Mamdani's 'Five Boroughs Against Trump' tour. 'Count me in as a democratic socialist if it means that everyday New Yorkers will be able to afford this city,' Richards said, adding that civil rights icon King 'was called a socialist and communist as well' and referencing hip-hoppers Mobb Deep by boasting that there are no 'shook ones' in the borough, a reference to the group's hit song. Richards had previewed his endorsement of Mamdani a day earlier. One of Mamdani's biggest weak spots electorally has been politically moderate Black voters in areas like southeast Queens. And while he now has Richards as a surrogate, Queens Democratic Party leader Rep. Greg Meeks has yet to endorse him. (A Meeks spokesperson did not respond today to a query on whether the House member plans to meet with Mamdani.) Mamdani's support in the primary was stronger in parts of the city that are heavily gentrified. Southeast Queens includes neighborhoods that have resisted being priced out. Mamdani acknowledged the critical balance between creating homes for new residents without pushing out longer-term residents. 'One of the many things I appreciate about the borough president is how he has been able to chart a course of building more housing (though) not at the expense of displacing those who already live there,' he said. — Emily Ngo SEX WORK DEBATE: Andrew Cuomo went on the offensive today over Mamdani's past support for state legislation that would decriminalize sex work in New York. The former governor said in a statement that he spent years fighting iterations of the bill over concerns it would lead to an increase in sex trafficking and exploitation of vulnerable New Yorkers. 'Mark my words: This is the real world and if passed, this legislation will open the floodgates,' Cuomo said in the statement. 'Mamdani may not remember the bad old days of New York City, where Times Square was seedy and crime infested and New Yorkers knew which neighborhoods to avoid at all costs. We do, and no one should be eager to return to that era.' Cuomo's stance was backed by Sonia Ossorio, executive director at National Organization for Women New York City. Ossorio has previously criticized Mamdani's position on decriminalization. 'Full decriminalization doesn't protect vulnerable people — it expands a market that thrives on exploitation, human trafficking, and crime in our neighborhoods,' she said in a statement. Mamdani twice co-sponsored a bill that would decriminalize sex work and clear past arrest records related to prostitution while still allowing law enforcement to go after trafficking operations. Campaign spokesperson Dora Pekec declined to say whether Mamdani still supports the concept and whether he would advocate for the legislation from City Hall if elected. But she noted that the Democratic nominee has pledged additional resources to assist victims of prostitution and sex trafficking. 'While Andrew Cuomo is only interested in 'governing' behind a phone screen, Zohran is committed to genuine public safety, including combatting sex trafficking,' Pekec said in a statement that referenced a new department Mamdani plans to create. 'His Department of Community Safety will invest $40 million towards victims services including for programs like Safe Horizon, for which funding has been cut in past budgets.' The issue of whether to decriminalize sex work has been the subject of heated debate over the years. Organizations like DecrimNY, a coalition of sex workers and various organizations aligned with the decriminalization movement, argue the changes would make sex workers safer by allowing them to report violence or unsafe working conditions to authorities without fear of arrest while delivering more autonomy to consenting adults. — Joe Anuta IN THE COURTS CANNABIS REGULATORS SUED AGAIN: A dozen cannabis dispensary licensees are suing the state over a flip-flop on the cannabis agency's interpretation of the state's 2021 legalization law. 'The consequences are staggering. Petitioners' investments, often more than a million dollars, are now at risk' the petition reads. 'Their livelihoods are being threatened.' The petitioners are licensed under the Conditional Adult-use Retail Dispensary (CAURD) and Social and Economic Equity (SEE) licensing programs, which prioritize entrepreneurs with past cannabis convictions, women and minorities. The legal challenge seeks to block regulators from enforcing a new interpretation of school distance requirements in the state's cannabis legalization law, which would force licensees out of their dispensary locations that had been previously approved by the agency. Agency about-face: Earlier this month, the Office of Cannabis Management notified more than 100 licensees that their dispensary locations could be impacted due to the agency's misinterpretation of state law. The licensees are asking the court to annul the agency's new interpretation of the law, declare their locations compliant and block the state from taking any enforcement actions against them over the school distance requirement. A spokesperson for the OCM said that the office does not comment on pending litigation. The agency is proposing a legislative fix that would allow licensees to remain in their locations, but emphasized on its website that passing such legislation 'is not a guarantee.' The state is also creating an $15 million applicant relief fund for up to $250,000 per applicant to help find new locations. — Mona Zhang IN OTHER NEWS —26 FED PLAZA: As fewer immigrants show up for their court hearings, arrests at 26 Federal Plaza's immigration courthouses are nearing a standstill. Law & Order column: Man charged with indecent exposure near Libertyville school
A man was charged with lewd conduct after Libertyville police arrested him this week parked near a school. Victor A. Rodriguez, 31, was charged with two counts of indecent exposure Tuesday, according to Libertyville police. Police said an officer was called at about 8:17 a.m. Tuesday to the 300 block of Rockland Avenue near the Highland Middle School. Police made contact with Rodriguez, who was alone in a parked car. He was taken into custody and brought to the Lake County Jail. At the time of the arrest, school was not in session, police said. Libertyville police issued a media statement this week urging residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious-looking activities or people. 'Your timely reports help ensure the safety and security of our community,' the department said. * The Antioch police are seeking the public's help in identifying the person responsible for graffiti vandalism in the downtown area. Police posted a video on the department's Facebook page this week. On the video, which was time-stamped as being taken around 9 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 10, a person can be seen approaching a structure before tagging the building with black spray paint reading 'Sur 13.' According to internet sources, the Sur 13 refers to a street gang tied to Mexican organized crime. Police are asking people with any information that may assist in this investigation to contact dispatch at (847) 270-9111 to speak with an officer. You may also submit an anonymous tip by emailing crime@ * The Lake County Sheriff's Office said this week that it arrested a Beach Park woman for selling cocaine, including transactions that took place near a Waukegan middle school. Karla L. Rangel-Tirado, 30, of the 37800 block of North Metropolitan Avenue, was charged with delivery of a controlled substance and unlawful possession of a controlled substance. Undercover officers with the Special Investigations Group conducted numerous drug buys from Rangel-Tirado, including two near the Waukegan school. She was arrested Monday during a traffic stop. 'Whether it's a large-scale trafficking operation or an individual dealer targeting our communities, our Special Investigations Group is committed to disrupting the sale of dangerous drugs,' Sheriff John Idleburg said. 'Selling cocaine near a school is especially egregious, and I commend our detectives for their diligent work to keep our neighborhoods safe.' Rangel-Tirado operates a food truck, but none of the drug buys involved the truck, police said. * With most schools reopening now for the start of the academic year, the North Chicago Police Department issued a timely reminder regarding the traffic laws for school buses. If a school bus extends its stop sign on a two-lane road, all vehicles must come to a stop until the stop sign is retracted. On a four-lane road, vehicles travelling in the same direction of the bus must stop when the sign is extended. Oncoming vehicles should exercise caution, though they are not required to stop. This law applies to four-lane roads regardless of whether there is a median dividing the lanes.

Unveiled today (August 15) at The Quail, the unique new model is built as a symbol of individuality, innovation, and American pride, the bespoke LF model becomes the most personal, driver centric, analog, and engaging Venom F5 to date. Passionate collector and American Entrepreneur, Louis Florey personally specified every bespoke element, from the unique aerodynamic package to the distinctive Cocoa Brown exposed carbon fiber. Working with Hennessey's new 'Maverick' customer commission division, the 1-of-1 model sets a new benchmark for America's Hypercar and demonstrates the capabilities of the Texan firm's world-class designers and engineers. Featuring an all-new carbon fiber tub, the commission pairs Hennessey's latest Evolution package with an open-top F5 in track-spec 'Revolution' configuration. The design is based on the already exclusive 'Stealth Series', which sees exposed carbon fiber flow from nose to tail, broadening to envelop the cockpit before narrowing again beneath the 290 mm-high rear wing. Tinting the carbon fiber Coco Brown, opting for brilliant River Sand Metallic paint – the color of rich champagne, and adding a body-color tri-stripe, then specifying a six-speed gated manual transmission, instantly makes this the most unique and complex F5 to-date. John Hennessey, company founder and CEO: 'When our customers have a dream, we work to make their dreams come true – exceeding customer expectations is a badge of honor. Our new 'Maverick' division enables our customers to take our American Hypercar to a totally new dimension. I see it as the ultimate expression of the American Dream!' Previewing bodywork elements from the forthcoming Venom F5 Evolution, the LF features a wealth of aerodynamic revisions from a new front splitter, reshaped dive planes, re-sculpted fender louvres, a new rear deck with integrated lip spoiler, and a significantly taller rear wing. Paired with new suspension and Hennessey's new 6.6-liter twin-turbo V8 Fury engine with 2,031 bhp, the aerodynamic enhancements ensure high-speed poise on road or track, enabling extreme performance with the roof on or off. Inside, the LF debuts a new generation carbon monocoque. Hennessey's 'XCell_2' tub improves stiffness, seating ergonomics, and pedal box geometry, with repositioned footwells offering space for the third pedal and promoting a more positive driving position. The LF sees machined aluminum pedals completed with laser-etched Hennessey logos and moved to a new floor-mounted configuration. The interior is entirely reimagined with analog connection a guiding principle. A new center console showcases a H-pattern gated shifter – milled from solid aluminum. Above the shifter sit side-by side air vents, with a key 'holster' immediately below, which receives the F5 key as part of the ignition process. Each switch, toggle, and rotary controller has been reengineered with horology-grade detailing – including luminous-infill switchgear, which absorbs ambient light during the day and glows softly at night. Even the parking brake lever is machined to deliver a bolt-action feel, underscoring the obsessive craftsmanship throughout the cabin. Nathan Malinick, Hennessey's Director of Design: 'A common point of celebration for our customers is how the F5 delivers unmatched driving intensity. We built on this prominent theme with Louis Florey, identifying mechanical, sensory, and design-led ways of deepening the connection between F5 and driver. 'The LF demonstrates how far we'll go to deliver an outstanding customer experience and it's the perfect launchpad for our new bespoke 'Maverick' division. It's where engineering meets imagination, and where design fuses with passion – there can be no greater way to connect driver with the most raw, powerful, and intense celebration of internal combustion.' The Maverick division, officially launched with this commission, will allow a small number of customers to work hand-in-hand with the Hennessey team to create uniquely personal Venom F5 builds. From custom paints, new mechanical elements, and exposed carbon finishes to personalized interiors and even reimagined bodywork, the program reflects Hennessey's commitment to celebrating the individuality of its customers – while staying true to Hennessey's pioneering spirit and Texan independence. As the most expensive and complex F5 to date, the Venom F5 Revolution LF will stand alone as a 1-of-1 commission. However, the ethos it represents will carry forward into future Maverick projects – each as bold, personal, and uncompromising as the customers who seek their own American Dream. Monterey Car Week also saw the global public debut for the new 2,031 bhp Venom F5 Revolution Evolution production car. The F5 Evolution is the world's most powerful internal combustion road car and the next generation of Venom F5. All future F5 builds will feature Evolution enhancements as standard, while owners of the 32 customer cars already delivered can upgrade their model to the Evolution specification. Following an extensive development program, this next generation of America's Hypercar features a comprehensive set of updates that boost overall performance, handling, and comfort. The new 'Venom F5 Evolution' has increased power and torque, updated aerodynamics for improved downforce, new mode-adaptive suspension for enhanced handling and ride quality, new interior, plus an optional touring exhaust system and touring seats.
