Kotak Equities reshuffles model portfolio; adds IndiGo, Pidilite; reduces Dabur. Here's what changed
Making adjustments to its
model portfolio
, domestic brokerage firm
Kotak Institutional Equities
has increased the weight of
InterGlobe Aviation
(INDIGO) by 100 basis points to 250 basis points and
Pidilite Industries
(PIDI) by 40 basis points to 190 basis points. Meanwhile,
Dabur
witnessed a decrease in the weightage.
According to the domestic brokerage firm, both companies are positioned as dominant players in their respective sectors, benefiting from several near-term tailwinds.
These include reasonable demand compared to other consumer categories, low raw material prices – specifically, aviation turbine fuel (ATF) for INDIGO and crude oil derivatives for PIDI – and strong pricing power amid weak competition in their respective markets.
Furthermore, a potentially stronger Indian Rupee (INR) could provide additional support to these companies.
On the other hand, Kotak has reduced its weight in Dabur by 140 basis points, citing the company's inability to turn around performance despite favorable rural demand and a strong product portfolio targeting rural markets. Dabur has struggled to execute well in recent quarters and has been removed from the model portfolio as a result.
In its latest model portfolio, Kotak Institutional Equities has allocated the highest weightage to the
banking sector
, with a significant 36.5% exposure.
Axis Bank
,
HDFC Bank
,
ICICI Bank
,
IndusInd Bank
, and
State Bank of India
remain key holdings within the banking segment. The firm maintains exposure to diversified financials with
Bajaj Finance
and
Shriram Finance
, representing a combined 3.6% weightage.
Healthcare services and insurance sectors have also been assigned substantial weights, including
Apollo Hospitals
,
Dr Lal Pathlabs
,
HDFC Life Insurance
, and ICICI Prudential Life.

Pharmaceuticals, including Cipla, Lupin, Mankind Pharma, and Sun Pharmaceuticals, collectively contribute 8.5% to the model portfolio.
In its market outlook, Kotak Institutional Equities notes that despite the escalation of geopolitical tensions between India and Pakistan, the market has remained resilient over the past month. The brokerage attributes the market's steady performance to the resolution of trade and tariff disputes with the US and the easing of geopolitical risks.
Kotak also highlights a recent surge in Foreign Portfolio Investor (FPI) inflows, driven by India's relatively stronger macroeconomic outlook amid global uncertainties.
However, the brokerage firm remains cautious about the earnings season, describing it as 'broadly muted,' with Nifty-50 earnings growing by 4.8% year-on-year in Q4FY25. The brokerage firm points out that banks and downstream oil marketing companies have been the primary contributors to earnings growth, while consumer companies have reported weak volume growth and persistent margin pressures.
Despite the mixed earnings performance, Kotak warns that
valuations
in the Nifty-50 index remain elevated, posing potential downside risks if earnings disappoint in the upcoming quarters. Sectors such as banking and telecommunications are trading at near full valuations, and the brokerage advises caution, particularly for mid- and small-cap stocks, which continue to face pressure amid broader market challenges.

Rupee closes stronger despite headwinds; ends 10 paise higher at 85.80/$
The Indian Rupee regained some ground lost in the previous session, even as the dollar index and oil prices remained on the higher side. The domestic currency appreciated 10 paise to end at 85.80 against the greenback, after closing at 85.90 on Wednesday, according to Bloomberg. The local unit slipped below the 86 mark during Wednesday's session, weighed down by dollar demand from foreign investors. The currency was down by about 0.4 per cent this year so far, while regional peers such as the Korean won, Thai baht, and Malaysian ringgit have gained from the dollar weakening, according to Reuters. During the day, Asian currencies were mostly higher. The rupee has been the worst-performing currency this year, despite a 7.5 per cent GDP growth in the last quarter, taking full-year growth to 6.5 per cent, according to Anil Kumar Bhansali, head of treasury and executive director at Finrex Treasury Advisors LLP. Meanwhile, all eyes will now be on the Reserve Bank of India's (RBI 's) six-member monetary policy committee (MPC), which began its meeting on Wednesday and is expected to cut the repo rate by 25 basis points (bps) to 5.75 per cent. The committee is scheduled to announce its policy review on Friday. The dollar index was marginally higher after data showed hiring growth fell to the slowest pace in two years. Private-sector payrolls increased by 37,000 last month, according to ADP Research, as calls for rate cuts by the Federal Reserve grew. The possibility of a rate cut in September has risen up to 75 per cent, per CME's FedWatch tool. Interest rate futures are pricing in muted odds of Fed cuts in June and July, as per reports. Additionally, the US Federal Reserve's 'Beige Book' report on the economic conditions noted that "economic activity has declined slightly since the previous report," released on April 23. The dollar index, which measures the greenback against a basket of six major currencies, was up 0.07 per cent at 98.86.

How to Predict Central Bank Action: Policy Decision making on Currency and Rates
This article endeavors to analyse macro-economic scenarios, specifically impacting India rates and currency market. This further helps to look into crystal ball by forecasting policy actions by the central bank. The write up should help market participants and treasury leaders from bank or corporates to frame prudent data-driven and actionable views. Treasury departments in most large corporates are the key profit drivers for the shareholders. For anyone heading active treasury functions, the utmost important skill to succeed in such roles is the ability to predict central bank actions. Liquidity is the game changer than Rates Current RBI regime under new Governor has been quite nimble in the actions while shifting the banking system liquidity towards surplus zone. Repo cuts on its own does not have much impact on economy or market rates. 'Term premium' is the key driver for longer term rates in debt capital market and the same helps in rate transmission to bank credit. So, RBI has been pro-active in liquidity management like never before by unleashing all possible long term infusion tools like CRR , OMO and Forex swap. As market experts, we are required to look for lead indicators while predicting RBI action. For example, Open market (OMO) Purchase announcement in April is 1st time in past 20 odd years, when RBI started buying Central Govt securities from market at the start of FY26. This is very strong yield signal from the central bank that they want to keep Gsec yields lower and then induce other rates like corporate bond and bank MCLR to come off. Currency movement: Give INR a fair chance INR could not get a fair chance to appreciate against USD during 2020-24 and even though record amount of FPI flows received during this period. All such flows were absorbed by RBI without even allowing for slightest INR appreciation. Any such central bank action is the perfect backdrop for sharp INR depreciation, as foreign investors entirely shift to long USD / short INR side of market. USD / INR currency pair broke out of a tight range in Nov 2024 and moved towards 88 levels. My views on global currency and rates published in Nov 1st week actually predicted this INR move from 83 to 87 within January 2025, due to the US Govt change and probable tariff driven uncertainties. New RBI regime has allowed INR to move in both directions and even market witnessed larger moves within a week, which were not there earlier during a full year period. So, natural forex volatility is back, which is healthy market condition for both importer and exporter to take active hedging decisions. Forecasting Growth, Inflation and Macro Stability We, as treasury heads in large corporates, keep looking at lead indicators in both global and Indian economies to forecast growth and pricing momentum. Globally GDP prints should be lower in coming quarters, due to overall uncertainty created after tariff conundrum starting April. In the US, stagflation (slow growth and sticky inflation) is already priced into the financial markets as US Treasury 10 Year rate stabilizing near 4.40 – 4.60 band.. India FY26 growth, to the extent dependent upon export of goods or services, could slow down in Q1 and Q2. Further, war related disruptions in May have somewhat impacted consumption momentum. However, indigenous contribution of India's GDP like consumption and investment are looking better. This is driven by low interest rate and consequently better credit pick-up in manufacturing sector. While India CPI projection is under control near 4% handle till Oct-Dec quarter, unique problem for our core CPI is the surge in gold prices. India being large consumer of gold jewelry, resultant service inflation will be higher to that extent. RBI broadly follows the framework to evaluate macro-economic stability by a weighted summation function of Fiscal deficit, Inflation and Current Account Deficit. The lower the output of this function, the better is the economic health of the country. RBI Monetary Policy Actions going ahead While analyzing all the above indicators and the evaluation model mentioned, I foresee RBI to utilize this window of opportunity of stable local macro parameters, by cutting Repo till 5.50 from current 6.00 levels till Aug – Oct 2025. There is paramount need to push growth momentum by fueling the bank credit and incentivizing lower corporate bond rates in debt capital market. Few tweaks in policy rates like lower SDF rate compared to current corridor and indicating more OMO purchase in June, will be more powerful to cut the term premia in market rates.
