Bengaluru Police arrests two for rape threats to actor Ramya

Two men have been arrested in Bengaluru for allegedly posting obscene messages and issuing rape and death threats to former Mandya MP and actor Ramya, also known as Divya Spandana. The arrests follow a formal complaint Ramya lodged with Bengaluru Police Commissioner Seemant Kumar Singh on July 28. The complaint detailed abuse from 43 social media accounts, which targeted her with explicit threats. According to the police, the online harassment began after Ramya posted a news report on July 24 regarding the Supreme Court proceedings in the Renukaswamy murder case. In her post, she called for justice for the victim's family. Kannada actor Darshan is a prime accused in the case, as reported by PTI. At a press conference on Saturday, Commissioner Singh confirmed the arrests and stated: 'Eleven more people have been identified for their direct involvement in posting abusive content online and will be arrested soon.' He explained that a joint investigation by the Central Crime Branch (CCB) and the police's social media monitoring team had verified 13 accounts linked to the threats. 'CCB and cybercrime police are actively working on the case,' he added. Singh noted that the two arrested individuals are residents of neighbouring districts. When questioned about whether the suspects were fans of actor Darshan, he replied that the matter was still under investigation. The arrests mark a significant step in addressing the increasing abuse faced by public figures online. Authorities continue to trace the remaining individuals involved, signalling a crackdown on cyber harassment and threats.

ED conducts fresh searches in Mithi river desilting scam, freezes Rs 47 crore

The Enforcement Directorate (ED), Mumbai Zonal office, conducted follow-up search operations at eight locations across Mumbai on Thursday in connection with an ongoing investigation in the Mithi river desilting scam. The searches covered office / residential premises linked to BMC contractors namely M/s Acute Designs, M/s Kailash Construction Company, M/s Nikhil Construction Co, M/s N A Construction Pvt Ltd, M/s JRS Infrastructure and BMC engineer Prashant Krishna Tayshete. The searches led to freezing of more than Rs 47 crore in multiple bank accounts, Fixed Deposits and Demat accounts. Further, certain digital devices, records pertaining to various immovable properties and incriminating documents have been seized, an ED officer said. The ED initiated investigation on the basis of an FIR lodged on May 6 at Azad Maidan police atation, Mumbai, under various sections of IPC against 13 individuals / entities, including the above-mentioned individuals / entities, for causing wrongful loss of over Rs 65 crore to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). The evidence collected during the course of investigation and the search operations prima facie indicate various irregularities in the works related to desilting of Mithi River by the said contractors in connivance with officials of BMC's SWD department and others. The accused BMC contractors had allegedly submitted various false documents, including MoUs from landowners and NOCs from respective gram panchayats for lands purportedly used for silt dumping. The investigation has also revealed that BMC officials also misused their positions for financial gains in procurement and use of Silt Pusher and Multipurpose Amphibious Pontoon Machines introduced in the tenders for desilting of Mithi River in 2021-22. Earlier, the ED carried out searches at 18 locations on June 6. The total value of Proceeds of Crime (POC) seized / frozen in the case now stands at Rs 49.8 crore (approximately).
