
ED conducts fresh searches in Mithi river desilting scam, freezes Rs 47 crore
The searches covered office / residential premises linked to BMC contractors namely M/s Acute Designs, M/s Kailash Construction Company, M/s Nikhil Construction Co, M/s N A Construction Pvt Ltd, M/s JRS Infrastructure and BMC engineer Prashant Krishna Tayshete.
The searches led to freezing of more than Rs 47 crore in multiple bank accounts, Fixed Deposits and Demat accounts. Further, certain digital devices, records pertaining to various immovable properties and incriminating documents have been seized, an ED officer said.
The ED initiated investigation on the basis of an FIR lodged on May 6 at Azad Maidan police atation, Mumbai, under various sections of IPC against 13 individuals / entities, including the above-mentioned individuals / entities, for causing wrongful loss of over Rs 65 crore to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).
The evidence collected during the course of investigation and the search operations prima facie indicate various irregularities in the works related to desilting of Mithi River by the said contractors in connivance with officials of BMC's SWD department and others.
The accused BMC contractors had allegedly submitted various false documents, including MoUs from landowners and NOCs from respective gram panchayats for lands purportedly used for silt dumping.
The investigation has also revealed that BMC officials also misused their positions for financial gains in procurement and use of Silt Pusher and Multipurpose Amphibious Pontoon Machines introduced in the tenders for desilting of Mithi River in 2021-22.
Earlier, the ED carried out searches at 18 locations on June 6. The total value of Proceeds of Crime (POC) seized / frozen in the case now stands at Rs 49.8 crore (approximately).

A 27-year-old Nepalese woman reported being raped in Patna after arriving from Siliguri in search of employment. She alleges that a bus driver, identified as Kartikeya, gained her trust and then sexually assaulted her for two days, taking her near BSAP-1 building and Gandhi Maidan area. PATNA: An incident rape of a 27-year-old Nepalese woman in the state capital came to light after she filed a written complaint at the Airport police station on Wednesday. She alleged that she reached Patna in search of a job from Siliguri (West Bengal) by a train two days back and was lured by a private bus driver who raped her for two days. In her complaint, the woman alleged, "I reached Patna Junction from Siliguri by a train on Aug 3. After leaving the station, I was sitting outside when a driver approached me and gained my trust. I told him that I came to India in search of a job. The driver said he would help me find one. After that, he took me on a bus to his place and raped me for two days." According to the woman, the accused's name is Kartikeya. He took her by bus near BSAP-1 (Bihar Special Armed Police) building and also near Gandhi Maidan area. She alleged that the accused also snatched Rs 13,000 (Indian currency) and Rs 2,000 (Nepali notes) from her. The first person to learn about the incident was a member of Gorkha Samaj Sewa Service Samiti. Woman left Nepal in search of work He said that around 3pm on Tuesday, he received a call from a person near Gandhi Maidan informing him that a Nepali woman was crying. He arrived at the place with his wife and took the woman to his home. During questioning, the girl shared her story, after which a complaint was filed at the Airport police station on Wednesday. According to police sources, the Nepali woman, under pressure from her stepmother and two stepbrothers to earn money, left her country in search of work. The accused is suspected to be the driver of a private bus hired to transport BSAP personnel to Gandhi Maidan for Independence Day parade rehearsal. Sachivalaya SDPO-1 Anu Kumari said, "The traumatised Nepalese woman is currently not in a condition to provide details about the incident. Her medical examination has been conducted and the report is awaited. Further investigation is going on." The SDPO-1 further added that a Nepali organisation has been informed about the incident. After the legal process is completed, the girl will be sent back to Nepal. Until then, the organisation will take her care. Teacher gets 20- yr jail in POCSO case
Ongole: The POCSO Court at Ongole has sentenced a computer teacher to 20 years imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 15,000 in a case involving sexual harassment of a minor student. The convicted individual, Bommu Pedda Veeraiah (33), from Eguvaramapuram village in Kalasapadu mandal of Kadapa district, was found guilty of sexually harassing a minor girl from Giddalur mandal who studied at the same school where he worked as a computer teacher. According to the case details, Veeraiah had been harassing the girl since seventh grade. Before her tenth-grade examinations, Veeraiah's inappropriate behaviour in the laboratory prompted the girl to inform her mother, who complained to the school principal. However, the harassment continued. During Dussehra holidays in 2018, while the victim was visiting home from Tirupati, where she was pursuing Intermediate studies, Veeraiah threatened to post her nude photographs on social media and demanded money and gold. When the victim brought the demanded items, he lured her to Kachiguda in Telangana state under the pretext of deleting the photos, where he sexually assaulted her at a lodge and later at a rented house. Following the family complaint, Giddalur police registered a case. They conducted investigations under the supervision of then Markapur DSP G Nageswara Reddy and Darsi DSP K Prakash Rao, leading to the arrest of accused. On Wednesday, POCSO Court Judge K Shailaja delivered the verdict after effective prosecution by Special Public Prosecutor Gottipatii Srinivasarao. The court also ordered Rs 2 lakh compensation for the victim through the District Legal Services Authority. Prakasam district SP AR Damodar praised the investigating officers and emphasised that perpetrators of sexual crimes against children and women cannot escape the law.

Two key Bengal cricket board officials face allegations of financial misconduct
The Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) is facing internal turbulence as two of its senior officials — Joint Secretary Debabrata Das and Treasurer Prabir Chakraborty — come under the scanner for alleged financial irregularities and misuse of Das, a prominent figure in the Bengal cricketing circuit, has been issued a show cause notice by the CAB. He has been accused of withholding nearly Rs 7 lakh in ticket revenue from the association and retaining money meant for East Bengal and Town Club's tournament participation. The CAB has asked Das to clear the dues within 15 days. While this specific issue was addressed at the recent Apex Council meeting, other serious allegations — including the acceptance of funds in return for team selections — remain controversy surrounding Das is not new. He was earlier involved in a public spat with former India wicketkeeper Wriddhiman Saha, who accused him of questioning his commitment to the Bengal team. The fallout led to Saha's move to Tripura. In another development, CAB Treasurer Prabir Chakraborty has been accused of a conflict of interest. A complaint filed by the Wari Club was referred by the Ombudsman back to the Apex Council, which has now forwarded it again to the Ombudsman for a formal investigation.
