Lewis Hamilton's name change, Monaco winner's net worth, dating history
Sir Lewis Hamilton has once again been named as the UK's richest active sportsperson, but the F1 star's life has seen a lot happen away from the track
Formula One ace Sir Lewis Hamilton has once again topped the list as the UK's wealthiest active sportsman, according to the 2025 Sunday Times Rich List. The seven-time world champion was previously ranked as the 350th richest individual in the UK, boasting a staggering net worth of £350million.
However, following his lucrative switch from Mercedes to Ferrari ahead of the 2025 Formula One World Championship, his fortune has skyrocketed, with his net worth now estimated at £385m, placing him 324th on the list. Hamilton's surprise move to Ferrari sent shockwaves through the F1 community, especially since he had inked a two-year contract with Mercedes the previous summer before opting to activate a one-year break clause.
The 40-year-old is reportedly set to pocket an eye-watering £50m annually with his new team, having agreed to a two-season contract with an option for a third in 2027. This salary shatters the record for the highest F1 pay packet ever, a record previously held by Max Verstappen last season when he earned a base salary of £47m, reports Wales Online.
Hamilton's earnings could potentially exceed his £50m salary, as this figure is not thought to include performance bonuses, meaning it could significantly increase if the season proves successful. However, after six races with Ferrari, the British star has yet to secure a podium finish, with his fourth placed finish at the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix being his best performance with the Scuderia.
He clinched his last World Championship title in 2020, equalling Michael Schumacher's seven-world-title record and solidifying his status as one of the greatest racing drivers ever. Since then, there's been plenty of buzz around Hamilton's life off the circuit, including whispers about his romantic connections with various A-list celebrities and even chatter about him considering a name change. Mirror Sport takes you through some of these occurrences.
Surprise name change
Hamilton made headlines when he announced a surprise name change. In 2021, after being knighted for his contributions to motorsport, Hamilton brought along his mother Carmen, who separated from his father Anthony during his childhood, to witness his knighthood ceremony conducted by King Charles at Windsor Castle.
The year after his knighthood, Hamilton disclosed his intentions to honour his mother in an impactful way, declaring that he was in the process of legally adopting her maiden name, Larbalestier, into his own as a middle name. He said: "None of you might know that my mum's [sur]name is Larbalestier, and I'm just about to put that in my name.
"Because I don't really fully understand the whole idea of why, when people get married, the woman loses her name. I really want her name to continue on with the Hamilton name."
It's unknown as to whether Hamilton has followed through with the legal procedures to effectuate the name change.
Lewis Hamilton's dating history
Hamilton's love life continues to draw attention, especially considering his past relationships with prominent stars. Throughout his illustrious career, Hamilton's high-profile relationships and romantic life have been under intense media scrutiny.
He has reportedly dated an array of A-list celebrities over the years, including his well-publicised romance with Pussycat Dolls singer Nicole Scherzinger, which lasted for nearly eight years. The on-again, off-again relationship began when they met at the 2007 MTV EMAs but ended for good in February 2015, after three break-ups. At the time, both parties were said to be "devastated" by the split.
Scherzinger moved on to date Bulgarian tennis player Grigor Dimitrov, followed by Scottish rugby international Thom Evans, to whom she is now engaged. Hamilton, meanwhile, has been linked to numerous high-profile figures from the music, fashion, and entertainment industries.
Some of these rumoured connections include supermodels Gigi Hadid and Kendall Jenner, as well as singer Rihanna, all of whom he claimed were simply close friends. Other prominent names associated with the British racing star include singers Rita Ora, Nicki Minaj, and Shakira, alongside model Juliana Nalu, an ex-girlfriend of Kanye West.
More recently, Hamilton sparked romance speculation when spotted having lunch with Modern Family actress Sofia Vergara, 12 years his senior, in New York. TMZ stated the couple were "engrossed in conversation" yet any whispers of romance have been squashed, as it appears they are both friends.
Hollywood film role
Hamilton is set to blaze his trail into Tinseltown later this year with 'F1: The Movie' hitting cinemas. He'll join Hollywood big-hitters like Brad Pitt and Javier Bardem in a fast-paced drama that's got motorsport fans' hearts racing. Pitt plays an ex-F1 driver pushed back onto the track to guide a young hotshot.
Hamilton will be sharing the silver screen with all the speedsters from 2023's F1 teams, appearing as themselves. He has been praised by the directors, not just for his acting, but also as a producer, where he helped ensure the scenery and the happenings were as close to F1 reality as possible.
Director Joseph Kosinski said to Formula1.com: "The first day was really fun. It was me, Brad and Lewis Hamilton at the track together, all of us jumping in cars and driving each other around in sports cars, which was one of those things, I'll never forget having Lewis Hamilton as your driving instructor.
"Brad and Damson are both driving in this film and in order to get them into these race cars, it required months, literally months of training. But what we learned and what Lewis was really interested [in] was seeing, did Brad know how to drive, right? Because if Brad can't drive, this whole film wasn't going to work.
"What Lewis was very happy to discover was that Brad had a lot of just natural ability right from the start, and I don't know where he got that or if he was born with it, and he rides motorcycles, which I think has something to do with it. But he's just a very talented, naturally gifted driver, which for Lewis after that first meeting gave him a lot of confidence that we might have a shot at pulling this off."

Spanish Grand Prix practice: Latest updates from Barcelona
Latest updates Kieran Crichard 30 May 2025 1:20pm 1:20PM Long runs Norris is on the soft tyre and McLaren will be getting some data on how the soft is performing over a longer run. The McLaren is so good on its tyres, which is a big part of why their race pace is very good. 1:15PM Top ten with 15 minutes to go Norris 1:13.718 Verstappen +0.367 Hamilton +0.378 Leclerc +0.520 Piastri +0.576 Lawson +621 Bearman +0.879 Hadjar +0.887 Tsunoda +0.925 Gasly +1.028 1:04PM Changes at the top Leclerc had gone half a second faster than Russell but he is then pipped at the top by Verstappen. Norris is on a lap, as is Hamilton. The seven-time world champion is just off the time of Verstappen before Norris goes purple, purple, purple to go nearly four tenths quicker than Verstappen. Piastri can only go fifth, more than half a second down on his teammate Norris. 1:00PM New man at the top of the timesheets Mercedes' George Russell is on the medium tyre and goes just over half a second clear of Norris. The Sauber of Hulkenberg then jumps up into second, just over a tenth off Russell, but he is on the soft tyre. Hamilton is now back out on track and has a new set of softs on the car. His Ferrari teammate Leclerc is also on a new set of softs. 12:59PM Meanwhile at Alpine It has been a tumultuous few months for the team, with now former team principal Oliver Oakes departing and they have already had a change of drivers with Colapinto replacing Jack Doohan. Flavio Briatore is back at the team and seemingly at the helm and he will face the media in between sessions. 12:55PM Activity at Ferrari The mechanics are hard at work on Hamilton's Ferrari. 12:54PM Not much change? Verstappen, who sits third on the timesheets at the moment, has also been having his say ahead of the weekend on the front wings: 'It will change the balance of the car a bit. I do not expect massive time gains or losses between the teams. The wings never gave us a massive performance gain. I do not know if we got it wrong or did not extract the most from it. 'Even for the other teams, I am sure it is manageable. If you have a good car, you have a good car. Okay the front wing bends a bit less but you can tune it around.' 12:47PM View from the seven-time world champion Hamilton has nearly collided with the RB of Hadjar at turn 12. He is currently eighth fastest and here is what he has had to say on the testing of the flexible front wings ahead of the weekend: 'The flexi-wing was a band-aid for quality design I would say - getting the set-up and creating devices and mechanisms on the car mechanically, all the engineers are able to do it. 'It is still not that easy to get the load that you need on the front end at a low speed, or just rely solely on mechanical grip. So far everyone has been managing, some people better than others. 'This weekend is going to be interesting because we have got less flex at the front wing. You have a lot of front end at high-speed corners and less at low speed. It will be interesting to see how that affects different teams. Some teams probably did a better job than others, so I have no idea how it will affect us.' 12:43PM That did not last long! Norris goes purple in the first two sectors and goes quickest overall, over two tenths clear of Alonso. Here is the current top five: Norris 1:15.259 Alonso +0.221 Verstappen +0.546 Piastri +0.553 Stroll +0.663 12:41PM Home fans celebrating Still early days in FP1 but Alonso is at the top of the timesheets, much to the delight of the home faithful. I suspect there will not be many times at all this weekend that Alonso or Sainz will be fastest. He is a tenth and a half clear of Norris. Verstappen is in third followed by Piastri and Leclerc.

Major change kicks in for EVERY driveway in England ‘to save months of delays and cut costs'
It hopes to accelerate the rollout of EVs CHARGING AHEAD Major change kicks in for EVERY driveway in England 'to save months of delays and cut costs' Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) A MAJOR rule change has come for drivers around the UK in a positive move for home and vehicle owners. The change involves the installation of electric vehicle (EV) chargers for both public and private use. Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up 2 The new driveway law is for every household in the UK Credit: Alamy 2 It is expected to save thousands of pounds a year and wait times Credit: Alamy There is a current target to install 300,000 chargers across the UK by 2030, a goal set out by the previous Conservative government. From this week, those wanting to install an EV charger will no longer require planning permission from a local authority. The new move by Labour is expected to save driver £1,100 a year, as well as months of delays. Liberty to install EV chargers was already the case for most on a private property with off-street parking. But for larger public developments, a green light from local authorities was required. CEO of charger provider Osprey, Ian Johnston, told Autocar last year: "The problem is you've got to go through a process which is under-resourced and takes six to nine months to get planning permission.' The process has been deemed a key bottleneck in the roll-out of the nation's EV and charging network. The Future of Roads Minister, Lilian Greenwood, said: "We're cutting down on paperwork to power up the EV revolution so that drivers, businesses and those looking to make the switch will have more charge points to power from and less red tape to deal with." These rule changes hope to help the "EV revolution" by what Ms Greenwood considers making it "easier than ever to install EV chargers" for EV drivers across the UK. The Labour MP continued: "We continue to make the switch to EVs easier, cheaper and better by investing over £2.3billion to support drivers and back British carmakers through international trade deals - creating jobs, boosting investment and securing our future as part of our Plan for Change." Audi launches NEW superfast charging hybrid with eye-watering price Operations Director at Osprey Charging Network, Lewis Gardiner welcomed the government's "practical change" in policy which he believes will make a "huge difference" for the industry. He added: "Removing the need for planning permission for essential electrical infrastructure like substations across the majority of sites will save months of delays, reduce costs and accelerate the delivery of the rapid charging hubs drivers need." Jack Counsens, head of roads policy at The AA, praised the positive step but said the government should be doing all it can: "The crucial element is ensuring grid connection in a timely manner. "This is especially important in rural locations and areas where there is no dedicated off-street parking." A charger mapping by firm Zap-Map has shown there were more than 79,000 publicly accessible charge points across the UK at the end of last month. This is an increase of 6,000 since the end of 2024, but just a quarter of the final goal for the next five years.

Max Verstappen to seal F1 future after Spanish GP with key contract development
Aston Martin and Mercedes have been strongly linked with Max Verstappen but the clause in his contract which may allow him to leave Red Bull at the end of this year will soon expire Max Verstappen is set to remain at Red Bull in 2026 with the contract clause causing so much speculation over his future soon to expire. The Dutchman signed his current contract at the start of 2022, after his first title win. Now aged 27 and a four-time Formula 1 champion, Verstappen still has three more seasons on that Red Bull deal after this one. But that hasn't stopped constant speculation over his future thanks to the widely-known existence of a crucial performance clause. It would allow Verstappen to leave if certain conditions were not met by the team. Such clauses are common as drivers want to ensure they can continue to drive competitive machinery and, with Red Bull no longer the omnipotent force in F1, speculation has suggested he could quit for Mercedes or Aston Martin. But it is now more likely than ever that the Dutchman will remain with Red Bull for at least another year. That is because the contract clause which could have allowed him to consider his options is set to expire. Sign up to our free weekly F1 newsletter, Pit Lane Chronicle, by entering your email address below so that every new edition lands straight in your inbox! As reported by Autosport, it is understood that the clause which would allow Verstappen to walk away from his Red Bull contract based on performance is set to expire at the end of June. So as long as he remains in the top four in the drivers' standings until then, he will not be able to break his contract this year. Verstappen is currently third in the championship on 136 points. Crucially, though, he is 57 clear of Charles Leclerc who currently occupies fifth place, making it highly unlikely that he will drop out of the top four over the next few weeks. There are three events to be held between now and the expiry of that contract clause. With a maximum of 50 points up for grabs across the Canadian and Austrian Grands Prix, it means Verstappen's future could be sealed after this weekend's Spanish Grand Prix. If Verstappen remains 50 points or more clear of Leclerc – or whoever is in fifth place – by the conclusion of the action in Barcelona, then his future will be effectively sealed. Even if the gap is slightly narrower then, realistically, the four-time champion would need to finish outside the points in both the Canada and Austria races for there to be any chance of him slipping out of the top four by the end of June. Meanwhile, Verstappen hinted at where his long-term future may lie away from F1 this week by confirming he had successfully obtained a Platinum driver rating from the FIA, which allows him to compete in GT or sports car racing. "I applied," he told reporters in Barcelona, weeks after he was spotted testing a Ferrari GT car on the fearsome Nurburgring Nordschleife. "I have to do it at some point, so I better got it out of the way. I mean, it's super easy, it's just a form that you fill in and you pay and a week later you have the answer. I was secretly hoping for a Bronze rating; I might appeal the Platinum and get Silver at least."
