Winthrop downs UNC Asheville 86-67 to advance to Big South Conference Tournament title game
JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (AP) — Nick Johnson had 15 points in third-seeded Winthrop's 86-67 win over No. 2 seed UNC Asheville on Saturday in a Big South Conference Tournament semifinal.
Winthrop (23-10) will move on to face top-seeded High Point (28-5) in the title game on Sunday.
Johnson went 5 of 9 from the field (5 for 6 from 3-point range). Kelton Talford added 14 points and 13 rebounds for the Eagles. Kasen Harrison finished with 14 points and nine assists.
Toyaz Solomon finished with 15 points and eight rebounds for the Bulldogs (21-11). Kameron Taylor added 14 points, six rebounds and two blocks for UNC Asheville. Josh Banks also had 10 points and seven rebounds.
Winthrop took the lead with 11:35 left in the first half and never looked back. The score was 46-30 at halftime, with Johnson racking up 12 points. Paul Jones III scored 10 of his 13 points in the second half for Winthrop.

Bears coach Ben Johnson purchased a $3.25M mansion in Lake Forest earlier this year
Chicago Bears head coach Ben Johnson and his wife, Jessica, in March paid $3.25 million for a six-bedroom, 6,227-square-foot mansion in Lake Forest, not far from the Bears' Halas Hall headquarters and offices. Johnson held a variety of assistant coaching roles for the Detroit Lions for six years — including his final three years as offensive coordinator — before the Bears hired him on Jan. 21. Through an opaque land trust that masks their identities, Johnson and his wife bought their new house in Lake Forest, which was built in 2013 and has five full bathrooms, three half bathrooms, four fireplaces, white oak hardwood floors, 10-foot ceilings on all floors, four-piece moldings, radiant heat floors in every full bathroom and a spiral staircase. Other features include an office with custom walnut paneling and built-in Burmeister shelving, French doors and a kitchen with quartz countertops, custom Burmeister soft-close cabinetry, Wolf double ovens, a Wolf six-burner cooktop, a 48-inch Sub-Zero refrigerator and freezer, two Miele dishwashers, a walk-in pantry and work area and a large island that contains a quartz countertop, a breakfast bar that seats four and a Shaws farmhouse-style prep sink. The mansion also has a mud room and a lower level with radiant heat flooring, an exercise room, a theater room with a retractable screen and a rec room with a fireplace and a wood bar. On the second floor, the primary bedroom suite has a vaulted ceiling, a walk-in closet with an island and a primary bathroom with radiant heat flooring and a double vanity. Outdoor features include a cedar shake roof, copper gutters and downspouts, a three-car garage with radiant heat floors, a lighted sport court, a brick fireplace and a bluestone patio with a built-in Fisher & Paykel grill with separate gas burners. The mansion sits on a 2.45-acre property. The sellers first listed it in February for $3.35 million, and went under contract with the Johnsons just five days later. Ellen Chukerman of Compass represented the Johnsons in their purchase. She declined to comment on the deal. The mansion had a $50,159 property tax bill in the 2023 tax year. As Elite Street first reported, the Johnsons on July 19 listed their four-bedroom, 3,940-square-foot house in Plymouth, Mich. for $1.1 million, and the home currently has a contract pending. Johnson's predecessor as the Bears' permanent head coach, Matt Eberflus, continues to own a seven-bedroom, 11,310-square-foot lakefront mansion in Lake Bluff that he purchased in 2022 for $3.9 million. Eberflus now is the defensive coordinator for the Dallas Cowboys.

Four Nittany Lions make preseason All-American teams
In a preseason that has contained the most hype for the Nittany Lions in over two decades, Penn State continues to dominate preseason All-American teams. The AP just released their teams yesterday and Penn State's dominance was almost certainly felt. Four Nittany Lions ultimately ended up landing on their teams, with three first-team selections and one second-team selection. That ties them with Texas for most first-team selections in the country and finally gives them a second-teamer after the same three players had been selected to the first teams of several other publications. The three players in question that again made the first team are defensive tackle and breakout star of last season Zane Durant, offensive lineman Olaivevega Ioane, and star running back Nicholas Singleton. Backfield running mate Kaytron Allen slots into the second team. This marks Durant's fifth preseason All-American team selection across five publications, Ioane's sixth, and Singleton's fifth. This is Allen's second second-team selection, but it is still notable that one of the deepest squads somehow don't have the subsequent depth on All-American preseason teams. Despite some snubs however, the fact that Durant, Ioane, and Singleton have represented the team so strongly must feel good for Penn State fans. Durant had a breakout 2024 that saw him tied for first amongst defensive tackles and sacks with three and third in TFLs with 11. Ioane was an All-Big Ten second team selection last year and helped the Nittany Lions have one of the most efficient offenses in the country, leading the nation in first downs. And people don't have to be told about both Singleton and Allen, as both could be on the precipice of being Nos. 1 and 2, respectively on Penn State's all-time rushing leaders charts. They already are 1 and 2 in terms of returning FBS players, so why not go for a program record and leave a major legacy behind? These preseason All-American selections do bolster their odds. Most importantly, this gives Penn State bragging rights within the conference. In fact, the only other Big Ten squad to even have multiple first-team selections was No. 3 Ohio State, landing both Jeremiah Smith and Caleb Downs on the first team. Not even those selections can slow Penn State's mojo however. Let's see if these selections prove the Associated Press right.
