Maryland man found dead at Atlantis resort in the Bahamas
A 23-year-old Maryland man was found dead while he was on vacation with his family on Paradise Island in the Bahamas, police said on Wednesday.
Dinari McAlmont, of Bowie, Maryland, was found unresponsive on a beach on Saturday, according to a statement from the Royal Bahamas Police Force. A spokesperson for Atlantis Paradise Island Bahamas confirmed on Wednesday that one of its guests died.
Police said that a post-mortem examination revealed that McAlmont died as a result of drowning.
"Further, police are still awaiting the forensic toxicology analysis, and investigations are ongoing," police said. "That said, foul play is not suspected at this time."
However, the 23-year-old's mother, Michelle McAlmont, told Eyewitness News Bahamas on Tuesday that her son's face looked beaten when authorities showed her his body.
"I need justice for my baby," she said through tears. "I need justice."
McAlmont's family could not be reached for comment.
Atlantis Paradise Island Bahamas released a short statement on Wednesday, confirming the death.
"Our thoughts and condolences are with the guest's family and loved ones during this difficult time," the spokesperson said in a statement.
The spokesperson added that the resort will not comment further while they await "police's final report."
In July, an American woman, Taylor Casey, went missing on Paradise Island while on a monthlong yoga retreat. Her whereabouts are still unknown.

Trump says Abrego Garcia's return to US 'wasn't my decision'
Abrego Garcia, a sheet metal worker and father of three from Maryland, was wrongly deported to El Salvador in March despite a 2019 court order barring his removal. His case drew national attention, after a standoff among the Trump administration, the courts and some congressional Democrats over his release. In April, a unanimous Supreme Court ordered the Trump administration to "facilitate" Abrego Garcia's return to the United States. Officials claimed they couldn't force a sovereign nation - El Salvador - to relinquish a prisoner. The Trump administration insists that Abrego Garcia is a member of the MS-13 gang, but a federal judge had previously questioned the strength of the government's evidence. Abrego Garcia denies being a gang member. Now, the Maryland man faces new charges on American soil. At a June 6 press conference, U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi accused Abrego Garcia of making over 100 trips to smuggle undocumented immigrants across the nation. The indictment against Abrego Garcia alleges that he and co-conspirators worked with people in other countries to transport immigrants from El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Ecuador, and Mexico, and then took the people from Houston to Maryland, often varying their routes, and coming up with cover stories about construction if they were pulled over. Trump told NBC News he believes "it should be a very easy case" for federal prosecutors. But Simon Sandoval-Moshenberg, a lawyer for Abrego Garcia, criticized the Justice Department for bringing these charges at all: "Due process means the chance to defend yourself before you're punished, not after. This is an abuse of power, not justice." Contributing: USA TODAY Staff

Harrowing images of Los Angeles as city burns over Trump's migrant crackdown
Crowds have rampaged through the streets of LA following clashes with ICE immigration officials as Donald Trump called in the National Guard with cars burned in the streets and businesses looted Donald Trump has called for anyone wearing a mask to be arrested during violent clashes between protestors and federal law enforcement in Los Angeles. Shocking images showed crowds clashing with authorities and cars set ablaze as Trump sent in National Guard troops to try and restore order - a move California Governor Gavin Newsom blasted as 'illegal'. Meanwhile law enforcement officers have reportedly fired tear gas and rubber bullets at the crowds. 'Bring in the troops,' declared Trump, taking to his Truth Social platform to blast the scenes of violence on the streets of downtown LA. The violent clashes have rocked the American city with cars set alight and reports of looting after a crackdown by the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers sparked protests. Shocking images showed police vehicles ablaze as rioters clashed with authorities, including 2,000 National Guard troops sent in by the White House. President Trump called for further crackdowns on protests overnight, urging LA police chief Jim McDonnell to bring troops into LA. Writing on Truth Social, Trump said: 'Looking really bad in L.A. BRING IN THE TROOPS!!!" In another post he added: "ARREST THE PEOPLE IN FACE MASKS, NOW!" Meanwhile tempers have flared after California's Governor, Democrat Gavin Newsom, accused President Trump's border czar Tom Homan of threatening to arrest him. 'Trump's border czar is threatening to arrest me for speaking out. Come and get me, tough guy. I don't give a damn,' Newsom vowed in a post on X. 'It won't stop me from standing up for California.' Governor Newsom blasted Trump for overstepping his boundaries by deploying National Guard troopers to the city, in a separate post, stating: 'local law enforcement didn't need help.' Newsom wrote: 'Let's get this straight: 1) Local law enforcement didn't need help. 2) Trump sent troops anyway — to manufacture chaos and violence. 3) Trump succeeded. 4) Now things are destabilized, and we need to send in more law enforcement just to clean up Trump's mess.' LAPD Central Division said businesses had reported looters rampaging through stores. Posting on X the force said: "Business owners are reporting stores are being looted in the area of 6th St and Broadway. Officers are en route to the location to investigate." Meanwhile on Sunday night the Los Angeles Police Department declared an 'unlawful assembly' in the downtown area as protesters continued to rampage through the streets. 'Agitators have splintered into and throughout the Downtown Area," the LAPD's Central Division wrote on X. "Residents, businesses and visitors to the Downtown Area should be alert and report any criminal activity. Officers are responding to several different locations to disperse crowds.' "An UNLAWFUL ASSEMBLY has been declared for the Downtown Los Angeles area," the department added. Police said a phone alert has been sent to people in the Civic Center area of the city demanding crowds disperse.

LA protest photos show tensions over ICE detentions
On the social media platform X, California Gov. Gavin Newsom called Hegseth's threat to deploy active troops on American citizens "deranged behavior." The Secretary of Defense is now threatening to deploy active-duty Marines on American soil against its own citizens. This is deranged behavior. — Gavin Newsom (@GavinNewsom) June 8, 2025 In a June 8 social media post Trump said, "These Radical Left protests, by instigators and often paid troublemakers, will NOT BE TOLERATED." White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said Trump signed a memo a day earlier deploying the guardsmen "to address the lawlessness that has been allowed to fester." In an earlier post, Newsome accused Trump of deploying the National Guard "not because there is a shortage of law enforcement, but because they want a spectacle." "Don't give them one," added Newsom. "Never use violence. Speak out peacefully." Photos of the protests show protestors carrying Mexican flags, being arrested by police or having milk poured into their eyes after getting caught in chemical agents fired by law enforcement. The protests came after the Department of Homeland Security said it arrested 118 people accused of being undocumented immigrants in Los Angeles.
