Rare juvenile dinosaur 'Ceratosaurus' fossil sells for $30.5 million at Sotheby's auction

Time of India19-07-2025
A rare juvenile
Ceratosaurus fossil
believed to be the only one of its kind sold for a jaw-dropping $30.5 million at Sotheby's on Wednesday(July 16).
The fossil, uncovered in 1996 at Bone Cabin Quarry in Wyoming, is one of only four known Ceratosaurus skeletons ever discovered and the only juvenile among them. Measuring over six feet tall and nearly 11 feet long, the 150-million-year-old relic includes 139 fossilized bone elements, 57 of which form what Sotheby's calls a 'superb, virtually complete skull.'

Described by the auction house as 'one of the finest and most complete examples of its kind ever found,' the dinosaur far surpassed its $4 million to $6 million pre-sale estimate during a dramatic six-minute bidding war between six participants. It previously spent over two decades on display at the Museum of Ancient Life in Utah but has never been formally studied in scientific literature.

Ceratosaurus nasicornis was a carnivorous dinosaur known for its distinctive nasal horn, long teeth, and bony armor along its spine and tail. The species roamed North America during the late Jurassic period.
While Sotheby's says the unnamed buyer intends to loan the fossil to an institution, paleontologists remain cautious.
Live Events
'Who has that kind of money to spend on a dinosaur? Certainly not any museums or educational institutions,' said Steve Brusatte, a
paleontology
professor at the University of Edinburgh. 'My fear is that this skeleton will disappear into the ether into a mansion or a bank vault.'
Still, auction officials argue the private market can play a vital role in preserving and promoting scientific specimens.
'These stellar results underscore a deep and enduring fascination with the natural world,' said Cassandra Hatton, Sotheby's global head of science and natural history. 'What draws collectors is more than a passion for science; it's curiosity about the forces that shaped our planet.'
The sale follows a trend of surging
fossil prices
, including last year's record-breaking $44.6 million sale of 'Apex,' a Stegosaurus skeleton that now resides at the American Museum of Natural History.
'Bottom line,' said Brusatte, 'a world where dinosaur skeletons can fetch tens of millions of dollars is not a world where
dinosaurs
will long be accessible to educate and inspire everyone.'

Despite its recent rally, Bitcoin remains just shy of breaking above the $120,000 resistance level. 'Bitcoin continues to hover just shy of the $120,000 mark, catching its breath after bouncing back from its latest pullback,' Thakral said. Key support levels are currently at $116,411 and $115,000, while the next major resistance stands around $138,000. According to Piyush Walke, Derivatives Research Analyst at Delta Exchange, 'Bitcoin has traded between $118,000 and $120,000 over the past two days. Sathvik Vishwanath, Co-Founder and CEO of Unocoin, noted that institutional inflows via ETFs remain a strong bullish driver. 'Bitcoin is consolidating just below $120K, forming a bullish cup-and-handle pattern,' he said. 'But strong overhead supply limits a breakout. If BTC manages to hold this range and volume picks up, a surge toward $130K is likely.' The recent price movement has also been supported by macroeconomic developments. Harish Vatnani, Head of Trade at ZebPay, said Bitcoin's rally above $119,000 coincided with easing geopolitical tensions after the U.S. and China agreed to delay mutual trade tariffs. 'Bitcoin is now eyeing a daily close above its 10-day moving average, after rebounding from the $114,500 zone,' Vatnani added. He also pointed out that BTC recently made a new all-time high of $123,218 before pulling back to its current range between $120,500 and $115,500, where it's forming a potential bullish flag pattern. A breakout above $125,000 could lead to another leg up. ( Disclaimer : Recommendations, suggestions, views and opinions given by the experts are their own. How China's Shaolin ‘CEO monk' suffered a great fall? Under probe for ‘improper relationship' with women, illegitimate kids, and embezzlement

Shi Yongxin , the abbot of China 's iconic Shaolin Temple , is under investigation for alleged embezzlement and violations of Buddhist conduct, the temple's administration confirmed in a statement on Sunday, July 27. The statement said Shi is suspected of misappropriating project funds and temple assets. He is also accused of violating Buddhist precepts by maintaining improper relationships with multiple women over an extended period and fathering at least one child, which the temple authority called illegitimate in their WeChat post, a serious breach of monastic vows that require celibacy. The temple administration said, 'Relevant information will be announced to the public in a timely manner. " Shi has not commented publicly, and CNN has been unable to reach him. Who is Shi Yongxin? Live Events Shi Yongxin, 59, has led the Shaolin Temple since 1999. Known in Chinese media as the 'CEO monk,' he is widely recognized for commercializing the temple and expanding its global presence. He is the first Chinese abbot to hold an MBA and has been active in politics, serving as a delegate to China's National People's Congress for two decades. He was frequently spotted traveling around the world with an iPhone in hand, meeting influential figures such as the late Queen Elizabeth II of Great Britain, the late South African President Nelson Mandela, Henry Kissinger, and Apple CEO Tim Cook. In February 2025, Shi led a delegation of monks to meet Pope Francis at the Vatican. Under his leadership, the temple licensed its name to films, games, and cartoons, staged Shaolin kung fu performances globally, and entered into publishing, traditional Chinese medicine, tourism, and real estate ventures. Past criticism Shi's efforts to brand and commercialize Shaolin drew criticism over the years, with some accusing him of undermining the temple's spiritual role. According to a CNN report, in 2006, he accepted a 1 million yuan car from a local government to promote tourism, which sparked backlash. At the time, he told Chinese state media, 'Monks are also citizens… we have fulfilled our duties and made contributions to society.' In 2015, Shi Yongxin faced a wave of allegations posted on Chinese social media by an anonymous user claiming to be a former disciple. The accusations included embezzlement, having multiple identities, and fathering children, charges that made national headlines. The Shaolin Temple denied the claims, calling them 'fabricated and malicious,' and authorities launched an investigation. According to Caixin Global and CNN, the probe concluded in 2017 with no evidence to support the allegations, and Shi was cleared of wrongdoing. Despite that, Shi remained influential and was re-elected in 2020 as deputy head of the Buddhist Association of China . Consequences On Monday, July 28, the Buddhist Association of China announced, citing the Shaolin Temple Management's situation report, that Shi had been stripped of his ordination certificate. In a statement quoted by CNN, the association said his actions were 'of an extremely egregious nature, severely tarnishing the reputation of the Buddhist community.' The Shaolin Temple, founded over 1,500 years ago (AD 495) in Henan province, is revered worldwide for its connection to Zen Buddhism and Shaolin kung fu. It is the birthplace of Chan Buddhism, a precursor to the meditative Zen tradition, and is famous for its 'warrior monks.'
