KUALA LUMPUR - President Ferdinand ''Bongbong'' Marcos Jr. acknowledged the role of the Gulf Cooperation Council and China in the development of artificial intelligence.
During the ASEAN-GCC-China Summit on Tuesday, Marcos said the GCC and China have become immersed "as global leaders in AI innovation."
''Let us also deepen cooperation in digital trade, cybersecurity and the development of digital skills so that our youth, entrepreneurs, and our workers are equipped to thrive in an AI-driven world,'' he added.
It was Chinese Premier Li Qiang who attended the ASEAN-GCC-China Summit held at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre. The member states of the GCC include Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates.
Marcos had vowed to push for an ethical and responsible AI during the 46th ASEAN Summit and Related Summits.
In 2023, Marcos underscored that the Philippines was ready for AI as he called on technology firms to partner with the Philippines in what he described as a "technological revolution."
Marcos had said Manila is already embracing the AI revolution to augment the existing skills of Filipinos, increase the productivity of enterprises, and enhance the competitiveness of the economy.—LDF, GMA Integrated News

Mohd Rasfan/ Pool via REUTERS/ File photo KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia - Brunei's Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah has been discharged from hospital and will remain in the Malaysian capital for a few more days to rest, his office said on Saturday. Sultan Hassanal was admitted to hospital in Kuala Lumpur on Tuesday due to fatigue, though his office had insisted the world's longest-serving monarch was in "good health". 'His Majesty Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah ... praise be to God, is back at the Grand Hyatt Hotel after resting a few days at the National Heart Institute, Kuala Lumpur," his office said in an Instagram post on Saturday. "Medical experts have advised His Majesty to continue resting for a few more days before departing back to Brunei," it added. The 78-year-old sultan was in Kuala Lumpur for a summit with other Association of Southeast Asian Nations leaders. A statement from the Brunei prime minister's office -- a position held by the sultan -- on Tuesday said the monarch had been feeling tired and that Malaysian health experts had advised him to rest for a few days at the National Heart Institute. Sultan Hassanal ascended the throne in 1967. He is one of the richest people on the planet, and comes from a family that has ruled Brunei, a small Muslim nation perched on the north of the tropical island of Borneo, for more than 600 years. His decades ruling Brunei have seen the country gain full independence from Britain and living standards soar to among the highest globally. But his reign has also been marked by controversies including the introduction of tough Islamic laws legislating penalties such as severing of limbs and death by stoning. — Agence France-Presse

VP Sara: Reconciling with Marcos not a priority
Vice President Sara Duterte said she is not prioritizing talks of reconciliation with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., saying the welfare of the public matters more than "personal issues." 'Unang-una, hindi muna siguro ako magsalita about reconciliation dahil hindi naman mahalaga siguro ang mga personal na problema... Ang mas mahalaga is 'yong taumbayan at iyong bayan natin,' she told reporters during an ambush interview at The Hague. (First of all, I don't think I should speak about reconciliation for now because personal problems are not important. What's more important is the people and our country.) VP Sara's comment comes days after Marcos disclosed that he is open to reconciling with the Dutertes. ''Oo, ako, ayoko ng gulo. Gusto ko magkasundo sa lahat ng tao. Mas maganda. Marami na kong kaaway, hindi ko kailangan ng kaaway, kailangan ko kaibigan,'' Marcos said in an interview with broadcaster Anthony Taberna. (I don't want trouble. I want to get along with everyone. It's better. I already have many enemies, I don't need enemies, I need friends.) READ: Uniteam no more: Timeline of Marcos-Duterte tandem's woes Dad wants to take oath VP Sara was in the Netherlands to visit her father, former President Rodrigo Roa Duterte, who is detained at the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague due to crimes against humanity charges. She said she was able to see her father for an hour on Friday and that they talked about Eleksyon 2025. 'Na-share ko... na nanalo iyong dalawang PDP Laban na senator candidates, tapos iyong isang guest candidate - si (Rodante) Marcoleta, plus dalawang guest candidates from Alyansa, si Senator Camille Villar at Senator Imee Marcos.' (I shared that two PDP Laban senator candidates won, along with guest candidate Rodante Marcoleta and two guest candidates from Alyansa – Senators Camille Villar and Imee Marcos.) She also mentioned that her father wants to take his oath after winning the mayoral race in Davao. 'I want... Set me free and I will take an oath,' Sara said quoting, her father. The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) earlier said it will ask the ICC to allow the former President to take oath as Davao City mayor while he is in detention in The Hague. SWS survey Duterte also addressed the recent Social Weather Stations (SWS) survey in which 88% of respondents said it was important for her to face the impeachment proceedings and answer the allegations. 'Oh, I totally agree. Kasama ako doon sa 88% na iyan... thankful sa opportunity na malinis iyong pangalan ko at masagot iyong mga akusasyon sa akin,' she said. (I totally agree. I'm part of that 88%... I'm thankful for the opportunity to clear my name and respond to the accusations against me.) The Vice President also said that the Senate's decision to move the presentation of the articles of impeachment hearings to June 11 has no effect on her. 'Wala naman siyang epekto sa akin... Iiwan na namin iyan sa mga lawyers namin, sa defense impeachment lawyers,' explained Duterte. (It has no effect on me... we'll leave that to our lawyers, the defense impeachment lawyers.) Imee The Vice President, meanwhile, also mentioned that Senator Imee Marcos, who is also currently at The Hague, was not permitted to visit her father. 'Hindi siya pinayagan ng ICC na makabisita at makausap si dating Pangulong Rodrigoe, she said. (I mentioned that she was not allowed by the ICC to visit and speak with former President Duterte.) Sara said her father was hoping to speak with Senator Marcos, but he is hopeful that there will be "another time." 'Unang-una, nagpasalamat siya. At pangalawa, sabi niya gusto nga daw niya sanang makausap si Senator Imee kaso hindi nga daw payagan pero sabi niya, 'There will be another time for that.'' (He was thankful. He wanted to talk to Senator Imee but wasn't allowed. He said, 'There will be another time for that.) —VAL, GMA Integrated News

Remulla doesn't believe Teves wanted to return to PH
Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla on Friday said he does not believe that former Negros Oriental representative Arnolfo 'Arnie' Teves Jr. wanted to resolve the charges against him in the Philippines while he was in Timor-Leste. Teves, the alleged mastermind in the killing of Negros Oriental governor Roel Degamo, is back in the Philippines after being deported by authorities in Timor-Leste. 'Hindi, ayaw niya lang talaga umuwi,' Remulla said in an ambush interview. (No, he just didn't want to return.) 'In fact, if you analyze everything that happened, nung nangyari 'yan he was abroad. But if he really was innocent, he would have come home. Pwede naman siya umuwi eh, pero hindi siya umuwi, di ba?' he added. (In fact, if you analyze everything that happened, when that happened he was abroad. But if he really was innocent, he would have come home. He could have returned, but he didn't, right?) While being read his Miranda rights during his flight, Teves said that he had no problem with returning to the Philippines as long as it was done right. In an earlier briefing, he also said that while he was in Timor-Leste, he thought that the cases against him must be resolved. 'At least ma-ano na din, matapos na rin. Kahit nung nandoon ako [sa Timor-Leste], iniisip ko kung hindi man ako umuwi. Haharapin— kailangan din ito matapos eh,' Teves said earlier. (At least it will finally be over. Even when I was in Timor-Leste, I was already thinking that even if I didn't return, this still had to be faced and resolved.) Teves was supposedly seeking treatment in the United States during the shooting Degamo and others on March 4, 2023 in Pamplona, Negros Oriental. Instead of returning to the country, Remulla said Teves visited ASEAN countries before settling in Timor-Leste. 'So what gives? Di ba flight is an indication of guilt,' Remulla said. When sought for comment, Topacio declined to comment, saying that Teves never said he wanted to return to the country. In an earlier briefing, Teves reiterated that he was concerned for his life when asked why he stayed in Timor-Leste if he knew that he needed to face the charges against him. The former lawmaker is facing multiple murder charges over the killing of Degamo and nine others on March 4, 2023 at the Degamo residence in Pamplona, Negros Oriental. Teves and others have also been charged with the alleged killings of three individuals in Negros Oriental in 2019. He and 12 others have also been designated as terrorists by the Anti-Terrorism Council, citing several alleged killings and harassment in Negros Oriental. He was expelled by the House of Representatives in August last year for disorderly conduct and continued absence. —AOL, GMA Integrated News
