Meghalaya murder twist? Victim Raja's father says ‘I feel Sonam believes in tantra mantra'

Mint6 hours ago

The father of Meghalaya murder victim Raja Raghuvanshi alleged on Monday that Sonam Raghuvanshi, one of the accused in the case, may have been involved in "tantra mantra" (black magic).
Sonam was Raja Raghuvanshi's wife. Raja's father Ashok Raghuvanshi said, 'On Sonam's behest, Raja hung a bundle-like thing on the main door of our house.'
Sonam had reportedly told Raja that by hanging it, the household will not be affected by any evil eye.
"After Raja's murder, I feel Sonam believes in tantra mantra and she used it on my son. After the murder, this bundle was removed from the house. Those guilty of killing my son should be hanged," the father was quoted by PTI as saying.
Meanwhile, Raja Raghuvanshi's mother Uma said her son and Sonam were "mangliks" (connected to Mars in a person's horoscope) and they got married in the traditional format as per "muhurat" (auspicious time) suggested by an astrologer of the bride's family.
"Sonam stayed at our house for only four days after marriage and went to her maternal home as per tradition. We happily sent her off to her maternal home. If I ever meet her, the only thing I will ask is why did she get my son killed," Uma said.
The couple got married on May 11 and left for Meghalaya for their honeymoon on May 20.
Raja's wife Sonam (25), her alleged lover Raj Kushwah (20) and three friends of Kushwah were arrested for their alleged involvement in the murder. Raja and Sonam had gone missing on May 23 during his honeymoon in Meghalaya.
Raja's body was found on June 2 in a deep gorge near a waterfall in Sohra (also known as Cherrapunji) of East Khasi Hills district.
Days later, Sonam was found at a dhaba (roadside eatery) in Ghazipur, Uttar Pradesh.
Meghalaya DGP Idashisha Nongrang said on Monday the investigators probing the murder of Indore businessman Raja Raghuvanshi in Sohra were not treating the love triangle as the only motive, and they are looking into various other angles.
"We are investigating whether there is anything more to this case. It is unusual that within a few days of marriage, she (Sonam) would develop so much animosity against her husband," Nongrang told PTI.

Vadra skips ED summons again, cites court permission to travel abroad

He was asked to appear on Tuesday (June 17) after he failed to do so on June 10. The federal probe agency may issue him a fresh date after examining his reply. Vadra's lawyer said his client was travelling abroad with the 'prior' permission of the court to attend his daughter's graduation ceremony. New Delhi, Jun 17 (PTI) Robert Vadra, the businessman husband of Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, skipped his scheduled deposition before the Enforcement Directorate for the second time in a money laundering case linked to UK-based arms consultant Sanjay Bhandari, official sources said on Tuesday. The permission to travel (on June 17) was obtained well before the service of the latest summons and an intimation has been sent to the ED also, advocate Suman Jyoti Khaitan said. 'Mr Vadra has repeatedly stated that he is available to extend his fullest cooperation with the ED as he has done on all prior occasions, both upon his return from abroad and also for recording his statement through video conference during his stay abroad if required by them,' he said. The businessman had skipped the June 10 summons saying he had flu-like symptoms on June 9 and had undertaken a Covid test as per protocol. The agency is understood to be summoning Vadra to record his statement under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) and subsequently file a charge sheet in the case. The federal probe agency had questioned the businessman for three consecutive days in April in a separate money laundering case linked to alleged irregularities in a 2008 land deal in Haryana. He is being investigated in three money laundering cases by the ED. Bhandari (63), an alleged associate of Vadra, fled to London in 2016, soon after the Income Tax Department raided him in Delhi. A UK court earlier this month refused an application filed by the Indian government seeking permission to appeal in Britain's Supreme Court against the discharge of Bhandari in an extradition case, virtually ruling out chances of him being brought to the country to face the law. The ED filed a charge sheet in this case in 2023, alleging that Bhandari acquired the 12, Bryanston Square house in London in 2009 and got it renovated 'as per the directions of Robert Vadra, who provided the funds for the renovation'. Vadra has denied that he owns any London property directly or indirectly. Terming the charges a 'political witch hunt', Vadra said he was being 'hounded and harassed' to subserve political ends. The ED is also investigating Vadra in a separate money laundering case linked to alleged financial irregularities in a land deal in Rajasthan's Bikaner. Odisha shocker! College student gang-raped, boyfriend tied up at famed Gopalpur beach; 4 minors among 10 arrested

In a shocking incident, a 20-year-old woman was allegedly gang-raped at the famed Gopalpur beach in Ganjam district of Odisha. Ten people, including four minors, were detained on Tuesday in connection with the incident. According to the police, the heinous incident took place on Sunday night when the woman, an undergraduate student at a private college, went to the beach along with her boyfriend, who is a classmate, on the occasion of the Raja festival. The victim in her complaint alleged that when she and her friend were sitting at an isolated place on the beach, a group of 10 people approached them, rounded up her boyfriend and took turns to rape her. 'Initially, seven people were detained for interrogation. Later, all 10 accused were arrested,' a police officer told PTI. The accused were nabbed while they were trying to flee to another state, he added. SP Saravana Vivek M said: 'While three people raped the woman in turns, seven others were providing them protection.' 'A special police team has been formed to probe the case. Police will request the court to treat the minors as adults as they were involved in a heinous crime,' he said. The woman's medical examination has been conducted. The victim lived in a private mess along with three other women. The horrific incident has sent shockwaves across the state as tourists from far-off places visit the Gopalpur beach. Meanwhile, Odisha Deputy Chief Minister Pravati Parida said she has spoken to SP Saravana Vivek M and has ordered a thorough probe and necessary steps to ensure that such incidents do not take place in future. Leader of the Opposition Naveen Patnaik termed the incident "deeply shocking". "The news of the gang rape at Gopalpur beach, a major tourist destination in Odisha, is deeply shocking and has left everyone shaken. It is strongly condemned. The safety of women in tourist destinations has been questioned," he said. "The government should be vigilant in preventing the increasing atrocities against women every day. The government should take strict steps to ensure the safety and security of women in the state," he added.
