Hi, you're listening to ET Markets Radio, I am your host Neha V Mahajan. Welcome to a fresh episode of ET Market Watch -- where we bring you the latest news from the world of stock markets every single day. Let's get to it:
Markets took a beating today! Sensex down 500 points, Nifty slips below 25,000. So, what triggered the sell-off? Sensex closed at 81,757. Nifty ended at 24,968. ₹2.6 lakh crore in market value wiped out. Broad sell-off across financials, autos, FMCG, and pharma.
Top 5 reasons behind the fall:
1. FIIs Turn Sellers
After strong inflows in May and June, foreign investors pulled out ₹2,660 crore this month. This reversal in trend reflects growing caution amid global uncertainties, elevated valuations, and a shift in risk sentiment.
2. Axis Bank Misses Estimates
Higher provisions hit profits. Stock fell 5.2%. Hence, Ripple effects were seen across HDFC, Kotak, and SBI, pulling the Sensex down by 391 points.
3. Citi Downgrades India
Citi moves India to neutral, citing overvaluation. Market is at 23x forward earnings, way above peers and historic average. While Citi is positive on India's macro outlook, it prefers sectors like banks, NBFCs, healthcare, and telecoms, and is cautious on IT, metals, and consumer staples.
4. Fed Confusion Continues
Conflicting signals from US Fed officials are hinting at no rate cut in July. Even September's not guaranteed. Hence, the market mood is not that great.
5. Oil Prices Surge
Drone strikes in Iraq push Brent to $70+. This is not good news for oil-importing India, so input cost worries are back.
Is this a healthy correction or a warning sign? Let's watch the global cues next week.

Oil prices change little as investors eye impact of new sanctions on Russia

The EU approved on Friday the 18th package of sanctions against Russia over the conflict in Ukraine, which also targeted India's Nayara Energy, an exporter of oil products refined from Russian crude Reuters SINGAPORE Oil prices barely budged on Monday as traders eyed the impact of new European sanctions on Russian oil supply, rising output from Middle East producers and concerns about fuel outlook as tariffs weighed on global economic growth. Brent crude futures rose 5 cents to $69.33 a barrel by 0040 GMT after settling 0.35% lower on Friday. US West Texas Intermediate crude was at $67.36 a barrel, up 2 cents, following a 0.30% decline in the previous session. The European Union approved on Friday the 18th package of sanctions against Russia over the conflict in Ukraine, which also targeted India's Nayara Energy, an exporter of oil products refined from Russian crude. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said on Friday that Russia had built up a certain immunity to Western sanctions. Rosneft, Russia's biggest oil producer with a stake in Nayara, on Sunday criticised the sanctions as unjustified and illegal, saying the restrictions directly threatened India's energy security. Iran, another sanctioned oil producer, is due to hold nuclear talks in Istanbul with Britain, France and Germany on Friday, an Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson said on Monday. That follows warnings by the three European countries that a failure to resume negotiations would lead to international sanctions being reimposed on Iran. In the US, the number of operating oil rigs fell by two to 422 last week, the lowest since September 2021, Baker Hughes said on Friday. Separately, US tariffs on imports from the European Union are set to kick in on August 1, although US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said on Sunday he was confident the United States could secure a trade deal with the bloc.

India bonds seen steady, rate cut bets to be key driver

MUMBAI, July 21 (Reuters) - Indian government bond yields are expected to start the week range-bound as traders continue to look out for major triggers, with eyes on the development of bets on further monetary policy easing from the central bank. The yield on the benchmark 10-year bond is likely to trade between 6.30% and 6.32%, a trader at a private bank said, after closing at 6.3058% on Friday. The five-year 6.75% 2029 bond ended at 5.9665%. "From now until the monetary policy decision, we do not have any major data points, and hence reaction, if any, would be driven by the change in expectations for a rate cut in August," the trader said. The Reserve Bank of India's policy decision is due on August 6, and comes after the central bank slashed key interest rate by 50 basis points in June and changed its stance to neutral from accommodative. India's retail inflation slipped to 2.10% in June, the slowest pace in more than six years, down from 2.82% in May. An estimated drop in inflation to a record low in July is prompting calls for at least one more rate cut this year, with some saying the chances of a rate cut in August cannot be ruled out. "The recent inflation surprise and the comfortable inflation trajectory going ahead have made the August policy live for a rate cut," said Upasna Bhardwaj, chief economist at Kotak Mahindra Bank. Focus would also remain on the RBI's liquidity management after the central bank withdrew 2 trillion rupees ($23.22 billion) through a seven-day variable rate reverse repo on Friday. RATES India's overnight index swap rates (OIS) are also expected to be range-bound amid a lack of strong cues on interest rates. The one-year OIS rate ended at 5.4950% and the two-year OIS rate at 5.47%. The liquid five-year finished at 5.70%. KEY INDICATORS: ** Benchmark Brent crude futures 0.1% higher at $69.35 per barrel after easing 0.4% in the previous session ** Ten-year U.S. Treasury yield at 4.4310%; two-year yield at 3.8750% ** India to buy short-term bonds and sell long-term bonds worth up to 320 billion rupees ($1 = 86.1300 Indian rupees) (Reporting by Dharamraj Dhutia; Editing by Janane Venkatraman)
