HC seeks state reply on plea for quarry survey in Tenkasi

Time of India3 days ago
Madurai: The
Madras high court
on Thursday directed the state government to respond to a plea seeking a survey of rough stone quarries in Tenkasi district.
A division bench of Justice S M Subramaniam and Justice G Arul Murugan issued the directive while hearing a public interest litigation filed by S Jameen of Tenkasi.
The petitioner alleged that several quarries were operating beyond permissible limits, violating licence conditions, and that illegally mined minerals were being transported to Kerala using falsified records and forged permits.
Such activities, he said, harm the environment and cause significant revenue loss to the state. He urged the use of drone technology to assess the extent of quarrying and identify violations. Despite repeated requests from locals, no survey has been conducted so far, the plea stated.

15-year-old held for raping 11-month-old girl in Baghpat

Meerut: A 15-year-old boy was apprehended for raping an 11-month-old girl in Baghpat, police said on Sunday. The girl was medically examined, which confirmed the assault, and the juvenile was later sent to a correctional home. Police said both the girl and the accused live in the same locality. Her father runs a small grocery shop, while the accused's father is a daily wager. On Thursday, the accused took the child to his house to play. He was known to the family and often played with the child, so her parents didn't object. However, on the day of the incident, the girl's cries alerted them. When they rushed to the spot, the parents found the accused sexually assaulting the child and immediately raised an alarm. Villagers caught the accused on the spot and handed him over to the police. Based on the complaint, an FIR under BNS section 65 (rape) and section 5/6 of the Pocso Act was registered. "The child's condition is stable, and further investigation is underway," said investigating officer Ram Kumar Kuntal. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). Ponda councillor gets bail in forged NOCs case

Ponda: A Ponda court granted conditional bail to Ponda municipal councillor Shivanand Sawant, who was arrested on Friday over the forged no-objection certificates (NOCs) case. Sawant has been released on a personal bond with the condition of reporting to the Ponda police station for seven days to assist in the investigation. A complaint was lodged by Ponda Municipal Council (PMC) chief officer Suyash Khandeparkar on Aug 5, alleging forged NOCs issued to Alphia Maria Menezes E Rego, 40, of Silvanagar, Ponda, for water and electricity connections. Ponda police then registered an FIR against her on Aug 9. During the investigation, police found Sawant's involvement and arrested him. This was his second arrest by the Ponda police. On Jan 9, he was held for a forged income certificate. The forged NOCs came to light after a complaint was filed by Silvanagar resident Rozy Martha Rego. Rego alleged that the certificates, purportedly signed by then Municipal Engineer Uday Desai, were created to secure electricity and water connections to her house. Ponda police registered an offence under sections 318(4), 336(2), 336(3) and 340(2) of BNS, 2023. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI).
