Village pradhan among 4 booked for distributing ‘non-veg' biryani to flood-affected people

A village pradhan and his two sons, along with another person, have been booked for allegedly distributing packets of 'non-vegetarian' biryani to flood affected people in Farrukhabad on the day of the Janmashtami festival on Saturday, when several residents were observing a fast. The matter came to light after some local residents raised objections and informed the police, an officer said on Monday. He said heavy rainfall had led to flooding in the village and nearby areas. It has been alleged that when villagers objected to being served biryani without being informed that it contained meat, the village pradhan, Mohammad Shami, verbally abused them. Circle Officer, Fatehgarh, Rajesh Kumar Dwivedi said three persons including Shami and his son, have been arrested in the case. Efforts are being made to trace the fourth accused, Dwivedi said. Shami is the elected pradhan of Raipur Chinhatpur village. The CO added that the village pradhan and others had gone to distribute food packets among the flood-affected residents. According to the police, a local resident filed a complaint on Sunday alleging that Shami, along with three associates, including his sons Saif Ali and Talib Ali, distributed biryani packets to flood victims. Since it was Janmashtami, many villagers were observing a fast. After accepting the packets, some people began eating the biryani, but soon found 'pieces of meat' in it. When they objected and confronted the pradhan, instead of addressing their concern, he allegedly abused them and remarked that many Hindus now consume meat. The complainant further alleged that people from different communities were threatened and told either to eat the biryani or throw it away. He added that the incident deeply hurt the religious sentiments of many villagers, particularly those who were fasting. During the preliminary inquiry, it was revealed that after the floods, several members of the minority community had gathered at a spot in the village, where the village pradhan distributed the packets. A few of these packets were also given to members of another community, which led to tension, a police officer said. Subsequently, villagers staged a protest demanding the registration of an FIR in the matter. The police registered an FIR at the Kampil police station against Shami, his sons Saif Ali and Talib Ali, and one Mohammad Sami alias Mustafa. The case has been lodged under BNS section 196 (Promoting enmity between different group), 352 (– Intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace), 351 (criminal intimidation).

Offence of sexually assaulting a minor can be alleged even against a woman, rules Karnataka High Court

Declaring that the offence of penetrative sexual assault can be alleged even against a woman under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012, as this law is gender-neutral, the High Court of Karnataka on Monday refused to quash a criminal case against a 52-year-old woman, who allegedly compelled a 13-year-old boy for sex with her at her residence here during 2020. The two instances of sexual assaults had allegedly taken place between May and June, 2020, when the accused woman Archana, an artist aged around 48 and the boy who was around 13 years and 10 months old then. The accused, who was the boy's neighbour, had come in contact with him through his mother, who initially sent him to the house of the accused to help her post her paintings on her Instagram account following the request made by the accused. To a therapist The boy, who was psychologically distressed, had immediately not disclosed the alleged acts to his parents, who later decided to settle down in Dubai and shifted there in August, 2020, along with him and his younger sister. He disclosed the alleged acts only in 2024 and narrated details to a therapist in Dubai, and then the complaint was lodged with the HAL police station by the boy's mother in June, 2024. The boy was aged around 17 when his statements were recorded by the magistrate and the child protection officer. It was alleged that accused woman had convinced the boy not to disclose the acts with anyone, stating that both of them would be in trouble. The accused woman's husband and daughter are said to be living abroad. Against woman also Rejecting the argument on behalf of the accused that offence of aggravated sexual assaults or rape cannot be invoked against a woman, the court pointed out that Sections 4 and 6 of the POCSO Act makes it clear that anyone who 'compels a minor child to do penetrative or other sexual acts with him or other persons', is an offender. Though the pronoun 'he' and its derivatives were not defined under the POCSO Act, which only states that a child is any person below the age of 18, Justice M. Nagaprasanna, relying on the definitions in the Indian Penal Code (IPC), held that the pronoun 'he' and its derivatives in POCSO will also have to be used, 'of any person, whether male or female.' 'The language of the provision clearly indicates inclusivity,' the court observed. It was argued on behalf of the accused that the victim boy could not have had an erection if he was in shock when the accused had allegedly made sexual advances. However, the court said, quoting a study, 'State of shock is a psychological concept. Erection is purely a physiological or a biological concept. Psychological concepts would not sometimes control physiological and biological actions.' No stereotypes To the submission that in an intercourse the woman is only a passive participant and a man is an active participant, the court pointed out that 'this thought itself is archaic'. It said that the jurisprudence of the present times 'does not allow stereotypes to cloud legal scrutiny'. The delay of four years in registering the complaint and non-conduct of potency test of the boy, cannot become the reason for quashing the case, owing to the alleged offence and the age of the victim boy, the court said.

Cyber frauds cheat unemployed woman looking for marriage and a job

Promising a job and a life partner, cyber frauds cheated a 32-year-old unemployed commerce graduate and made away with ₹34 lakh in a span of one year . The victim sourced the money from her mother's account without her consent, took gold loans and personal loans, and sold Euros which she had saved, to fund the money demanded by the accused as security deposit to issue the letter of appointment. Based on her complaint, the East Division Cyber Crime Police on Thursday registered an FIR against unknown people charging them under various section of IT act and also under cheating by deception and dishonest inducement under BNS for further investigation. According to the complaint, the victim had registered on a matrimonial website for an alliance and was also looking for a job in July last year. The victim got a call from a person who identified himself as Dashmeet Singh Bindra, residing in New Delhi and offered to help with employment. Claiming to have contacts with a reputed company's HR, he later connected the victim with one Rahul Khanna, who he introduced as an HR head, who claimed there was a vacancy in a company, and initiated further communication regarding a job opportunity as Ground Wing Manager at the Delhi airport. The victim was asked to make multiple payments under the pretext of completing necessary formalities for employment, including security allowance, accommodation charges, and joining processing fee. Based on their assurances, she made payments in smaller transactions from July 2024 to January 2025, totalling ₹34 lakhs. Later, in October 2024, she received a joining letter along with a cheque as an advance for accommodation and job-related allowances. However, shortly after, she discovered that the cheque was invalid and got bounced, she questioned the 'HR', who claimed that the cheque had bounced due to a signature mismatch. The 'HR' contact became unreachable from March, 2025, but contacted her recently claiming that her earlier payments could be refunded after the payment of an additional 'tax amount', she alleged. The cheating came to light when the victim in March 2025 contacted her brother and shared the offer letter and other related documents, who confirmed all these letters are fake and suggested lodging an official complaint. The police are now trying to locate the accused based on their contact details .
