SAD's Majithia arrested in assets case
Chandigarh, June 25 (UNI) Shiromani Akali Dal leader Bikram Singh Majithia was today arrested in a disproportionate assets case after the state Vigilance Bureau raided his Amritsar house. The former Punjab minister was present in the house at the time of the raid and confronted officials alleging that they had "barged into his house." Ruling Aam Aadmi Party spokesman said the raids were being conducted at 25 places across Punjab under the 'war against drugs' campaign and that if Majithia had done no wrong, he should not fear. Besides SAD, opposition parties like BJP and Congress have come out in support of Majithia, alleging that it was a case of political vendetta. BJP leader and Union Minister of State for Railways Ravneet Singh Bittu said that the "misuse" of VB by Bhagwant Singh Mann's government was a sign of shallow politics. He compared it to the Emergency imposed in 1975. Bholath MLA and Congress leader Sukhpal Singh Khaira said that Punjab has become a police state. BJP staging drama on Emergency to hide governance failure: Kharge
An undeclared emergency prevailed in the country, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge alleged on Wednesday (June 25, 2025) while accusing the BJP of staging a Samvidhan Hatya Diwas "drama" to hide its governance failure. Hitting back at Prime Minister Narendra Modi over his jibes on the 50th anniversary of the Emergency, he said a government which has no tolerance and does not allow fraternity and liberty to prosper has no right to lecture others. The same people are now talking of saving the Constitution, he added. Slamming Prime Minister Modi, Mr. Kharge said the Constitution is in danger because of him and his governance. The Congress chief also alleged that there is no freedom of expression and movement under the Modi government. "Those (BJP-RSS) people who are talking of Samvidhan bachao are now raking up the Emergency after 50 years. It was something people had forgotten and they are now raking it up," he said. Mr. Kharge said that the BJP-RSS had rejected the Constitution and stated that it did not have our cultural aspects, such as elements of the Manusmriti. "They (BJP-RSS) did all this and have now been suddenly enlightened." According to the Congress chief, the BJP is rattled by the Congress' Samvidhan Bachao Yatra and is therefore raking up the Emergency of 50 years ago. The government marks the Emergency anniversary as Samvidhan Hatyas Diwas, or Constitution Murder Day. "These people failed in governance, and their failure is such that people are concerned over inflation, the government has no answer to unemployment, corruption and economic failure. To hide their lies and failure, they have staged this drama," Mr. Kharge said. He said economic inequalities have widened so much that they cannot be bridged. "You have brought in an undeclared emergency," the Congress president said. He also slammed the government over its handling of the situation in Manipur.

Not happy with outsourcing of works, CM Majhi seeks review
BHUBANESWAR: Amid the allegations over rising dependence on private agencies for core engineering works in government projects, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has directed the chief secretary to conduct an in-depth review of all outsourcing practices adopted by engineering departments in the last 10 years. In a strongly worded note (accessed by TNIE), the chief minister has flagged that engineering departments, which traditionally carry out surveys, investigations, project designs, cost estimates and preparation of detailed project reports (DPRs) using in-house expertise, have increasingly resorted to outsourcing these responsibilities to private firms. This trend, he stated, has been observed even in the case of minor infrastructure projects that could have easily been executed by government engineers. Emphasising that departments such as Works, Rural Development, Water Resources, and Housing and Urban Development have well-established technical wings with qualified and experienced engineers, Majhi questioned why such expertise was being sidelined. 'Earlier, the government engineers used to undertake these tasks diligently. The current outsourcing trend raises serious questions about the under-utilisation of the capabilities of government departments and the justification behind increasing project costs,' read the note. The CM has asked the chief secretary to submit a detailed report within a month outlining which departments have outsourced technical works in the last 10 years, the nature of the works outsourced and the private companies engaged, besides the financial outlay involved in these assignments. He also wanted to know whether the departments, or any other state government agencies, were capable of doing the same work and measures needed to empower them to execute such work in-house, including training and procurement of modern equipment. While the BJP-led government has started initiating a probe into the alleged practice, insiders pointed out that the practice of engaging external consultants and private agencies gained significant traction during the previous government. 'The use of project management units (PMUs) and technical consultants had become institutionalised across various departments under the earlier regime. Although these arrangements were often justified as a means to augment capacity and expedite execution, it gradually eroded departmental accountability and suppressed in-house expertise,' they alleged.
