UFC fight descends into bloodbath as both fighters are left unrecognizable in Las Vegas

Daily Mail3 days ago
UFC stars Chris Duncan and Mateusz Rebecki were left unrecognizable after their co-main event descended into a bloodbath on Saturday night.
The lightweight stars faced off at UFC Vegas 108 and made sure to give fight fans their money's worth as they viciously battled throughout their three-round bout.
Heading into the fight, Scottish star Duncan was the bookie's underdog but you'd be forgiven for thinking otherwise given Rebecki's state by the end of the fight.
The Polish fighter was left disfigured, bloody and bruised after being on the receiving end of a striking clinic from his Scottish counterpart.
It was enough to earn Duncan a unanimous decision victory, however, some would argue that the Scottish star hardly 'won' given the brutal damage he also suffered.
The 32-year-old had nasty cuts across his face - including one deep gash right below his left eye that appeared to cause him some concern during the fight.
However, in the end, Duncan battled through and it was Rebecki who wore the scars of defeat upon his face come the final bell.
Notably, Rebecki's right eye had become incredibly swollen throughout the fight and the Polish star was hardly able to see out of it by the final round.
The judges scored it 29-28, 29-28, 30-27 in Duncan's favor, which saw him extend his professional MMA record to 14-2 - in one of the biggest upsets of the night.
The bout was so thrilling that it caught the attention of a number of prominent names within the UFC. Recently retired star Dustin Poirier wrote: 'Bravo men!! What a WAR!! You both should be proud'.
Though it may be hard to believe, prior to their fight in Vegas, Duncan and Rebecki were teammates and both trained with American Top Team.
Speaking ahead of the bout, Rebecki revealed: 'For me, it's difficult. We live together. He lived behind my wall. It's a funny situation because nobody in the world has that situation.
'You have teammate and an opponent in a place where you live. It's hard for your mind, but you can be better because you see how he trained.
'If you rest, your opponent go to training. When I see he go training and running, I want to do more. A couple minutes more running or go earlier to sleep.
'Do more than him. It's motivation. Stressful of course, but I didn't want to fight with him because he is my teammate.'
In the end, it wasn't meant to be for Rebecki on the night and the pre-fight favorite picked up another loss - moving his record to 20-3.
The gruesome scenes comes just a week after one fighter was left with gruesome injuries at UFC Abu Dhabi.
UFC fighter Mohammad Yahya suffered a horrifying eye injury which saw it swell up to the size of a tennis ball after a brutal beatdown from Steven Nguyen.
The 32-year-old knocked down his rival six times, smashing the record for total number of knockdowns in a single fight in the championship's history.
The previous record of five was shared by Jeremy Stephens (who defeated Gilbert Melendez in 2017) and Forrest Petz (who defeated Sammy Morgan in 2006).

Trump to announce White House taskforce for 2028 LA Olympics

Donald Trump is expected to announce on Tuesday that he will create a White House taskforce to oversee elements of the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles. The president is set to sign an executive order establishing the taskforce, which will include cabinet members and government officials and will handle security and transportation on the first Games in the US in nearly three decades. The announcement comes after a summer of political clashes between the administration and Los Angeles leaders. 'During his first term, President Trump was instrumental in securing America's bid to host the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. The president considers it a great honor to oversee this global sporting spectacle in his second term,' Karoline Leavitt, the White House press secretary, said in a statement. With the Olympics just three years away, the city has been rushing to prepare for the Games, which are expected to attract millions of people over the course of 16 days. City leaders have been in what the Los Angeles Times described as 'high-stakes' negotiations with LA28, the committee managing the event, over the use of city staff, including police officers. Meanwhile, a proposed ballot measure could require some Olympic venues to receive approval from voters in order to be used. Meanwhile, Los Angeles has been through a tense standoff with the Trump administration, including over aggressive immigration raids in the region and the deployment of US troops into the city over the objection of city and state leaders. The International Olympic Committee president, Thomas Bach, has expressed confidence in the 'strong' city and said the games have the support of US leaders. 'With regard to LA, we have the full support of the president of the United States and the governor of California and the mayor of Los Angeles for the success of these Olympic Games,' Bach told the Associated Press in June. Trump has frequently touted his support for hosting the games in Los Angeles. His recent budget bill allocates $1bn for security, planning and other Olympic-related costs. In a statement to the Hollywood Reporter, which broke the news, the chairperson and president of LA28 expressed 'deep appreciation' to the administration for their 'unwavering support'. Report: Sun deal never presented to WNBA board

August 5 - A $325 million offer to purchase the WNBA's Connecticut Sun was agreed to by both buyer and seller in July but the league never presented the details to the WNBA board of governors for approval, Front Office Sports reported Tuesday. The prospective purchase of the Sun by Boston Celtics minority owner Steve Pagliuca, from Connecticut's Mohegan Tribe, remains in limbo. Pagliuca has expressed the desire to move the team to larger arenas in New England and vowed to invest in a $110 million practice facility. The desired relocation site is believed to be Boston. Details of the agreed-to sale reportedly made their way to WNBA commissioner Kathy Engelbert but never to the board, which signs off on all ownership changes. With the deal not approved during an "exclusivity" time period of less than a month, at least one other party has emerged as a potential buyer of the franchise, which the Mohegan Tribe purchased for $10 million in 2023 and relocated from Orlando to Uncasville, Conn. After Pagliuca made his interest in purchasing the Sun known, Front Office Sports reported this week, through a statement from the WNBA, that nothing has been approved and that relocation is decided by the board "and not by individual teams." The WNBA also noted that in the recent process to select Cleveland, Detroit and Philadelphia as future cities for expansion, there was no interest from a potential ownership group in Boston. Based on that lack of interest, the league seemed to suggest that Boston is not a target market at the current time. "No groups from Boston applied for a team at that time and those other cities remain under consideration based on the extensive work they did as part of the expansion process and currently have priority over Boston," the league's statement said. In June, Engelbert expressed a hope for the league to move back into the Houston market saying, "Houston would be up next for sure." Sun president Jen Rizzotti spoke about the team's potential sale on Sunday. "I can't speak to where the team is going to go," Rizzotti told reporters. "But if Boston was an option, it's hard to argue that they're not a city that's viable for a WNBA franchise." --Field Level Media

Phillies' Jose Alvarado sorry as he nears return from 80-game ban

August 5 - Philadelphia Phillies reliever Jose Alvarado apologized to his team and its fans Tuesday as he nears his return from an 80-game suspension for testing positive for a performance-enhancing substance. Alvarado wrote on Instagram that he did not intend to take a banned substance and is "fully aware that using prohibited substances is wrong." "I made a mistake and therefore, I have faced the consequences set forth by MLB," he wrote. "Going forward, my focus is on working hard to help the team win." Alvarado was suspended on May 18 after he tested positive for exogenous testosterone. The left-hander is eligible to return to the Phillies on Aug. 19, however he is not eligible to pitch in the playoffs. "Once again, I offer my deepest apologies to the Phillies organization, my teammates, my family, my country Venezuela, the City of Philadelphia and the fans who have always supported me, especially the children and young people," Alvarado said. "There is always a lesson to be learned in every mistake." Alvarado, 30, is 4-1 with seven saves and a 2.70 ERA in 20 relief appearances this season. He has 25 strikeouts versus four walks over 20 innings. Alvarado is 19-26 with 52 saves and a 3.40 ERA in 400 career games (one start) with the Tampa Bay Rays (2017-20) and Phillies. The Phillies (64-48) entered play on Tuesday holding a 1 1/2-game lead over the second-place New York Mets (63-50) in the National League East. Philadelphia acquired closer Jhoan Duran from the Minnesota Twins prior to the trade deadline last week. The right-hander recorded saves in each of his first two appearances with his new team. --Field Level Media
