We might be wrong about the color of Mars, scientists say
Earthlings have known about the existence of Mars, the fourth planet from the sun it also orbits, since ancient times.
Although the celestial body is located 140 million miles away from Earth, there's a lot that astronomers know about it. For example, it's a dusty red color.
But, new research from the European Space Agency is challenging humanity's understanding of why Mars is called the Red Planet.
'Mars is still the Red Planet. It's just that our understanding of why Mars is red has been transformed,' said Adomas Valantinas, a post-doctoral fellow at Brown University, said in a statement.
Valantinas is the lead author of the findings published Tuesday in the journal Nature Communications.
The red dust on Mars is mostly rust. The iron minerals in the soil rusted, similar to how rust forms on Earth. Known as iron oxide, the material has been broken down and spread all around Mars by Martian wind. It's a process that has happened for billions of years, and is still happening today.
But, the exact chemical make up of the iron oxide has been debated in recent years. Previous observations did not find evidence of water contained within the iron oxide. So, researchers had posited that the type of iron oxide much have been the mineral hematite and formed under dry surface conditions through reactions with the planet's atmosphere over billions of years – following its early wet period.
Using spacecraft observations and new lab techniques, scientists now say that the red color is better suited to iron oxides that contain water. That mineral is known as ferrihydrite, which forms in the presence of cool water.
'We were trying to create a replica martian dust in the laboratory using different types of iron oxide. We found that ferrihydrite mixed with basalt, a volcanic rock, best fits the minerals seen by spacecraft at Mars,' said Valantinas.
But, because ferrihydrite could only have formed when water was still present on the surface, the researcher said Mars rusted earlier than they previously thought.
'Moreover, the ferrihydrite remains stable under present-day conditions on Mars,' he noted.
The replica Martian dust was created using an advanced grinder, grinding the dust to the equivalent of one-one-hundredth of a human hair. They analyzed the samples using the same techniques as orbiting spacecraft. They used data from the agency's Trace Gas Orbiter, NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, and rover data to determine particle size and composition to create the right size dust in the lab.
Newly-collected samples will help them to learn more down the line. Although, they may have to wait a few years before they can come back to Earth.
'Some of the samples already collected by NASA's Perseverance rover and awaiting return to Earth include dust; once we get these precious samples into the lab, we'll be able to measure exactly how much ferrihydrite the dust contains, and what this means for our understanding of the history of water – and the possibility for life – on Mars,' Colin Wilson, Trace Gas Orbiter and Mars Express project scientist, said.

With just a splash of color, the red planet's horizons can look remarkably like our own – blue skies and all. A 360-degree panorama, taken by the Perseverance Rover on Mars, could just as easily have been snapped in a rocky desert somewhere here on Earth. The difference lies in a subtle tweak to the color contrast. The hope is that one day, these new-and-improved rovers will join Perseverance, Opportunity, and Curiosity on Mars to accomplish similar feats. But seeing the red planet through an Earthly lens is like wearing rose-tinted glasses. It sure looks promising, but as you can see from the natural-color version of the image, there's a lot that sets Mars apart from the Atacama. As the fourth planet from the Sun, Mars receives less than half of the sunlight that Earth does, and the volume of its atmosphere is less than 1 percent of that of Earth's atmosphere. Whether remnants of ancient life can exist under such hostile and destructive conditions remains to be seen… possibly with Percy's own two eyes. NASA to unveil last piece of hardware for the Artemis II Orion mission
Aug. 12 (UPI) -- NASA is ready to show off its final piece of space flight hardware for the Space Launch System rocket for the Artemis II mission. NASA has invited media to the Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Ala., to see the piece. The rest of the SLS rocket for Artemis II is stacked on mobile launcher 1 at Kennedy. Artemis II, NASA's first mission with crew aboard the Orion spacecraft, is scheduled for a 10-day trip around the moon in April 2026. The Orion stage adapter, built by NASA Marshall, connects the SLS rocket's interim cryogenic propulsion stage to NASA's Orion spacecraft. The small ring structure is the topmost portion of the SLS rocket. The adapter will also carry small payloads, called CubeSats, to deep space. Through Artemis, NASA will send astronauts to explore the moon for scientific discovery, economic benefits, and build the foundation for the first crewed missions to Mars, NASA said. That lunar flyby mission carrying four astronauts is set for launch in April 2026. It's a flight test mission that will pave the way for landing the first woman and the next man on the moon. Onboard will be Commader Reid Wiseman, Pilot Victor Glover, and mission specialists Christina Koch and Jeremy Hansen. Wiseman, Glover and Koch are NASA astronauts. Hansen is from the Canadian Space Agency. According to Artemis mission manager Mike Sarafin, Artemis II builds on the uncrewed Artemis I flight test. "This mission will prove Orion's critical life support systems are ready to sustain our astronauts on longer duration missions ahead and allow the crew to practice operations essential to the success of Artemis III," Sarafin said in a statement.

NASA's Perseverance rover captures image on Mars that resembles a helmet
NASA's Perseverance rover has added to its trove of curious finds, as the space agency published a photo of a rock on the surface of Mars that looks like a centuries-old helmet. The rock has a pointed peak, a flared "brim," and textures that could lead reasonable observers to compare it to a witch's hat or a tent. The texture is formed by spherules on the rock. Similar formations found on Earth are created through chemical weathering, mineral precipitation or volcanic processes, according to The image, taken Aug. 5 by the rover's Left Mastcam-Z camera, was chosen as the photo of the week for week 234 of its mission on Mars. "This rock's target name is Horneflya and it's distinctive less because of its hat shape (which looks to me to be generally consistent with the pyramid shape we often see in of wind-eroded float blocks on the surface of Mars) and more because it's made almost entirely of spherules," David Agle, a spokesperson for the Perseverance team at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, told the space news outlet. It is not the first time the rover has found a spherule-covered rock, having sent back a photo of a studded rock in March. Camera key to Mars discoveries The Left Mastcam-Z camera on the Perseverance can capture panoramic color and 3D images of the planet's surface, according to NASA, allowing scientists and observers to see Martian features more clearly. The rover is searching for signs of ancient microbial life as a part of a larger undertaking to understand the habitability of Mars. The helmet rock provides scientist a clue on what Mar's environmental history, according to Perseverance was sent to survey Jezero Crater to study the "wet history" of the Red Planet. The rover completed the climb to the summit of the crater in December 2024, three years after landing. "Conceivably, microbial life could have lived in Jezero during one or more of these wet times," NASA says on the home page for the mission. "If so, signs of their remains might be found in lakebed or shoreline sediments." Perseverance's research is intended to pave the way for humans to reach Mars in the years ahead under NASA's Artemis program, which will begin with astronauts returning to the moon to establish a base of operations. SpaceX founder and CEO Elon Musk has also expressed his vision of launching uncrewed trips to the Red Planet before humans reach it ‒ perhaps as early as 2028.
