KDEBWM targets 80% use of Euro-5 lorries for cleaning operations by year-end

The Sun29-04-2025

KLANG: KDEB Waste Management (KDEBWM) is targeting 80 per cent use of environmentally friendly Euro 5-spec roll-on-roll-off (RORO) trucks for cleaning operations in Selangor by the end of this year.
KDEBWM managing director Datuk Ramli Mohd Tahir said the company was set to receive 47 vehicles next month, with operations to begin immediately in areas under the Selayang Municipal Council (MPS) and several other local authorities (PBT).
'So far, we have received six Euro 5 RORO lorries, and the remaining units are expected to arrive next month.
'Generally, asset assessments are carried out every five to six years, and based on current developments, KDEBWM has decided that this model is the most suitable,' he told reporters after the handover ceremony of the first batch of Fuso trucks here today.
Ramli said the use of the model helped minimise nitrogen oxide (NOx) and carbon emissions, provided efficient fuel consumption without compromising engine performance, and added value to cleaning operations in Selangor.
He said KDEBWM was operating with 1,400 units of machinery, including RORO and compactor lorries, and that the company remained committed to promoting greener operations in line with the government's goal of making Malaysia a carbon-neutral country by 2050.
'We hope that with the conversion to this new model chassis, we can reduce at least 30 to 40 per cent of the carbon dioxide emitted by the old chassis,' he said.
Previously, Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Minister Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad was reported as saying that Malaysia would begin implementing the use of Euro 5 petrol in September 2025, with full compliance expected by 2027, as a long-term measure to preserve the country's air quality.

Georgia to shutter EU and NATO information centre as ties with West fray

FILE PHOTO: Supporters of Georgia's opposition parties hold a rally to protest against the result of a recent parliamentary election won by the ruling Georgian Dream party, in Tbilisi, Georgia November 4, 2024. REUTERS/Irakli Gedenidze/File Photo TBILISI (Reuters) -The Georgian government is to close its information centre on NATO and the European Union, Georgian media reported on Wednesday, citing the country's foreign ministry, amid souring ties between Tbilisi and the West. According to its website, the information centre aims "to engage our population in Georgia's European and Euro-Atlantic integration processes and to gain their well-informed support". The centre, opened in 2005, is based in a large building on Freedom Square in downtown Tbilisi and flies the flags of the EU, the NATO military alliance and Georgia. Georgia's Interpress news agency reported that the centre is to be merged into the foreign ministry and that some staff have been told they are to be dismissed. The ministry did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment. Georgia has been an EU candidate member since 2023, while NATO said in 2008 that the mountainous country of 3.6 million would eventually join the alliance. But though once among the most pro-Western and democratic of the Soviet Union's successor states, Georgia's government has in recent years moved to clamp down on domestic critics, while also rebuilding ties with former imperial overlord, Russia. Bidzina Ivanishvili, a billionaire ex-prime minister widely seen as Georgia's de facto leader, has said the EU and NATO are controlled by a shadowy "global war party" that seeks to topple the government and drag his country into war with Russia. Ivanishvili's Georgian Dream party in November 2024 paused EU accession talks until 2028, abruptly halting a popular national goal that is written into the country's constitution. The EU has said Tbilisi's application has been frozen over laws on "foreign agents" and LGBT rights that Brussels has criticised as restrictive and influenced by Russian policies . Georgian Dream says it still wants to eventually join the EU and NATO, but that it also wants to keep the peace with its huge northern neighbour, as well as preserve the country's traditional Christian values. The United States imposed sanctions on Ivanishvili last December, accusing him of dismantling Georgian democracy in the interests of Russia. Tbilisi and Moscow have had no formal diplomatic ties since 2008, when Russia defeated Georgia in a brief war over two Moscow-backed separatist regions. European shares rise on defence boost, EU tariff reprieve

EUROPEAN shares extended gains on Tuesday, led by defence stocks after U.S. President Donald Trump threatened additional sanctions on Russia, while relief from the reversal of tariffs on the region continued to boost sentiment. The continent-wide STOXX 600 index rose 0.5% as of 0835 GMT. The benchmark closed 1% higher in the previous session after Trump extended the tariff deadline on the European Union to July 9 from June 1 to allow for talks between Washington and the 27-nation bloc. Trump's Friday tariff announcement on the European Union had sparked extreme selling pressures across the global markets. 'The performance that we've seen over the last three days does suggest that markets no longer believe that Trump is serious about tariffs,' said Daniela Hathorn, senior market analyst at 'But at the end of the day they (tariff announcements) are still affecting sentiment and that's going to mean that markets do remain cautious going forward.' The latest flip-flop on EU tariffs highlights the unpredictability of Trump's trade policies that have been shaking investor confidence in the U.S. economy and have put pressure on the U.S. dollar. This phenomenon, coupled with the country's increasing fiscal challenges, is pushing investors away from U.S. assets to find other safe havens internationally. On the day, Europe's defence index jumped 1.4% after Trump said he would recommend additional sanctions on Moscow, amid escalating tensions between Russia and Ukraine. 'Defence stocks have become the new value stocks, in the sense that it is a place where investors now feel comfortable to retreat to,' Hathorn said. Financial services rose 1.1%, while industrials added 0.95% to boost the main index. Euro zone government bond yields dipped on the day, lifting real estate by 0.9%. In Germany, the DAX 40 hit a record high and was last up 0.4%. A recent survey indicated consumer sentiment is set to improve slightly heading into June, though cautious household spending may limit a robust recovery in Europe's largest economy. Britain's FTSE 100 jumped 1% as investors returned following a holiday on Monday. French benchmark index CAC 40 nudged up 0.1% after preliminary data showed inflation fell to its lowest level since December 2020 in May. Prime Minister Francois Bayrou said he will unveil proposals in early July to get public finances under control, adding that 'everyone will have to make an effort'. Shares in FLSmidth rose 4.3% after Goldman Sachs raised the mining and cement technology supplier's rating to 'buy' from 'neutral' on expectations of higher margins.
