KDEB Waste Management pledges to improve service delivery in Kajang
PETALING JAYA: KDEB Waste Management (KDEBWM) has pledged to improve its service delivery in Kajang after being fined RM35,000 by the local authority. Kajang Municipal Council (MPKj) president Nazli Md Taib had announced the fine during the council's full board meeting on Thursday (July 24), citing a number of factors, including damaged roll-on, roll-off (Ro-Ro) bins and malfunctioning lorry compactors. KDEBWM, in a statement, acknowledged the ongoing disruptions to the collection schedule. Managing director Datuk Ramli Mohd Tahir also expressed his appreciation to the residents of Kajang for their patience at this challenging time. 'The primary issue stems from our ageing fleet, as most lorries have reached the end of their operational lifespan after nearly seven years of continuous service since our contract with MPKj started in July 2018. "The current state of the fleet has led to frequent breakdowns and mechanical issues, further compounding delays,' he said. To mitigate the impact, Rami said several short-term solutions have been implemented. 'We have engaged additional backup compactor lorries, though availability remains insufficient to fully cover the gaps. We are also deploying backup Ro-Ro lorries to supplement collection efforts. We will be actively seeking more backup resources to improve coverage in the interim,' he said. For a permanent resolution, KDEBWM will introduce 92 new compactor lorries, significantly expanding its capacity by Sept 1 to service 92 zones, which is an increase from the current 59. At the same time, KDEBWM voiced concerns on the poor road conditions at Jalan Langat Lestari, the main access road leading to the Tanjung Duabelas Sanitary Landfill in Kuala Langat. Ownership of the 11km stretch of road leading to the landfill is shared between Worldwide Holdings Bhd and Selangor Public Works Department (JKR). While the final 3km leading to the landfill has been kept in good condition, the remaining 8km stretch is filled with numerous craters and potholes, making for a rough ride for KDEBWM's lorries during its daily trips. Nazli, during the council meeting, did not discount that bad road conditions near Tanjung Dua Belas Sanitary Landfill were a contributing factor. 'However, malfunctioning compactor trucks will cease to be an issue after Aug 1 as we have entered into a new interim agreement with KDEB where their contractors will have to acquire new compactors,' he said.

KDEBWM uncovers five illegal waste dumping hotspots in Kuala Langat
KUALA LANGAT: KDEB Waste Management (KDEBWM) has identified five locations, each spanning two to four hectares, being used as illegal dumping sites in several areas within the Kuala Langat district. Its managing director, Datuk Ramli Mohd Tahir, said the district has become a hotspot for large-scale illegal dumping due to its proximity to the Tanjung Dua Belas landfill. "Among the identified locations are Johan Setia, Sijangkang, Bukit Changgang, Telok Panglima Garang, Tanjung Dua Belas, and land lots near the sea. We believe these activities are carried out by people from outside Kuala Langat. "I suspect this is done by external parties, including factories, because all waste management tenders in this district are handled by KDEBWM, and we constantly monitor the schedule and movement of every truck to ensure waste is disposed of in the correct places," he told reporters at the Kuala Langat Municipal Council (MPKL) headquarters here today. Ramli said that KDEBWM, in collaboration with MPKL, has tried to curb this issue, including the collection of commercial and institutional industrial waste, over the past three years. However, it continues to occur and proliferate each year. In this regard, Ramli said the contract extension between KDEBWM and MPKL until July 2032 will serve as a stepping stone for both parties to work together in planning new approaches to address the illegal dumping problem in the Kuala Langat district. "As an initial step today, KDEBWM launched 25 units of 19-tonne compactor trucks, two 7.5-tonne mini compactors, and one arm roll truck equipped with roll-on roll-off (RoRo) bins, with an allocation totaling RM12 million for waste collection throughout the district. "The management of illegal waste falls outside KDEBWM's scope, but if there's a request from the District and Land Office, I have no problem mobilising available assets to clean up the affected areas with the assistance of MPKL," he said. Earlier, Ramli, accompanied by MPKL President Mohd Hasry Nor Mohd, officiated the launch of the Compactor Trucks and New KDEBWM Image at the MPKL headquarters compound here. - BERNAMA

Five illegal waste dumping sites found in Kuala Langat by KDEBWM
KUALA LANGAT: KDEB Waste Management (KDEBWM) has uncovered five illegal waste dumping sites in Kuala Langat, each spanning two to four hectares. The areas affected include Johan Setia, Sijangkang, Bukit Changgang, Telok Panglima Garang, and Tanjung Dua Belas. Datuk Ramli Mohd Tahir, Managing Director of KDEBWM, stated that the district has become a hotspot for illegal dumping due to its proximity to the Tanjung Dua Belas landfill. 'We suspect external parties, including factories, are involved since all waste management tenders in Kuala Langat are handled by us,' he said during a press conference at the Kuala Langat Municipal Council (MPKL) headquarters. Despite efforts over the past three years, illegal dumping continues to escalate. To address this, KDEBWM and MPKL have extended their contract until July 2032, aiming to implement new strategies. As part of immediate action, KDEBWM launched 25 new 19-tonne compactor trucks, two 7.5-tonne mini compactors, and an arm roll truck with roll-on roll-off (RoRo) bins, costing RM12 million. While illegal waste management is not under KDEBWM's jurisdiction, Ramli assured cooperation with authorities to clean up affected areas if requested. The event was officiated by Ramli and MPKL President Datuk Amirul Azizan Abd Rahim at the MPKL headquarters.
