KDEB Waste Management pledges to improve service delivery in Kajang

The Star25-07-2025
PETALING JAYA: KDEB Waste Management (KDEBWM) has pledged to improve its service delivery in Kajang after being fined RM35,000 by the local authority.
Kajang Municipal Council (MPKj) president Nazli Md Taib had announced the fine during the council's full board meeting on Thursday (July 24), citing a number of factors, including damaged roll-on, roll-off (Ro-Ro) bins and malfunctioning lorry compactors.
KDEBWM, in a statement, acknowledged the ongoing disruptions to the collection schedule.
Managing director Datuk Ramli Mohd Tahir also expressed his appreciation to the residents of Kajang for their patience at this challenging time.
'The primary issue stems from our ageing fleet, as most lorries have reached the end of their operational lifespan after nearly seven years of continuous service since our contract with MPKj started in July 2018.
"The current state of the fleet has led to frequent breakdowns and mechanical issues, further compounding delays,' he said.
To mitigate the impact, Rami said several short-term solutions have been implemented.
'We have engaged additional backup compactor lorries, though availability remains insufficient to fully cover the gaps. We are also deploying backup Ro-Ro lorries to supplement collection efforts. We will be actively seeking more backup resources to improve coverage in the interim,' he said.
For a permanent resolution, KDEBWM will introduce 92 new compactor lorries, significantly expanding its capacity by Sept 1 to service 92 zones, which is an increase from the current 59.
At the same time, KDEBWM voiced concerns on the poor road conditions at Jalan Langat Lestari, the main access road leading to the Tanjung Duabelas Sanitary Landfill in Kuala Langat.
Ownership of the 11km stretch of road leading to the landfill is shared between Worldwide Holdings Bhd and Selangor Public Works Department (JKR).
While the final 3km leading to the landfill has been kept in good condition, the remaining 8km stretch is filled with numerous craters and potholes, making for a rough ride for KDEBWM's lorries during its daily trips.
Nazli, during the council meeting, did not discount that bad road conditions near Tanjung Dua Belas Sanitary Landfill were a contributing factor.
'However, malfunctioning compactor trucks will cease to be an issue after Aug 1 as we have entered into a new interim agreement with KDEB where their contractors will have to acquire new compactors,' he said.

Three-day JPJ blitz nets 53 luxury cars

Opulent rides: Muhammad Kifli (right) showing some of the seized luxury vehicles. KUALA LUMPUR: A Rolls-Royce worth RM3mil is among the 53 posh vehicles seized during a three-day blitz on owners who failed to abide by road transport regulations. 'Other cars seized included a Lamborghini, a BMW i8 and an Aston Martin,' said Road Transport Department (JPJ) senior enforcement director Muhammad Kifli Ma Hassan. This came after a crackdown, codenamed 'Ops Luxury 2.0', was held around the Klang Valley to detect owners of luxury cars with offences such as expired road tax, no valid insurance, expired or non-existent driving licences and the display of unregistered number plates. 'Some of these vehicles were without road tax since 2022,' said Muhammad Kifli. He said that initial investigations revealed that three of the seized high-end vehicles were being driven by foreigners without valid road tax or insurance coverage, Muhammad Kifli said. 'One of the foreign drivers was also found to be using a fake international driving permit, allegedly purchased in Dubai for RM5,000.' He said that these cars were rented, while some were owned by companies where the individuals were employed. The Rolls-Royce is believed to be owned by a businessman. Speaking to reporters yesterday, Muhammad Kifli said 'Ops Luxury 2.0' was conducted by Kuala Lumpur JPJ based on intelligence gathering and public tip-offs. 'The operation was carried out under the Road Transport Act and related regulations,' he said. Muhammad Kifli said that JPJ did not practise selective enforcement and would continue taking firm action regardless of vehicle type or the status of their owners. 'Our enforcement doesn't focus solely on motorcycles. Luxury vehicles are not exempted. 'We are carrying out this operation nationwide,' he said. Muhammad Kifli added that there are currently more than 1,000 luxury vehicles nationwide flagged by JPJ for not having valid road tax or insurance. 'Vehicle owners are urged to renew their road tax immediately. 'We will not compromise with anyone who fails to comply with traffic regulations,' he said.

Ford Ranger driver slammed for tailgating to avoid paying toll

WHILE most Malaysians dutifully pay tolls, a few drivers are determined to dodge the fee — even if it means endangering others on the road. A Ford Ranger driver has gone viral on TikTok after being caught tailgating another vehicle to sneak through a toll booth without paying. In the 13-second clip, the four-wheel drive (4WD) can be seen driving dangerously close behind a car before accelerating to slip past the boom gate. Once through, the vehicle slows down and continues on its way. ALSO READ: Netizens ashamed for Lamborghini Aventador driver who avoided paying the toll 'Bro thought the toll was already free as announced by the government,' read the sarcastic caption on the video. Based on the dashcam clip, the incident is believed to have taken place at 10.54pm on July 25. The post has since racked up over 180 comments, with many slamming the driver for refusing to pay a small toll fee — despite owning a vehicle worth RM100,000 to RM200,000. One user remarked, 'Drives an expensive car but can't pay the toll.' Another quipped, 'Pity him — all his money went into the car. Now there's not even enough left to pay toll. What about food money?' A third chimed in, 'All his money's gone to monthly car payments.' Meanwhile, Faiz Hamid didn't hold back: 'Shameful to drive such a big car and still skip the toll. 'Might as well drive a sardine can, bro.'
