Why Rockstar may have scrapped GTA 6's original story concepts

Time of India20 hours ago

Rockstar Games
co-founder
Dan Houser
wrote multiple versions of Grand Theft Auto VI's story, but these original concepts were all cancelled, a report claims. These may be the potential reasons behind a shift in the game's narrative development. The majority of the Take-Two-owned studio's games have been written by a core group, often led by Dan Houser. However, Houser departed Rockstar in 2020, nearly a year after the release of Red Dead Redemption 2. Houser's departure has raised questions about who is currently responsible for writing GTA 6. While some key personnel left with him,
Red Dead Redemption 2
writer Michael Unsworth remained at Rockstar until 2023. The extent of Houser's direct work on GTA 6 before he left remains unclear; however, he may have contributed to the early concepts of the upcoming game.
Rockstar may have cancelled three different GTA 6 stories
According to a report by Medium, multiple storylines for GTA 6 were allegedly developed and later scrapped over the years, with each version featuring different sets of protagonists. The report claims that Dan Houser, Rockstar's former creative lead, proposed three distinct narratives between 2014 and 2019.
The first story, pitched in 2014, involved three protagonists — a corrupt cop, his troubled son, and a drug lord's ambitious right-hand man. This version was reportedly dropped by publisher Take-Two after two years for being 'too dark.'

The second concept, from around 2016, focused on a Vice City policewoman who goes rogue to avenge her mother's death, paired with a reckless drug smuggler. This, too, was cancelled by 2018.
The final story, reportedly written in 2019, revolved around a grieving female officer replaced by an ex-soldier, leading her into the criminal world.
Houser is said to have taken a sabbatical in 2019 due to creative fatigue and eventually left Rockstar in 2020.
However, the report's authenticity is unverified, and some fans are sceptical, citing Houser's heavy involvement in Red Dead Redemption 2's development during the same period.

Many even begin to draw inspiration from the character, which is such a big responsibility.' He acknowledges how powerful it is when fans tell him they feel a personal connection with his portrayal. 'It's moments like these that remind you why you chose this craft in the first place.' Behind the spotlight and the fanfare lies a strong support system—and for Abhishek, that's his family. 'My parents are very supportive of my work. They watch every episode, sometimes even more keenly than I do! Their feedback, both good and critical, matters deeply to me. They're not afraid to tell me where I can do better, and that honesty keeps me grounded.' He adds that his parents' pride in his achievements is what keeps him motivated during the most challenging times. 'When they're proud, it means more than any award.' While social media can be a platform for immense love, it also brings unsolicited negativity. 'I genuinely enjoy reading heartfelt messages from fans—it lifts my spirits. But I've also learned that not everyone will have kind words, and that's okay. There will always be trolls, but you can't let them define your journey. I don't give energy to hate. My job is to stay focused on my growth, my work, and my truth.' Looking ahead, Jamai No.1 promises an exciting twist, particularly in the relationship arc of Abhishek's character. Shifted out of Karnataka Lokayukta post, IPS officer seeks anticipatory bail

Bengaluru: Senior IPS officer Srinath Mahadev Joshi approached the special court for Lokayukta cases Wednesday, seeking anticipatory bail, days after being transferred out of his post in the anti-corruption institution. His move comes in the wake of Lokayukta police pasting a notice at his residence, summoning him for questioning in a corruption investigation. The court has directed Lokayukta police to file its objections to the bail plea by Thursday. Joshi, who served as Lokayukta SP (city wing) for more than two years, was recently shifted out of the post. Around the same time, Lokayukta sleuths arrested dismissed police constable Ningappa G alias Ningappa Savant, 46, from Chitradurga, on allegations of making extortion calls to govt officials by posing as a representative of top Lokayukta officials. According to a Lokayukta press release, Ningappa allegedly routed the extorted money into 13 cryptocurrency wallets held in his name and in those of his relatives. Lokayukta police also stated they were examining reports that some officials within the institution may have colluded with Ningappa in targeting govt officers for extortion. "We will file our objections Thursday. Instead of approaching the court, he could have simply responded to the notice and appeared before us for the investigation," a senior Lokayukta officer said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Meanwhile, the high court Wednesday stayed the June 15 notice issued by Lokayukta police summoning Joshi. Justice SR Krishna Kumar granted the stay but allowed the investigation on the other accused to continue. Joshi, in his plea before HC, contended that the notice served on him lacked essential information, such as details of the FIR or reasons for summoning him. He alleged that the Lokayukta authorities acted in concert to curb his constitutional rights, prompting him to seek judicial relief. Joshi has maintained his innocence, denying any involvement in the extortion case. In a related development, Justice Krishna Kumar also heard a petition filed by Chandrakala, wife of Ningappa, challenging the legality of her husband's arrest. The hearing has been adjourned to Thursday. The counsel for Lokayukta police submitted that the grounds for Ningappa's arrest were indeed provided, though no acknowledgement was obtained. They also claimed that the petitioner, Chandrakala, was present during the arrest. However, Chandrakala's counsel argued that CCTV footage would reveal the true sequence of events. He claimed that Chandrakala had visited the Lokayukta office on June 2 and met inspector general Subramanyeshwara Rao. "She even entered her name in the visitors' register and it should be visible on CCTV footage. At the time, Ningappa was inside the office, but she was not allowed to meet him," the counsel said. At this point, the judge noted that the court had not yet reviewed the CCTV footage submitted by the petitioner. Before adjourning the hearing, Justice Kumar remarked orally that if the allegations are proven true, it might warrant invoking the Supreme Court's ruling in the Vihan case, which could lead to an order for Ningappa's release.
