Maharashtra Declares Ganeshotsav As State Festival
The over-a-century-old 'Sarvajanik Ganeshotsav' was on Thursday officially declared as the 'State Festival of Maharashtra', with the government asserting that it was committed to preserving and promoting the cultural legacy of the festival.
Making the announcement in the legislative assembly, Cultural Affairs Minister Ashish Shelar said, "Ganeshotsav is not just a celebration. It is a symbol of Maharashtra's cultural pride and identity." The minister said in a statement that Sarvajanik Ganeshotsav (public celebration of Ganesh festival) in Maharashtra was started by Lokmanya (Bal Gangadhar) Tilak in 1893. "The very essence of this festival is rooted in social unity, nationalism, the spirit of freedom, self-respect, and pride in our language," he said.
The Maharashtra government is firmly committed to preserving, promoting and celebrating the cultural legacy of Ganeshotsav across the state and the nation, Shelar said.
"While some individuals attempted to hinder this age-old public tradition by raising various court petitions, trying to obstruct the celebrations, the Mahayuti government acted swiftly and decisively removed all such hurdles," he said.
The previous government had imposed curbs on POP (Plaster of Paris) idols, citing guidelines of the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) but without offering practical alternatives. Shelar said his department approached the issue with a more balanced view.
"We initiated a comprehensive study to explore eco-friendly alternatives and assess whether POP is truly harmful to the environment. We commissioned an in-depth study by the Kakodkar Committee through the Rajiv Gandhi Science Commission.
"Union Minister Bhupender Yadav approved the findings, and the earlier restrictions were lifted. As per the court's ruling, the making, displaying and selling of POP idols are now permitted," he said.
The BJP-led Mahayuti government has taken a clear and proactive stance on Ganeshotsav. Be it police security, infrastructure needs, or financial support for grand celebrations in cities like Pune, Mumbai, and across the state, the Maharashtra government will bear the required expenses, the minister declared.
"Celebrating Ganeshotsav with full enthusiasm is not just a tradition but a core belief of the Mahayuti government. I appeal to all Ganpati Mandals to incorporate themes in their festivities that honour our armed forces, showcase social initiatives, 'Operation Sindoor', highlight the nation's developmental achievements and pay tributes to our great leaders in their decorative displays," Shelar said.
This year, the 10-day Ganpati festival will begin on August 27.

Fadnavis, Shinde name a GM each for BEST in latest tussle
MUMBAI: A post usually shunned by IAs officers – the general manager of the distressed BEST undertaking – ended up with two officers at the helm, leaving the Mahayuti government with egg on its face and the target of jibes from the opposition. On August 5, the UDD issued an order asking additional municipal commissioner Dr Ashwini Joshi to hold additional charge of the undertaking, which runs Mumbai's public bus service and supplies power to the island city. Joshi was to head the BEST until the state general administration department (GAD) issued a regular order on a new appointee. However, that same day, the GAD appointed GST commissioner Asheesh Sharma to take over the beleaguered BEST undertaking. As a result, the BEST had two officers at the helm, at the same time, even if only for a day. After the faux pas was discovered, the UDD issued a statement late on Wednesday, denying it had issued the order assigning charge to Joshi. The gaffe has put the BJP-led Mahayuti government in an awkward spot. The opposition claims it has once again exposed the tug-of-war between deputy chief minister Eknath Shinde and chief minister Devendra Fadnavis, the former heading the UDD and the latter the GAD. According to protocol, the GAD issues orders on government appointments and transfers, not the UDD or any other department. State Congress chief Harshwardhan Sapkal posted on social media, saying: '1 post, 2 orders, 2 leaders, is this a double gang war of the double engine government?' A 'gang war' is ongoing between Fadnavis and Shinde over the transfer of officials, he claimed, adding that in view of this struggle to appoint people in 'lucrative positions', the public is left wondering whether it is a government or a turf war. NCP (SP) leader Rohit Pawar also took potshots at the BJP-led government. 'As soon as the post of General Manager in BEST became vacant, it seems a race has begun between Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde to place 'their' person in this position,' he wrote on social media. The BEST has been in financial distress for several years. Political pressure and aggressive staff unions have made managing the undertaking especially difficult. Following an accident where a BEST bus ploughed through pedestrians on a crowded street in Kurla, killing eight and leaving 40 injured, the state transferred its general manager, Anil Diggikar in December last year. Harshdeep Kamble was to succeed Diggikar but he never took charge, and the state asked Ashwini Joshi to fill the post. In February 2025, SVR Srinivas was given additional charge of the BEST, before he retired on July 31. When BEST employees threatened a protest at Azad Maidan on Wednesday, the BEST administration needed an officer at the top, and hence the UDD issued an order assigning additional charge to Ashwini Joshi on Tuesday. The GAD too issued an order appointing Asheesh Sharma, that very same day. Commenting on the mix-up, Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Adityaa Thackeray posted on social media, saying: 'So the BEST is being killed by the state government on purpose, but what is worse is the coordination between CM and Gaddaarnath Mindhe (he meant Eknath Shinde) is already dead. CM's GAD has issued orders to one name as administrator, while the Gaddaarnath's UD department has issued orders to another name. Shouldn't the DCM have first discussed this with CM? Shouldn't the GAD be issuing these orders? Why should our State suffer in this ego war? Imagine, if this basic coordination is SO dead, these are the people who are supposed to be leading our State! The most corrupt and incompetent government that Maharashtra has seen.'

Shinde meets Modi, Shah, refutes suggestions of Mahayuti trouble
MUMBAI: Shiv Sena chief Eknath Shinde, who visited Delhi on Wednesday to meet prime minister Narendra Modi and home minister Amit Shah, rejected rumours that he was there to sort out his issues with his Mahayuti allies. The deputy CM took a snipe at the Thackeray cousins Raj and Uddhav when asked about a possible alliance between the two. 'So what will happen if the two come together?' he asked. 'People don't vote for names but for accomplishments. They don't vote for people who sit at home. Parties have a right to get into alliances but the people decide whom to vote for.' There were some questions on Thackeray attending the opposition alliance INDIA meet on August 7 but Shinde refused to answer them. The Shiv Sena chief announced that his party had extended its unconditional support to the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) for the upcoming vice-presidential election. He affirmed that his party remained one of the oldest and most trusted allies of the NDA.

Turning to ‘spiritual powers' to fight ‘vote jihad' led to Mahayuti's victory: CM Fadnavis
Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar: Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis on Wednesday said he and Shiv Sena chief Eknath Shinde turned to the 'spiritual powers' in the state to counter the 'vote jihad' experiment observed during last year's Lok Sabha election in May which led to their unprecedented victory in the assembly poll later in Nov. "An experiment was conducted in the name of 'vote jihad' during the Lok Sabha poll. Some people united to defeat nationalist thoughts. When we unearthed their conspiracy, I and Shinde Saheb, appealed to the spiritual powers in Maharashtra," he said. Fadnavis was speaking at an event organised by spiritual leader Ramgiri Maharaj at Shani Devgaon village in Vaijapur taluka of Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar. The BJP-Shiv Sena-NCP's Mahayuti alliance suffered a setback in Maharashtra during the Lok Sabha election but made a remarkable comeback six months later in the assembly poll. "We told Ramgiri Maharaj and other seers in Maharashtra that this (vote jihad) is not a political invasion but a clear attack on our culture. There is a feeling that a handful of people are uniting to defeat the thoughts of nationalism and our sants," Fadnavis said. Fadnavis also announced govt's support for a Rs 109-crore development plan of 'Sarala Bet', a shrine under the aegis of Ramgiri Maharaj, and the approval to construct a barrage on a river at Shani Devgaon village. Work on the diversion project to bring excess water from west-flowing rivers to Marathwada would begin this year, he added.
