Sarawak targets 50,000 dogs vaccinated annually to achieve rabies-free goal by 2030
SIBU (July 13): The Sarawak government aims to vaccinate 50,000 dogs each year under the 'One Health' approach, which integrates human, animal, and environmental health, said Tamin assemblyman Christopher Gira Sambang.
He said this policy not only involves the implementation of widespread dog vaccination but also includes animal population control, licensing, public education, and the enforcement of the Public Health Ordinance.
'It is proof that the state government and related agencies are committed to making Sarawak rabies-free by 2030,' he said.
Gira made these remarks during a Rabies Vaccination Programme, held at SJKC Tong Ah, Selangau yesterday.
The event was jointly organised by the Sibu Division Chinese Community Leaders Association and the Department of Veterinary Services (DVS) Sibu.
Also present was Sibu Division Chinese Community Leaders Association chairman Temenggong Dato Vincent Lau.
Gira further stressed that the rabies issue should not be taken lightly as it could lead to loss of lives if left untreated.
'I strongly support this initiative which not only provides free vaccination but also raises awareness among the people about the importance of pet care and preventive actions,' he added.
Since 2017, Sarawak has recorded 82 human rabies cases, including 75 fatalities – figures which the assemblyman described as 'heart-breaking statistics'.
He revealed that more than 52,000 dog bite cases and 43,000 cat bite cases have been reported.
'These are not just numbers, these are lives, families, and futures impacted,' he emphasised.
'Thanks to proactive public health initiatives, a total of 13,757 dogs had been vaccinated as of October 2024.'
Gira said the programme held in Selangau is part of the state's ongoing efforts to curb the spread of rabies, which remains a concern, especially in rural areas and smaller towns such as Selangau.
He also highlighted the state government's Rabies Eradication Operation and the establishment of the Mobile Veterinary Team (VMT) as key strategies under the Sarawak Rabies Elimination Action Plan. christopher gira dogs lead rabies Sibu vaccination

DVS Seized 114 tonnes Of Pig Carcass worth Over RM3 Mln since 2024
GENERAL KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 18 (Bernama) -- The Department of Veterinary Services (DVS) seized 114 tonnes of pig carcass, estimated to be worth RM3.05 million, involving the transfer of carcasses without approval in 18 cases of seizure from 2024 until last July,. Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Food Security Datuk Seri Arthur Joseph Kurup said the seizures involved sales or storage premises of frozen pork carcasses suspected to have been imported without approval in Kelantan, Selangor, Johor, Kedah, Penang, Melaka and Labuan. He said that during the same period, the Malaysian Quarantine and Inspection Services Department (MAQIS) detected several attempts of illegal pork smuggling involving 24 arrests with a total trading quantity of 640 tonnes. 'The Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security (KPKM), through MAQIS and DVS, always takes strict measures to control imports and combat illegal smuggling of pork from abroad, especially from countries identified as having outbreaks of dangerous diseases,' he said during the oral question-and-answer session in the Dewan Rakyat today. Arthur was responding to a question from Sim Tze Tzin (PH-Bayan Baru) regarding MAQIS' enforcement actions on the importation and illegal smuggling of pork from abroad, particularly from Thailand and other countries with outbreaks of Streptococcus Suis and African Swine Fever (ASF), as well as the number of arrests made in relation to illegal pork smuggling activities at all national entry points this year. ASF spreads to five Penang farms, outbreak contained
TASEK GELUGOR: The African Swine Fever (ASF) outbreak in Kampung Selamat here remains under control, despite five pig farms in the area testing positive for the disease as of last Friday. Penang Department of Veterinary Services (DVS) director Dr Saira Banu Mohamed Rejab said the latest case was detected at a farm after laboratory confirmation by the department. "This brings the total number of positive cases in Kampung Selamat to five. "However, the situation is manageable and less severe than the 2023 outbreak in Seberang Prai Selatan (SPS)," she told the New Straits Times today. As of Aug 1, 2,060 pigs from four farms have been culled — 351 pigs died from to the infection, while 1,709 were culled to curb the spread. Dr Saira Banu said the affected areas were under close monitoring, regular blood sampling being carried out to determine the extent of the infection. "We cannot yet declare Kampung Selamat an ASF-free zone," she added. The department continues to work closely with farmers and local authorities to enforce strict biosecurity measures. ASF is a highly contagious viral disease affecting domestic and wild pigs, but poses no risk to humans. The outbreak was first reported on July 7 by a member of the public, who observed pigs exhibiting clinical signs consistent with the disease. The department promptly conducted inspections and collected samples at farms. Kampung Selamat is home to 63 pig farms with an estimated 120,000 pigs. In 2023, Penang declared the ASF outbreak a "disaster" after cases were reported in seven commercial pig farms in two districts, involving 25,000 pigs.
